I agree with ChocolateExplosion. Science, art & philosophy existed before capitalism and they'll exist after it's gone. What won't exist are war, famine and environmental destruction, rooted in the search for profit at any cost.

Peep Show is hilarious, but it's too bad it shows anti-capitalists as stupid, drugged-out hippies. Real anti-capitalism is a democratic, political movement for common ownership i.e. socialism. Mark should join Respect!

Yeah, because capitalism created war, and famine right? Mate, you need to come to terms with the world. Nothing will ever be perfect. It's the worst system, except for all the others. Relatively speaking, people in the modern western world are freer, more prosperous, more creative, and generally better off than any other people in history. Nothing worse than this modernist idea that we are all suffering so immensely because of the "slavery" of our modern world. Better than literal slavery!

I don't think a world where literally billions of people are starving is perfect. Some people in the global north benefit from capitalism - most don't. This isn't a conspiracy, and you don't have to put slavery in quotes - just go to the UNDP and check out some of the stats on human development. The freedom & prosperity of _some_ in the west comes at the price of the world's poor.

I didn't say perfect. Infact I said the world will never be perfect. I am fully aware of how people must suffer in other parts of the world to provide for the life we enjoy here. What I am saying is that is the way life is. Never will change. There will always be poor and rich and a big gap between. Socialism tries to fix that, and it ends up with more power in the hands of the rich, never in the hands of the people lke it is meant to because whoever takes control inevitably abuses their power.

Thanks gnomit, I understand your position better now. I'd suggest there's a rich legacy of socialist struggles that have combined economic equality and freedom. I disagree that the failure was inevitable (and therefore that the gap will always be there); I think in most cases - Russia, Spain, etc. - the true revolutionaries were killed. But the failure of those movements doesn't vindicate capitalism: it means we have to figure out how to fight for equality & freedom at the same time.
