I think this is great as an media and art student but great for any college student or consumer interested in something new and stylish...I wonder how the Apple tablet is going to be?
When this get's released and if it is under $700 all notebooks would be crushed and this (new era) will dominate all mobile computing needs. There still might be laptops, if they can figure out how to make a dvd burner less than 1/2 a inch thick they could stick it into one of these and it most likely could be the best thing that ?is? ever be invented!!!!!!!

They'll use the base of Windows 7, with a custom UI and without all the shit they include to make sure it can run on any computer, because they will all use the same hardware, kinda like the Xbox. So you should end up with something a lot smaller than your average Windows, custom made for this. I'm not a Microsoft fan, but if they pull this off I will be impressed.
You know what I love, everyone will get hyped up over this and it will fail again just like everything new Microsoft has been putting out. I just feel they get everyone hyped up and rush the process of making the product and just doesn't do anything nearly as good as they say. I am actually done with windows and saving up for a MacBook.
That's a gaming system but it did have all those nasty over heating problems when it came out. People buy gaming systems more often then computers. I am just saying Microsoft has failed pretty hard with a lot of things. And with Windows 7 that just got me pissed because I had just gotten a new computer like a month before they announced their "new" project. Their just money hungry and they don't really care about their consumers.
The thing with apple though is that they never released the specs on the air so people just made assumptions and expected it to have everything they are used to. But smart people like me looked at the preview pics and noticed that there were no USB ports or any of that. I thought there were be a CD slot but eh. But over all the thing is Mac will be a lot smoother and easier versus microsoft with never ending problems.

its a tablet... if its running vista it wont be a problem because you won't need to install drivers on it... its not a PC. secondly, it will either be running a completely different OS from Microsoft,(i.e, like what they've done for MS Surface), or it'l be running a lowered down version of Windows 7

I think that microsoft can do it. I hope the courier is powerful enough to incorporate microsoft's current tablet function power in windows 7 and support of TIP and Onenote like technology. It they come with a custom OS, I hope it works in sync with windows OS and document formats.

Apple developed the things on computers we take for granted like the mouse. Also apple came up with the idea of having multiple windows Microsoft just copied it and also alot of the new stuff in windows vista like gadgets and search were copied off of mac os 10 so mac is the first computer in a sense but all modern computers are based or in Microsoft's case ripped off of macs. I just had no problems with Apple products and to hear Microsoft is coming out with a device that i would be interested still I have to be cautious. will it be laggy, will the build quality be good, will the os have bugs/viruses. you know the things that make windows unfavorable. I may convert to windows for this. This product has blown me away, and (depending on price, has to be under £1000) I will definitely buy this. Apple, if you don't announce a new tablet computer, you've lost a customer.

It'd really be a great thing for school - it all depends on the price and the writing recognition, because I'm a bit sceptic about writing on such a thick thing, when it lies on the table it might be really hard to write on. besides, how does it connect to the internet? over wifi of course, but that's not enough, at least in Europe. It's going to be way more than $300. The iTouch 32GB is that price and the Courier has more technology, 2 7 inch screens and a custom OS. I guess it's all down to Microsoft and their pricing which if we look at the Xbox 360, isn't going to be competitively priced but hopefully i'm wrong. Maybe at first it'll be expensive then come down in price like all tech like the PS3.
That's probably true - but really annoying. I mean, there's no AppStore as far as I can see, so it's technically just a big ass heavy note book, just paperless and with more comfort. I'm sure that it's very good for what they've designed it for, but like $500 for a heavy, easy-to-break note book, maybe without permanent internet connection, that's too much, no matter how much easier it gets.

Apple is Ok, but Microsoft has been around for so long, and people are used to it. I have a Mac, but I use my PC like ten times more often than the Mac, all because things use PC and Windows OS naturally. Its just been arund all the time.
Macs arent immune to viruses. They use intese layer after layer of srict encryption to beat viruses. One special super code unlocks it all for whoever is useing the computer, but it overrules anything you do.

Now a friend of mine did not spend a thousand bucks on his netbook, he only needs it for text editing and web surfing. He - and me - we both paid for the functions, not the hardware.
Yes, that's connected to the hardware, but I don't care whether my graphics come from Nvidia or AMD. So, yes, COOL - the Courier has all this technology, but you can do less with it than with a netbook. Ok, it's great, I also "kinda want one", but definetely not over 500 bucks.
Using your fingers on small touch screens is actually a big mess since theyre as inacurrate as hell; those who say otherwise have long nails ( i keep my nails short) or dont realize that those devices use big inneffective interface buttons to compensate that.
i am 99.85% sure that was designed to be a compact solution for tablet users (its the tablet equivalent to mini-notebooks/laptops)
MS at least shows me something that is better than a 10 to 15 inch iTouch... (even if its BS)
well if the screens are 7 in that's isn't that small. it's twice the real estate on a cell phone, so it should be fairly comfortable (an avg laptop keyboard for a 15.4" laptop is roughly 8.5 in) So unless someone has sausage fingers, it shouldn't be the space that causes inaccuracies but the touch technology and software itself that is a concern. Also I don't think it can be called a sub notebook with space totalling 14"
i'm calling it a sub notebook (correct term is mini-notbook/laptop) equivalent because if u google "Microsoft courier" in images ure gonna notice that it bends and closes like a book, and its design lets u hold it like one.
And i say that about fingers cause i cant bear the fact he just said a stylus is less accurate than ur finger (he said it in 1:34 - 1:45)

It's a nice concept. That's about it, the video demo is conceptual not reality. Most graphics artist might use multi-touch for designing, but not on this tiny little thing. 7inch screens are too cramped for anything more than some lousy sketch and you can do that on iPhone and iPod Touch already.
I don't even suggest my own ideas for a tablet, why give MS what they are digging for? the only reason they fart out this fake is to get feedback.

It sure looks promising but have you ever wandered why Apple or MS never released such a thing? Well because of there's a number of other players in that field - notably Fujitsu and it's Stylistic tablet series, which IMHO will be very hard to beat - it is expensive but it packs so many features and an 10h battery life! Check it out by yourself. Bing it, Google it, whatever ;).
saw the tablet video, looks very promising. i'd be surprised if they're able to pull it off. but i hope they remember to put an option to switch the screen sides for left-handed people like me, it would be hard to write only on the right screen without touching anything on the left one.
After viewing the video on Gizmodo's website, I have to say that looks really awesome! It might be nice for school to take notes. But then again, I am so used to typing notes in via a laptop keyboard that I don't like writing out notes. It seems like a really cool idea. It will be insanely expensive though.
The video looks impressive. HOWEVER it looks as if it has been edited. This is because the hand is a graphic and not a real one. Apple captured everything on video without editing it graphically. Many companies use that "graphic" way to advertise which is quite misleading. The new OS concerns me as well... Nothing like a macbook pro and an iPhone in hand.
I dont think personally i could use something like that for school or college, however i can see what microsoft was thinking. Entertainment wise gaming, videos etc it would be really poor but for business great. i have also noticed one major flaw MICROSOFT made it booooo! go MAC yay!!!
I think the courier's success will really depend on how well Microsoft implements this special UI into the tablet. If they fuck it up it will fail. But from the video if microsoft can get close to that I might just buy it.

I don't want to compare it to Apple. Although, that would mean that I shouldn't tell you how much I pay for a regular laptop ;)
But: Even IF this thing had the same hardware specs (speed, graphics) as a MacbookPro (or in your case, let's compare it to a good ol' Dell), I wouldn't buy it for that much money. Regular users don't pay for the GeForce that's fitted in their PC, they pay for the functionality. And yes, you can charge more for a Zune HD (to stay away from the Touch) because it has apps

Apple is Ok, but Microsoft has been around for so long, and people are used to it. I have a Mac, but I use my PC like ten times more often than the Mac, all because things use PC and Windows OS naturally. Its just been arund all the time.
Macs arent immune to viruses. They use intese layer after layer of srict encryption to beat viruses. One special super code unlocks it all for whoever is useing the computer, but it overrules anything you do.
Windows>Mac. Simple math.

Actually, I have to admit that I was trying to compare it to an iPod. Not intentionally though.
So I'm a webdesigner, I use my computer very often, right? Well, let's pretend that I've just bought a 1000$ PC Laptop, becuase my old one's several years old and I need a new one. Now a friend of mine did not spend a thousand bucks on his netbook, he only needs it for text editing and web surfing. He - and me - we both paid for the functions, not the hardware.

Yes, that's connected to the hardware, but I don't care whether my graphics come from Nvidia or AMD. So, yes, COOL - the Courier has all this technology, but you can do less with it than with a netbook. Ok, it's great, I also "kinda want one", but definetely not over 500 bucks.

Using your fingers on small touch screens is actually a big mess since theyre as inacurrate as hell; those who say otherwise have long nails ( i keep my nails short) or dont realize that those devices use big inneffective interface buttons to compensate that.
i am 99.85% sure that was designed to be a compact solution for tablet users (its the tablet equivalent to mini-notebooks/laptops)
MS at least shows me something that is better than a 10 to 15 inch iTouch... (even if its BS)

well if the screens are 7 in that's isn't that small. it's twice the real estate on a cell phone, so it should be fairly comfortable (an avg laptop keyboard for a 15.4" laptop is roughly 8.5 in) So unless someone has sausage fingers, it shouldn't be the space that causes inaccuracies but the touch technology and software itself that is a concern. Also I don't think it can be called a sub notebook with space totalling 14"

i'm calling it a sub notebook (correct term is mini-notbook/laptop) equivalent because if u google "Microsoft courier" in images ure gonna notice that it bends and closes like a book, and its design lets u hold it like one.
And i say that about fingers cause i cant bear the fact he just said a stylus is less accurate than ur finger (he said it in 1:34 - 1:45)
If u can draw and write with it then its more accurate, PERIOD.

It's a nice concept. That's about it, the video demo is conceptual not reality. Most graphics artist might use multi-touch for designing, but not on this tiny little thing. 7inch screens are too cramped for anything more than some lousy sketch and you can do that on iPhone and iPod Touch already.
I don't even suggest my own ideas for a tablet, why give MS what they are digging for? the only reason they fart out this fake is to get feedback.

I would be most worried about the stength of the machine. Take the macbook air, more expensive then a normal macbook, but only half as strong.
I wouldn't pay let's say $700 for a tablet computer with a 1.3ghz prossessor and 1gb ram.

apple already 'said' that they're not going to build a tablet on the last keynote: 'a great pocketcomputer' while they were talking about the ipod touch.. so i don't think that they're going to build such a device instead they're going spend more development on the ipod touch...

It sure looks promising but have you ever wandered why Apple or MS never released such a thing? Well because of there's a number of other players in that field - notably Fujitsu and it's Stylistic tablet series, which IMHO will be very hard to beat - it is expensive but it packs so many features and an 10h battery life! Check it out by yourself. Bing it, Google it, whatever ;).

saw the tablet video, looks very promising. i'd be surprised if they're able to pull it off. but i hope they remember to put an option to switch the screen sides for left-handed people like me, it would be hard to write only on the right screen without touching anything on the left one.

After viewing the video on Gizmodo's website, I have to say that looks really awesome! It might be nice for school to take notes. But then again, I am so used to typing notes in via a laptop keyboard that I don't like writing out notes. It seems like a really cool idea. It will be insanely expensive though.

The video looks impressive. HOWEVER it looks as if it has been edited. This is because the hand is a graphic and not a real one. Apple captured everything on video without editing it graphically. Many companies use that "graphic" way to advertise which is quite misleading. The new OS concerns me as well... Nothing like a macbook pro and an iPhone in hand.

I think the courier's success will really depend on how well Microsoft implements this special UI into the tablet. If they fuck it up it will fail. But from the video if microsoft can get close to that I might just buy it.
