My opinion is Stephanie is the best. Her play is perfect. Adam is very good player too but stephanie is so regular and has such an amount of lightness. There is no error in her play. Her left hand is stronger, her right hand as much dexterity than a classical musician. Just look on youtube this same piece played by stephanie tricks. you will see the difference. My opinion by the way:p
That Adam and Stephanie both play superlatively is the final proof that there must be something in the air or the water in the USA.Does this make it the "ragtime" God's own country?Wonderful music both.
I'm more for Adam. Stephanie, judging by youtube alone (i know, i know. I don't live in the US so there.) overuses the Finger Breaker, while every Swanson video i watch is of a different piece.
There may be several clips of Stephanie playing "Fingerbreaker" on You Tube, but her programs are more varied than you make it sound. Stephanie has a much stronger left hand than Adam -- or most anyone else I've seen (live or on You Tube). She'll probably be in Sacramento for the West Coast Festival again next month. That will be a good time to see for yourself. Video will likely surface on You Tube for those who won't be there in person.
This a young Adam here. If you compare him at his current age of 18 then I'd have to give it to Adam over Stephanie just based on my personal preference for style of playing. It's very close, but I like the varying dynamics and pedal use displayed by Adam. It's very surprising to see that mature of a sound coming from such a young player!
Why does everyone want to play ragtime fast? it is, at it finest, a medium tempo music. Listen to Jelly Roll Morton playing Scott Joplins Original Rags for the perfect example.
I agree. Even worse than playing too fast is playing it increasingly faster than the tempo you started with, or playing it faster than you can cleanly play it. At least Adam keeps the same temo and doesn't play faster than his ability though. He's one of the best on youtube I've seen, especially his more current recordings.
Watching and listening to you play the piano actually makes me cry. You are such a gifted and talented man. Keep up the good work, Adam, and keep loving your music. BRAVO!!
Im impressed, Robin Frost is well known for making near impossible-to-play music. I myself attempted to learn this piece and the fingering is wickedly difficult. Congrats on pulling it off!!
Check this video out to listen to Robin Frost:
