If your friend is likes resolution manually to something like 320x240. Make a shortcut on his desktop and start menu to replace the originals. Just make the shortcut launch the game with -w320. You might have to at least do 640x480, but that's simple. it's just -w640.

You can also do this from steam under the 'launch options.'
