What scope mounts are you using? I have a GEW 98, 1916 spandau with trench magazine and would like to find high scope mounts like yours and put a decent scope on it...what mounts are you using on you scope and where did you get them.,,,
Just took my German Kar 98K to the range for the first time last week and it quickly became my favorite rifle. Perfectly ballanced it was able to hit the gongs out at 600 yards and shot some really tight groups better than my Rem 700 at 100 yards. I was expecting it to be a 5 or 6 inch group gun at 100 yards like my Yugo M48 but it is a lot more accurate! I love the sights also, they are very precise! I found my favorite rifle now, hopefully it will last for another hundred years!
I know this question would be more fitting for a forum somewhere but I'm hoping somebody that watches this video may know the answer. I hunt with an elderly man who uses a german mauser that has 1898 marked on the receiver. Does this mean it is an original 1898 mauser or did they mark these rifles this way even after 1898?
its a loud rifle i can tell you that much. I was shooting a ol m14 at a range not noticing what a fella was shooting next to me. lining up a shot and BOOM. I knew right then in there what he was shootin
@xXkillerXx619 I know you are not a dog (there are no homosexual canines) it is a figure of speech. But what gives? First you are a raging homosexual, and when I reject your advances you then pretend you are not a homosexual. Even though I am not interested in you that way STAY TRUE TO YOUR SELF.

Germans are not racists. The German state persecutes German people in the same way as foreigners.Torture and murder are seen as normal tools of the state because Germans get accustomed to this since beeing young children. So no German would ever complain. In no other country torture and murder by the state is accepted.Consequently foreigners being persecuted in Germany are complaining. This gives the completely false picture of Germans being racist. They are not. They are only NAZIs.See my homepage.
I know a lot of people like to make jokes about American gun owners being red neck and stuff, but if we were ever invaded or anything, we not only have a military, but we have thousands of ordinary civilians who can make 1,000 yard shots with a WW2 rifle.
@PivotB3stZ The Japanese never made plans to invade the west coast just because of what you said. One of their generals said "every citizen is a gun-owner and marksman, we would not be foolish enough to step in such quicksand."
@Ten7d5 That's true, I also believe there was a quote from a Japanese Admiral saying "We can not invade America, there would be a gun behind every blade of grass."
@hehe1mdead Well, go look at the stuff in Egypt, Syria, etc. Libya was lucky that so many military personel wanted to join the rebels, otherwise they would have been screwed. What you see there is a civil war going on with rocks and home made bombs. That wouldn't be the case here, you have people with .50 cals, hunting rifles, hunting IR gear. I saw an add a week ago of an 88mm mortar for $3,000 along with live ammo rounds for around $300 a piece... C'mon. Freakin mortars!!
How is the bore on your rifle? Is it pristine that it gets such good accuracy? I have a 1936 RC but although the rifling is good there is some corrosion build up at the base of the rifling hence why I am hesitant to dump money into scoping it.
With my Romanian Captured DOU 44 (all German matching but the bolt), my first shot with it was dead center at a 100 yards inside a 1 inch circle with iron sights. Honestly, I'm amazed at the accuracy of these rifles. That's a RC huh? I thought you were shooting a GI bring back. That's amazing accuracy! I've often figured the stock and the bands were the most important thing to match the receiver and barrel for the best accuracy... but you've obviously proved me wrong. lol
@governator45 It's the opposite of most WW2 rifles, really. My grandfather took a 98K off an SS man (with matching, silver plated, engraved bayonet) and it shoots like shit. It might be worth a lot more money (and I will never sell it, because family means more than money), but it's honestly a garbage rifle. My Russian capture, on the other hand, is a sweet shooter that I've used to hunt for years and can easily outshoot me.
@PuppetMaster303 Computer software, I use a free program called "Point Blank." If you google it there will be several sites to download it from for free.
Ahh ok, now I feel silly since it said at the end 1941. I've heard of a few of the WWII rifles being reused G98's and I was curious since yours seems to be a wide arc.
I've got myself a nice wide arc Spandau action from 1916 with a WWI era side-tap for a mount. I'm having it glass-bedded (either AcraGlass or Devon), pillared, probably gonna use a Microfit blank for the stock in walnut and a 22" A-bolt barrel from a blued .30-06.
Hot damn! Didn't check your profile. It will keep me busy for a while.
Man I envy you. You get the best of the best. Screw new high powered rifles, .50 cals and other. Oldstyle rules!! Amazing. Even with a 70 year old rifle you might take down a game (those days a human) at a distance you cannot see it without optics. I bet you might go a bit further with lethality...if you hit em in the sweetspot, but I don't care, this will do ;) Did you ever go to hunt with this baby (or other ww2)?
@crackawise Good observation! The trigger is not very stiff on this rifle, plus on some days the sensation in my index finger isnt very bad. I have nerve damage in my hand from a neck injury that sometimes prevents me from using my index finger for shooting. The rifles with heavier triggers, like the 91.30's, Ill always use my middle finger. It all comes down to how my hand is feeling on any particular day.
@mag30th umm yeah the 91/30 is not the 91 .30 you are thinking of the .30 caliber but it is 1891 and 1930 as in time frame. :) just trying to clarify.
@petritnikqi because tracers foul up the barrel with corrosives and other soot and junk as well as being less accurate by a long shot.match is the best to use but i would not normally buy match grade because it is so expensive except for this super-long range stuff like mag30th is soing at around 1.5 miles.
...didn't know you could get a Mauser 98K to shoot that well. I've seen guys shoot Mausers and they never could hit the broad side of a barn with them...then again I'm an incurable Springfield '03 jocky...
You should get a few boxes of the S & B ammunition, pull out the bullets and handload them yourself to ensure the best consistency. I believe you may achieve better results with this bullet at the extreme ranges, the stability is super and the BC consistently above .557. This will help prevent the shutter at 1,000 yards. At 2,600 fps the 196 gr S & B FMJBT bullet is supersonic out to 1,050 meters (G1), adjust that for yards and you've got some nice extra range. Love your vids, keep'em coming!
Btw, If it may be of interest Sellier & Bellot are selling 196 gr FMJ boat tail ammunition that does 2,600 fps through a 600mm barrel. The BC is listed as .557, so it will still be supersonic at 1,000 yards. This is also close to the original 198 gr German sniper bullet, the sS Patronen, which has a BC of .584.
I'm guessing you used a Sierra Matchking bullet? BC is around .505 to .525 if I remember correctly?
Excellent video, been waiting for this for a while. That thing is super accurate, even with the wind seeming to blow quite a lot, and that thing is over 60 years old! Don't think any WW2 firearm will perform better.
@bellator11 Sorry, in the last reply I posted I was using 190's, Im getting tired, I was using 200's. Ive been reloading 190's for my 300 WM and had a Freudian slip... I meant to post was, Thank you!! And yes Sir, the Sierra MK 200 with a BC of 0.520.
@mag30th does any rifle in your collection perform as good as the Kar98k? The only rifle I've found being able to match it in terms of long range accuracy would be the Swiss K31 and Swedish M96.
@mag30th What is the recoil on the .300 win mag i want to get a rifle in that cal. my dream rifle, the m24 in .300 win mag and the much cheaper and affordable Remington 770.
awsome simply awsome. see who needs a 5000 dollar .50 cal 2000 dollar optic when all you need is an old surplus rifle and a 200 dollar scope. to reach out 1000 yards. i would like to do something like this but i live in northwest indiana but i cant find a range.
@dp665 this mouser is altered for good , by a verry good gunsmith ..... i'v pay atention to the sounds of the triger and the bolt .... i wish to have a 98k
@kiwishuffler; when the bullet loses the steam and goes below the speed of sound(sub-sonic) , then it is effected by the wind more than when it is traveling above the speed of sound(super-sonic). hence it will alter the bullet's flight path!
@kiwishuffler 1 of 2 The projectile shutters slightly when transferring from super to subsonic, and it changes the trajectory slightly. Some people claim that the round will tumble after the shutter, that may be true with some projectiles but I havent seen that with match grade projectiles. My experience is that the bullet will shutter at the transition (altering its path somewhat), but it remains stable enough on a lethal trajectory well past the 2,000 yard mark.
@mag30th 2 of 2 Ive recovered projectiles from the 1,700 and 1,800 yard marks and they all appeared to have struck point first, they did not appear to have been tumbling. As far a striking a specific target, I would say that a 1,000 yards is the max range for the 8mm Mauser, but like I said I believe the projectile will remain lethal well past the 1,000 yard mark, possible 2,000 yards or more.
GREAT video. Love it. Need a second K98 so I can put some reproduction glass on it.

another very cool shooting vid , do you think the 8mm mauser is a more suitable round for shooting at 1000 yards than 308 or 30-06 ?
