Hello I am in deep need on knowing witch modeling program is the best? Maya, 3DStudio, ZBrush, Mudbox, Cinima4D, Blender, etc. Please reply to this as soon as possible. I am of a young age and am having difficulties choosing a lifelong program to master?
@derkakid1 A lot of the time software comes down to a personal preference, but our students typically use Maya and/or XSI, along with ZBrush and Renderman for their 3D animations or models. If you are looking for a lifelong program to master, then you should definitely take into consideration that Maya is among the industry standards for animators and modelers. Hope that helps. Thanks!
@VancouverFilmSchool Thank you very much. I currently am testing out Maya's trial for 30days to get semi good with it. I guess I shall stick with it. Thank you for replying so fast, This school looks Amazing by the way.
It would behoove you the most to study and practice as many of the programs as you can. each one has it's ups and downs, and in the end, you can achieve the same goal with any program.
@ogias Okay thank you very much yes indeed Maya I tried but didn't like to much seemed like I was clicking buttons more that hotkeys so It was a very slow workflow. I may try it again tho?... I am still messing with Zbrush but it seems difficult at first to learn the interface. I always keep going back to Blender tho?.. I shall try some other programs too.
What programs did you use? I assume 3dsmax as the tags refere to. But what sculpting program did you use? Because I also asume you used one of those :p haha
@Callesw1 As it sounds like you are aware, Mudbox and ZBrush are very similar programs. Without contacting the student for specifics on what they used each program for it is hard to guess. If we were to venture a guess, at the time this was made VFS had both programs available to students as learning tools (since then we have entered an exclusive partnership with ZBrush). It is possible that Jelmer may have tried both programs as learning tools for different elements of the reel.

ok now rig and animate the model, simple 3d poses mean nothing, although nice for single shots like in ads or movie covers, learn to animate them tho and you will easily find a job.
Dude he's not an animator. He's clearly showing off his modeling and character design skills, which is a job on its own. Animators VERY rarely ever make their own models in production, so its not much harder for a good modeler such as this to find work. These "simple 3d poses" are all his employers would ever want to see from him.
Very true. And in fact, when recruiters visit VFS, they often steer students away from the idea of trying to be a "hot-shot generalist" - studios want someone who's incredibly good at their part of the pipeline. (Understanding the other aspects is important, of course.) Jelmer plainly doesn't need help finding a job - he's already building a reputation as a young modeler to watch and has the credits to show for it.
You know a single person doesn't do everything in production right? It's a lot easier getting the job you want if, in your reel, you show exactly what you're good at.
To thepryest: funny because while perusing your page I didn't come across anything that remotely resembles work as good as this, and in fact, I found nothing at all on your page. I'll tell you what I tell all the haters of the 3D Art medium: "Let's see you do better." and leave it at that :P
I know him. He used mudbox on only the bat. Everything else was modeled in xsi. If you look at the lineflow you can tell it's been modeled not sculpted. He used zbrush for his bumpmapping, not modeling
First of all, bumbmapping is not zbrush's purpose, and in that case it's called displacement mapping and second he used maya according to a CineFX magazine so -.-'
you don't need to treat people like idiots, Jelmer used Zbrush for bump mapping, I know this, I saw him do it. Also, he used XSI. He's an XSI modeler. Don't claim to know someones work because you read an article in a magazine.
That bat creature at 0:15 looks like Tiamat from Darksiders and the one at 1:50 looks like a Chocobo from Final Fantasy. :P

@Callesw1 You can see the software that Jelmer used in the credits at the end. He also used Softimage XSI, Mudbox, and ZBrush.

@VancouverFilmSchool Aaah, I see now! Think I missed it :p awesome anyway, but whats the purpose of using both Mudbox and Zbrush? Just curious :)
