Why is she rushing ? My choir director never to go fast and I nearly fell off of the risers 3 times already and the 1st time was at a Veteran's Day Assembly. The 2nd was at the Christmas mass and the 3rd was at our concert and on top of it all I butchered the closing song and I almost said shit and it was almost caught on microphone. Poor Dee if I worked with her I would be worse than her and I am an alto/bass and I am girl!!!!
God, I just don't get this musical. My friend tried so hard, but it's feminist! ... But it's .... like witches? I think it's the witches. Some of the songs are pretty awesome though.
I saw this show for the 1st time last week. This was the 1st musical I've ever seen, and 1st show I've seen on Broadway. Because of Wicked, I love Broadway shows! I plan on going back to NYC next month, and seeing this show one more time. OMG it was amazing!
Glee ain't got anything on them!!! They are the best of the best... Glee just takes the songs and changes it up wit audo tune. These real cast of wicked actually sing this every week... So those haters of wicked... Just go sit on your couch and watch glee... Because if u don't have anything nice to say Sony say it at all!
@100ismyname You do know that very few of the singers on Glee use auto-tune? And that they have sang live very many times? Not that I'm hating on Idina Menzel, she is a Broadway legend, but please don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about. It's disrespectful to both them and Idina (especially considering she's been on it so many times).
I don't know why so many people are giving Idina so much hate. I agree this isn't her best Defying Gravity performance, but considering she had an asthma attack right before she performed this she sounds AMAZING. Talk about dedication :)
Well, it's so extraordinary song... By the way. I'm kindly inviting you to check out polish version of Defying Gravity. :) I'm completely sure you will like it.

@rober1236jua The fact that you come on a video and preach about how new musicals such as "Wicked" are terrible makes you seem extremely immature. Going on videos and saying crap like this is only something the most ignorant people would do. Judging on your channel, it's sad that me being a 15 year old, has to tell a grown man like you that you're being ridiculous. Do you see your favorite actors, producers, writers, or directors targeting present day shows? No? I didn't think so.
@Rawrceo Do you think you have some kind of point. Maybe at 15 you think statements like 'grow up' are profound and meaningful but they are the typical vapid silly nonsense that passes for most teen discussion most of the time.
@rober1236jua I think I have a very clear point. What's the point of going on videos commenting all about your hate? I hope you realize that it's a fact when people try to convert people to what they believe in with harsh words and bashing, they only get turned away more. That's the example between you and you're "favorite" kind of theatre. You're not helping yourself or anyone. I like how you completely avoided everything I told you too. How grown up of you ;)
@rober1236jua Really? It's the song that's spawned the biggest hit on Broadway in decades! This show has consistently been the biggest show in London's West End too. Broadway AND West End number one show. This song gives well over 1500 people in the Gershwin and the Apollo Victoria shivers or leaves them shaking from the sheer power of it.
@unshallowifyable We all know that how much money a piece of music makes in the years right after it is released is a good prediction of the quality or long term standing. Look at songs like #1 hits like "Come on Eileen", "Afternoon Delight", "Manic Monday", Manic Monday was number 1 in UK, US, Norway, Austria, Canada, Germany, and others. And because these and all other Casey's Coast to Coast which will live on forever like Mozart and Bach.
@rober1236jua Sorry, but what's your point there? If anything you're proving my point! This show has made hundreds of millions of dollars on Broadway alone, never mind around the world! This song has been pulling in the money for eight years, with no sign of slowing!
@unshallowifyable Let me make this easy for you: You said the song is good because it was popular. I point out counter examples. I live near the West End, and the reason for this success is simple, firstly London and NY musicals are mostly for tourists, who more and more are from Asia and don't understand English, musicals have suffered a great deal over 20 years because. West End and Broadway are playing a lot of shit right now, from Spider Man to Rock of Age, Musicals really suck these days
@rober1236jua I think a lot of musicals suck today, but Wicked is certainly not one of them. I reintroduced me to musicals, something I've not been into for a while. I saw it live for the first time recently and it blew me away.
@unshallowifyable Boy this is hard let me say it this way 'lots of movies that make money suck', Some of the top recording acts right now, and for some time are the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Beiber. In fact it is the presence of such big money, and the inability of Musicals to take risks and experiment which are making them shit. You could simply not write something great like South Pacific or Porgy and Bess for today's Broadway.
@rober1236jua Ok, half of that contradicts your last point about longevity of profit making being a good sign of something's quality. Feel free to criticise Wicked, its songs and its incredibly hard-working actors and actresses, but you won't be able to change its success. This musical is also most certainly NOT aimed at non-English speaking tourists. I've been to the West End to see it 5 times & I know many others who have done the same or more.
@unshallowifyable Contradictions, what? Longevity? This piece of shit has been around only since 2003. I have ties older than it. Anyways what does it matter, today Broadway has become trash. The overwhelming mixed to negative reception the overall musical has gotten among critics in the media says it all. "the production manages to feel at once overblown and empty." Wicked is the poster child for everything wrong with Broadway and well deserved South Park's treatment of it
@rober1236jua Sorry, but it sounds like you don't understand musical theatre. Eight years is a long time to run on Broadway! The MEDIA says it all? Have you even seen it? As Stephen Schwartz said, "We may have split the critics, but we didn't split the audience and that's what matters"
Also, how can it POSSIBLY be a bad thing if it introduces people to musical theatre as a genre? I'd not have given it a second thought if it weren't for Wicked!
@unshallowifyable The media says it all? They you quote the creator of this shit admitting the that the thing got lots of bad reviews. And yes it can be a bad thing if it crowds out good new creative productions that take chances (which it does NOT) or really excellent productions of things like West Side Story or other classics. Shit like Wicked, Spider Man, Shriek, Mama Mia, is killing what was a vibrant creative American art form. Musicals once produced the best songs in America! No longer
@rober1236jua i agree with all of those... except wicked. the music is too good. schwartz is a genius. spiderman shrek mamamia they all suck. wicked is good.
@rober1236jua I don't think you've seen the musical. Schwartz uses themes brilliantly to highlight different aspects of the show. So it's not the most complex of songs, but that's part of what makes it so beautiful. It's a song about self-empowerment and has genuinely helped a lot of people feel confident about themselves - as has the rest of the show!
And actually, you're being censured, not censored. You're still allowed to express your opinion freely, as are we.

@unshallowifyable I have heard every single song in this piece of trash. They are terrible, not fit to the standards of the 1950s great musicals of which I have seen almost all, many live. I profoundly doubt some story from the Wizard of Oz (not even the first musical to re-tell the Oz story by the way) can make these trash song brilliant. I mean the story of how the wicked witch got her grove back?
@rober1236jua This is NOT about "getting her groove back" IDIOT! It's about the time before "the wizard of OZ"! It's brilliant, funny, and makes you think about how we ended up with OZ! The numbers are exactly what all those great musicals were from back then and some of those old musicals SUCKED! Not to mention the hundreds of versions of small town girl comes to the city and makes it big story told over and over! If you have not seen the show then you HAVE NO IDEA!
@rober1236jua Right, seeing as you're judging something you've not seen that I hold dear, I'm gonna do the same. Those 50s musicals were mainly SHIT. The songs ridiculously camp and the storylines passable. I'd also say that you're a grumpy middle aged single man who wallows in self pity and cynicism.
We all know that the idea to retell the Oz story had been done before. What makes this musical great is its message - something none of your beloved 50s musicals put across anywhere near as well.
@rober1236jua You seem like an adult person with things to do in his life... Don't you have anything better to do then trash a musical you have never seen based on the fact that you liked how musicals where made 60 years ago?
If you don't like it then stop watching Youtube video's about it and stop listening to its songs.
@imperialifty I am not a hater, I am a lover, I love art and culture so much that when I see big business flood out the greatness of previous genius with ever more moronic shit like this (don't even get me started with Spiderman) I am revolted. These musicals of 60s years ago dealt with racism, religion, social class, poverty, war, crime, and power. Today we get the bubble gum of exploitation
@rober1236jua I think that's not quite right. If you see wicked, and read the book it was based on, it touches on racism in a more abstract way. It touches on the political problems and corruption in the government and on reaching a goal bigger than yourself. I agree that some musicals like spiderman may be kind of...wrong. But, I still think some musicals of today touch issues of racism, religion, social class (think Spring Awakening and 21 guns). I love Sweeney Todd, Phantom, West Side too.

@unshallowifyable Musicals used to be brilliant, in the 1950s you would have Rogers and Hammersmith producing songs like Funny Valentine for a Broadway run. Jazz bop musicians would listen to them and start using them in their sets. These sets would define the first globally popular African American art form, and is performed even today. This new Big Business shit has killed that flow of creativity and art, turning Broadway in to the Disneyland it is today, and shit like Wicked is the wrost
@unshallowifyable Wicked was the first musical I've ever seen and now I have such an appreciation for it :D Wish I knew more about them because so many of my friends are into theater..
just to let all of you ppl who wrote bad comments back to me on my comment just to let u know i am an actress and i can sig and if you dont belive me then wait for me to post a video
You guys shouldnt hate. Idina is amazing, she's the original and you should respect her. she has a great voice, and she plays Elphaba pretty fucking good.
@WickedProductions100 lol yeah i get a little cocky sometimes with the #FACT stuff XD they're all great. i've never heard of rachel though ima look her up
@suttonfosteristhebes No Not even your talking about two different talents sutton foster has a beautiful voice but idina menzel is a great singer and she always adds so much to her character so in my opinion you are wrong so thats all i have to say
Her vocal is FLAWLESS, yes the arrangement changed a bit, likely to shorten it for late night television. Is there crap going around in here she was sick or something? Damn idiots thinking they are 'in the know' about something they know nothing about. As for other Elphabas, I pity the actress that has to follow in Idena's footsteps, but I'm oft pleasantly surprised when I see a road show. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
I like how she closes her eyes as she belts out the song...I would be terrified toe ven look down, let alone close my eyes being that high up int he air on a little tiny platform
Everyone's a damn critic, but shit, aint no one beating down our doors trying to give us a damn tony or sing on the late show. if she is sick, hell even on her worst day she can outsing majority of the wanna be Elphabas, including the "youtube" ones. give her a damn break and give credit where it is due. none of the elphaba's i've heard, have sucked just all different, im digging the diversity in all of them. Elphabas past, present, and future, keep doing ya thing!!!
@michaeldeboer i agree......she's so rushed and she sounds as if she ran around the block just before the curtain went up....she has done SOOOOOO much better in other performances!!!!
GUUYYYSSS! PLEASE! EVERYBODY who's ever played Elphaba in a professional capacity has been incredible. Can we PLEASE STOP with this "so-and-so's better than Idina" or "Idina's better than everybody"? They all play Elphaba differently and all have equally amazing voices. Much love <3
@pianomansas haha no. Rachel, Teal, Shoshona are AMAZING. Idina is just one Elphie. As far as I'm concerned Rachel kicks everyone's ass and I started out with Idina but she ain't my fav.
@michaeldeboer I saw her perform on YT...Wow she holds the notes TWICE count it TWICE as long as every single other Elphaba I've heard, In Dutch of course but DAMN that girl can sing. I can't believe she can hold them that long. In English though she is a taaaaaad weak probably because of the difference in cadence and what not but she IS awesome yes.
Best live performance I've found on here (:

And yes it can be a bad thing if it crowds out good new creative productions that take chances (which it does NOT) or really excellent productions of things like West Side Story or other classics. Shit like Wicked, Spider Man, Shriek, Mama Mia, is killing what was a vibrant creative American art form. Musicals once produced the best songs in America! No longer
rober1236jua 2 months ago
@rober1236jua i agree with all of those... except wicked. the music is too good. schwartz is a genius. spiderman shrek mamamia they all suck. wicked is good.

@jive0in Come on a two note piano background do-duh do-duh do-duh as she says she is tired of playing with other people's games
rober1236jua 2 months ago

I mean the story of how the wicked witch got her grove back?
rober1236jua 2 months ago
@rober1236jua This is NOT about "getting her groove back" IDIOT! It's about the time before "the wizard of OZ"! It's brilliant, funny, and makes you think about how we ended up with OZ! The numbers are exactly what all those great musicals were from back then and some of those old musicals SUCKED! Not to mention the hundreds of versions of small town girl comes to the city and makes it big story told over and over! If you have not seen the show then you HAVE NO IDEA!
tygersilver 2 months ago
@rober1236jua Right, seeing as you're judging something you've not seen that I hold dear, I'm gonna do the same. Those 50s musicals were mainly SHIT. The songs ridiculously camp and the storylines passable. I'd also say that you're a grumpy middle aged single man who wallows in self pity and cynicism.
We all know that the idea to retell the Oz story had been done before. What makes this musical great is its message - something none of your beloved 50s musicals put across anywhere near as well.
unshallowifyable 2 months ago
@rober1236jua You seem like an adult person with things to do in his life... Don't you have anything better to do then trash a musical you have never seen based on the fact that you liked how musicals where made 60 years ago?
If you don't like it then stop watching Youtube video's about it and stop listening to its songs.
Haters will hate...
imperialifty 2 months ago
@imperialifty I am not a hater, I am a lover, I love art and culture so much that when I see big business flood out the greatness of previous genius with ever more moronic shit like this (don't even get me started with Spiderman) I am revolted. These musicals of 60s years ago dealt with racism, religion, social class, poverty, war, crime, and power. Today we get the bubble gum of exploitation
rober1236jua 2 months ago

GUUYYYSSS! PLEASE! EVERYBODY who's ever played Elphaba in a professional capacity has been incredible. Can we PLEASE STOP with this "so-and-so's better than Idina" or "Idina's better than everybody"? They all play Elphaba differently and all have equally amazing voices. Much love <3
