Hey dude I´m from Germany, your guitar play is amazing am 16 years old I wish I could play like you I will be a great guitarist like you in future... keep on bye
The reason Gary is so looked down upon, is because a lot of his solos turn into pure wankery. Which is the truth. I still love him, but he does go a bit over the top with it from time to time.
very awsome solo. and i agree with you in your description all the way. it doesnt matter that people can play 5 billion notes per second if they cant put any feeling in it then its just showing off...and you my friend have feeling...good feeling.
To me that wasn't playin' the blues. It was some awesome guitar playing but it was rock. Having nothing to do with fast...listen to Hendrix the brother swung. He was playin Wah, crazy distortion etc...but he swung and he "felt" bluesy. "Shred" and "blues" don't really work for me...then again I like Bukka White, Robert Johnson and BB King best....so...
shred just means to play fast. and really, whats wrong with playing fast in blues? isnt blues just about expressing yourself? should that mean that you play what ever YOU think expresses YOURSELF the most? to some, that might be playing quickly. to some that might be slow. but to say one is blues and another isnt seems strange. is it about feeling? because you cant really guage that. playing fast also doesnt mean you are playing without emotion.
Janice Joplin said something to the effect of "Most women singers float around up here, with blues and rock you gotta get down in it, feel it, get gritty with it". If you play fast cause you are feelin' it great, hendrix did, but you can't just keep rippin' up and down the same pentatonic over and over and expect it to sound like The Blues...
ok, but thats not all he did. honestly, it wasnt even that fast for the most part. there were a few parts here and there that might be considered shred but for the most part it wasnt too fast. i think this is more blues rock anyway. so its not going to have the same type of phrasing as straight raw blues right off the bat. judging by who you like, you seem to be on the purist side. but some people just dont want to be slow. just like some people dont want to sing like joplin.
No I am not really a purest...pretty far from it. If I had to guess based only on this video I would guess the guy playing listens to a lot of hard rock and a lot of metal and maybe some blues. I guess, from memory around 1 minute in I might be say blues rock...I see it. But around 1:32 he looses me (as far as blues)... SRV and Hendrix do play fast but they swing and....I guess I can't be more clear. coulsonsam87 for sure rocks and I'd go see him in a band...I just don't feel the blues..
well forgive me but you sound like you are a bit on the purist side. and that may be true about him (i dont know), but i still think it sounded pretty bluesy. he still had a lot of blues phrases in there but just played faster than most would probably play them. but i guess i see what you mean about "swing" though. but you also have to remember that people didnt think the way hendrix played was blues and even with SRV. not as much but some people still though he was playing too fast etc..
The strum speed comments about SRV and Hendrix are just goofy...Bukka White did some really cool stuff that wasn't what I would call slow. I think it is the way the single notes and mini-phrases are used. If you listen to say Hendrix he still has that...FEEL. It isn't like it is a "riff" it is more like it is a little....accent. I don't know how to explain it in words...
i know exactly what u mean, i got 2 blues guitar improv vids adn this guy commented like 20 times on each of them complaining about how i was "doing it all wrong" cuz it was too fast n stuff lol.
where's your bullseye guitar zakk?:D finally a shredder who sounds good..never out of scale...in some parts i'd slow down a bit...one of my favourite guitarist on you tube
its rare that i hear something that really hts me... and this does. beautiful paying. is this still the pentatonic or what? plus, i hate gibson, but this, well.... fucking good.
It's people like you who make me want to play guitar. Truely awesome. By the way I can't get that tone out of my marshall AVT. It's true it's all in the fingers!
they both use heavy gauge strings (most metal guitarists use increadibly light gauge strings, eg Malmsteen uses gauge 8! heavy strings are associated with blues and jazz players.
how can you say his not playing the blues when he puts such passion into each one of those notes! lets focus on the differences between garys blues style and SRVs, they both play 16th note sections (or demiquavers if you understand that better) they both heavily rely on string bends and very distinctive vibrato, they both use an overdrive pedal, the use the same scales to play the blues, they play from the heart and soul!
The most important thing that you failed to mention was HOW MUCH THEY PLAY FAST!!! You are just flatout stupid. Yeah...SRV plays 16th note riffs sometimes, but unlike Gary (in those videos), he doesn't keep on laying them down one on top of another. Gary has the ability to play blues really well, and he does a lot. I just don't consider what he does in those videos blues. But it seems that your basic arguement is that only blues guitarists use the blues scale...and that's just not true.
alright then wise ass, how about srv scuttle butting. the whole of the main riff is based on 16th notes, and played at an extreem tempo. i spose thats not real blues then?
correct...SRV was always considered to be on the edge of blues and rock. from 83 to 90 he progressed as a player greatly and got more and more into a blues-feel as he went along. scuttle buttin', testify, rude mood, etc. are all bluesy, but not nessicarily what most would consider blues. Gary is the same way, many of his songs are bluesy, but are really rock. he does do many songs that could be considered blues though!
Once again: Gary = Good blues guitarist (who just isn't playing blues in those videos). Just because he's playing with blues legends doesn't mean that he's playing blues too!
Kid, you're really good...don't get me wrong. I don't think you understand though. I the video you were talking about, Gary isn't playing blues. The test I use to determine if it's blues is if they would play the same thing over a hard rock power chord chord progression. Gary's pinch harmonics and technically shredding techniques are that of metal, not blues! Now, Gary is a great blues guitarist, but that video is not of him playing blues. Same thing with your video here!
In addition, I'd like to add that Gary has many blues songs (one being at the 50th anniversary of the strat concert). He plays an amazing rendition of Red House, but the video you're talking about is shredding.
Okay, now I'm just gonna wait for all the angry comments to pour in!
hey dude, Gary definatly is playing the blues on that track, your point questioning if a solo would work over a hard rock chord progression flaws you argument because gary accents the blues progression by highlighting the chord changes.
and about the pinch harmonics, whats the big problem with adding more colour to your playing with a few different techniques? When SRV first came out he was slated because he didnt play the blues in the 'traditional' way, exactly the same things happening here, just because he plays differntly his still playing the blues!
True, but SRV wasn't playing metal. They thought that he was playing rock. These days, there is a huge difference between the two, so you can't argue that that's the same thing. Gary is a technical guitarist (who does play the blues, but he really developes into a bluesier player later on). Sure, he highlights the chord changes, but hard rock guitarists do too!!! Any guitar solo played over a blues shuffle is not blues!!!
Blues is not limited to certain techniques or certain speeds, rather, it is a feel - a soulfulness in your playing - an expression of emotion. If everyone was a closed-minded as you guitar playing/players would never have progressed. The best, the most groundbreaking players understood that. You really wanna ditch the anally-retentive, condesecending BS that has been the theme of your comments thus far, and show some damn respect.
you make a great point...and I agree. but new genres can form. a faster, more distorted, sometimes more angry version of the blues is called metal or hard rock. most genres of music today have developed from blues. So, my point is that Gary is playing with a technique which is that of a genre of music that has developed out of music. Sometimes, he heads back in the direction of what is commonly accepted as blues today, but in those videos: he plays with more of a hard rock feel.
sammy c crazys atthe guitar. hes aalso good at metal. i think sammy c should be a killer band with wicked metal songs and fast bluessongs. rock on dude
if you hadn't mentioned zakk and slash i would've. zakk being one of the fastest players around takes great pride in using his les pauls. Slash is another devoted les paul user and a big fan of playing the blues at fast paces.
That was really good! I saw some of your other videos too and man, your pretty dam good. keep it up and soon will be seeing you in a huge stadium giving a live performance.
lol fair point, the slow blues has alot of better qualitys! but playing fast also has alot of of advantages! judging by your name im sure you can aprechiate that side of playing??
Definitely. I'm apalled, and also very impressed at your level-headed response to our criticism. Gibson wasn't exactly made for speed.. just work on coordinating your hands man. Hope that helps, peace.
yeah, i see so many people take constructive critcism so badly on this site when the people are only trying to help! but yeah granted a few of my licks arnt all that tight, but no ones perfect ey? i would agrue about gibsons not being made for for speed tho, the les paul is an awesome guitar, its big heavy but its tone is sooooo good! players like zakk wylde, gary moore and even slash manage to get some serious speed out of one! especialy zakk wylde whos speed is right up there with the best!
Your Blues soloing style is very nice. What Scales did you use in this improv?? o yeah, rememba me, im chenny :D and also i really need a backing track like the one u got, lol help me out?? :D
You make a good point. It doesn't really matter how fast or slow you play, it's whether or not it comes from the heart. Albert King's strength was that he was able to squeeze so much out of relatively few notes. To some, that style of playing may seem to clash with Gary's Moore's approach. Personally, I think it's important to have both a good slow game and a good fast game.
