    Volcanoes do not generally produce fire. Eruptions are are created when molten rock (which can look a bit like fire) escapes at the surface. The CO2 dissolved in the molten rock causes the eruption to be explosive when the pressure is released as the lava gets to the surface and the gas is released.

  • I remain unconvinced that this is a good experiment to demonstrate what happens when a volcano erupts. CO2 puts out a fire. Do flames come out of an erupting volcano!? Isn't there a temperature drop when baking soda & vinegar are mixed? Great to demonstrate the formation of a gas and how CO2 puts out a flame.

    The tonic water and mentos... cool to show the formation of CO2. Better for showing a geyser than an erupting volcano.
