This won for several reasons:

1. It was original & eccentric.

2. The kids are great singers; they had to sing dissonant chords several times and nailed each one. Many chords in this song have notes right next to each other, which sounds strange, this is called dissonance. Dissonance makes a person want to sing a different note, but that would be wrong. Because of this, it is hard to do properly. A good dissonant chord intrigues the audience.
