Science fiction and speculative fiction might actually lose their relevance if they become too enshrined in the academic aspect of literature. I think it's easier for an outsider genre to give a candid critique of norms and customs.
I went to this exhibition a few days ago. Great fun, with something for everyone who's remotely interested in the subject, including a TARDIS and a huge representation of the tripod Martian from "War of the Worlds" (although if you go to Woking you'll find an even better version in the town centre!)
I've been a science fiction fan since the 1960s. I was a little disappointed they didn't mention some of the great writers of what is called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Arthur C. Clarke & Robert Heinlein were particularly brilliant.
science fiction is underrated, science fiction is what us as man expect from the world and ourselves shaping the form in what we will live in the future most of the time sf shapes our present too.
@meetdoctordoom Right on. Also, Sci-fi is able to critique modern culture in ways that other genres can't by taking common concepts to extremes or following logic threads etc.
this is a nice history

Aww, too bad it's only a temporary exhibition. I wouldn't mind a museum dedicated to it.
