  • Ok folks. Im a black guy, and even though I find this to be a bit offesnsive, please remember this was the style at the time.

If you just chill out and enjoy the cartoon youll see how hilarious and well done it is. Im liking and adding this to my favorites,

  • Better than a Tyler Perry film.

  • the bad thing is that stlye being played is called bogie wogie which no black person under 30 would be caught dead listening o!!

  • I would have expected Goldilocks to be white, to tell you the truth. That would have made it even more racist because you know she would be drawn much more attractive than the other characters.

  • Funny, I don't hear people complaining about, say, PHINEAS AND FERB's Dr. Doofenshmirtz being insulting to Germans. Why are black people singled out for racial sensitivity? Isn't that ironically more racist than anything? I remember seeing promos for Disney's THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG and thinking that Tiana was so generic and bland she looked like a white girl who happened to have dark skin. Now Goldilocks and So White (COAL BLACK AND DE SEBBEN DWARVES) looked authentic, and quite attractive.

  • This is so offensive to bears...

  • It's not racist. It's stereotypical. Theres a difference people!

  • @sleepyasthesouth Because google is the bastion of truth in a sea of lies... by the way. Andy Sandberg says: "YOU CAN'T TRUST THE SYSTEM!... MAN!" It's not only called stereotyping. It's called exaggeration for the sake of ANIMATION. Animation is based on exaggerations and easy to understand archetypes and stereotypes. If someone doesn't take the time to get to know someone else, is it the fault of animation? Is animation as evil as google is good in your book?

  • @frstypuffpow9790 That was wrong too. Elvis was a big celebrity, and he should've set a better example for his fans. And true, a lot of other genres have their own faults and are becoming parodies of themselves as well. But with cartoons like these, the viewers have to realize that they were from a different time, and strive to be better and treat others equally.

  • @frstypuffpow9790 That cartoon doesn't look much different from a rap video of today. Maybe rap videos are the new minstrel shows. *shrug*

  • Actually, I don't see much racism there. It doesn't look any more racist than the average rap video or blaxploittion movie.

  • also, i really liked the music the three bears played in the beginning. how would one classify that type of music? swing, jazz?

  • im sorry but i must raise the question. if you were to draw a cartoon which depicted black people in some way, how would you go about it? i think this was a job well done, poking some fun here and there. nothing offensive. and of course the characters aren't accurately drawn, it's a cartoon for crying out loud!

  • @frstypuffpow9790 Good point, but I find this cartoon very complementary of our people's dance and musical skills. It all depends on how one views it.

  • The way they were drawn was kind of over the top. I mean with the lips and all.

  • Im black and I honestly dont find this very offensive. I remember watching this as a kid and thinking nothing of racial stereotypes. lol I do however find it offensive to go into walmart and see a 4 year old african american child with pants sagging to the floor.

  • I'm Black , and I found it to be a tribute and blatent stereotyping....and funny as hail!!

  • You all know that Warners hired the first black animator, right.

  • I doesn't look very racist. I mean they are just bears. And Black bears do exist

  • 3:12 was really funny lol

  • im black and I find this cartoon entertaining!

  • Those Negroes! They sure are a musical people, aren't they?

  • Sorry granma, have to see ya later, I'm working at lockheed as a rivatater

  • I like it! Yes, it's racist- but don't forget the wolf hates to jitterbug!

  • It seems that Warner Bros. is finally getting around to releasing this and the other Censored 11 cartoons on DVD or least they are looking into it

  • @Mr111989

I actually never heard about this considering of a release of these cartoons. Do you have any more info on it?

  • @BankaiIchigo12345 Search for it on Google"Censored 11 DVD release" or go to a site called toonzone.net if you want to know.

  • I'd do Goldilocks.

  • Thanks for posting the great vid.. If this is racist than I want everything with Homer Simpson or Elmer Fudd banned.. If the wimps with the over active imagination were honest they would have to have most vintage cartoons banned. They were made for mature adults to see before mature movies at a theatre. Even the makers of the vintage Bugs Bunny said that their toons were never meant for kids... What about Betty Boop and the way she dressed and acted or Popeye always fighting.. and the girls HOT

  • Where are the whites complaining that Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam don't look realistic?! Where are the animal rights activists complaining that rabbits are being made fun of by having Bugs Bunny standing up like a human, which is obviously an unrealistic depiction of a rabbit?

That's right. You DON'T hear any of these people complaining about the cartoons I mentioned above.

So people shouldn't complain about this cartoon either! SHEESH!

  • @BenHutchinson1 It's still perfectly alright to stereotype hillbillies as well.

  • @BenHutchinson1 Did black people ever enslave, segregate and oppress whites for 100s of years and then, to add insult to injury, create these characters and stereotypes in order to laugh at them? No, It is very different from yosemite sam and co.

While I support these cartoons as an important part of history, downplaying how painful they are to blacks is terrible.

  • In short, anybody who has censored or banned this cartoon is a MORON! I can't necessarily say the same for other cartoons labeled racist because some of them indeed seem to be racist. However speaking about this specific cartoon, I can honestly say I see no racism in it. Anyone who has banned it, censored it, or called it racist is being an IDIOT!

  • And the human in this supposedly racist cartoon is NOT some dumb racist stereotype to make her look ugly. Instead I find she is actually quite attractive. The rest aren't even supposed to be humans, just animals, so I can't really evaluate them the same way. Yes they have certain black stereotypical characteristics applied to them, but then it's not even realistic to apply any racial characteristics to bears or wolves, because they don't have a "white" race or "black" race. It's just a cartoon.

  • What's wrong with having black characters in cartoons? I mean it would be more racist to NOT have them in cartoons. It would be trying to imply that blacks don't exist. In fact Disney's latest cartoon movie The Princess and The Frog, is about a black princess. I don't hear people complaining about that. In fact i heard that Disney did so because they needed to finally have a black main character in a cartoon movie so it wouldn't look like they were trying to exclude blacks.

  • Political correctness or not, this is still a great cartoon. Plus, I credit this short for introducing me to the awesomeness that was Raymond Scott (that's "Twilight in Turkey" being played in the beginning by the bears).

  • Amazing how a lot of publicity was given the Coal Black cartoon, but I never even heard of this one until today!

  • So, when I watch this, I cannot help but read the comments. Why is it that a lot of black Americans try to attach racial problems of the past to today's white Americans; all-the-while, never stopping their children or themselves of using slurs towards whites? Let's look at the Chappelle show.... He makes multiple jokes and racial slurs towards white and his actions are condoned by blacks... This absolutely blows my mind. I'm by no means racist in any way... just observant.

  • At least the girl is drawn quite attractively.:)

  • those ladies sure could dance :3

  • They begin it with a reference to a real black person; talented hands on the piano. This is affection, not ridicule.

  • nothing racist about this and anyone who says so is 100% race baiter

  • audio is way out of sync

  • Those lips are epic

  • this is racist: people being hosed down, slavery, lynchings, burned by fire, tar, or napalm, hate towards a certain race, 1960's, 1800's-1870's still to today!

cartoons such as this and the censored 11: comedy, culture, stories, character,CARTOONS!!!!!!!

  • god bless youtube. . . where you can find all sorts of things. even banned cartoons.

  • @fenrir218 amen

  • Well, that was creepy and disturbing; great attributes for a great cartoon <_<

  • damm wats wit them big ass light skinned lips lol i know they sposed to be black but dayum

  • You stupid f*ks wouldn't know what "racist" meant if it was rammed up your azz-holes.

These are caricatures---FAR, FAR above the mentality of you uneducated fools who, oddly enough, obtained just enough brainpower to log onto youtube and key in your worthless immature diatribes about such things.

These cartoons are classics of American History.

  • @MrQ1941 You're not wrong. All the WB classic 'toons reflect the immediate history of their release date. Those whom study such history, know that Mel Blanc and company, are emulating the voices of real celebrities like Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, "Rochester" Anderson, and sometimes even Cab Calloway. They would also recognize the music of Raymond Scott and other composers. The tagline at the end are direct Jimmy Durante quotes. You know the caricatures on Animaniacs. Learn History!!

  • @professortheremin Thank you for the information (seriously). I did not mean to imply anything differently than this. My use of "caricature" was meant to be a compliment and nothing different. I just get sick and tired of the "racist" tag being attached to works of art like this. They are like painting IMO--reflecting the times for which they were created.

  • @MrQ1941 I understand that you meant "caricature" as a compliment, and get just as mad as you, when I see people who refuse to learn about any other time than their own, mouth off on great art like Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, et cetera, without understanding the artist, or the art. I'm with you Mr. Q. Every frame of that classic animation can be blown up, and framed as art. Clampett was actually bolder than Tex Avery...when Tex was at Warner Bros.

  • For comdenominator: Lighten up. We all know about the injustices in U.S. History and right or wrong cartoons made fun of all ethenticities. Also, I am of German/Jewish hertiage. These cartoons are no worse/no better than cartoons with 'cartoonish' white characters. Whether or like it or not, these cartoons are a part of the American Heritage and were drawn for humor or statement of the times. All in the eye of the beholder.

  • why they got to be jivin'? and why they got to be in the south? im from baltimore! seriously though, this shouldnt be classified as "racist". there was nothing really wrong with it...except the big lip thing. im a little offended by that one...

  • i think what is racist about these cartoons is not so much the cartoons themselves, but the fact that these were the only depictions of black folk in the popular culture. hillbillies and the rich get pretty rough treatment at the hands of the boys at warner brothers, but they are not the only depictions of white folk in the culture.

  • Only people who find this racist are ignorant white people. A black person sees nothing wrong with this. What is wrong with coloring a character with dark skin, correctly portraying a dialect and having them dance around? White characters are done this way everday. This country has become a sad sack. The United States of the Offended.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE im black, i see black people. if i was young tho i would prob still see black ppl casue i would be too slow to know they bears

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE

I agree. I don't know any black people that look like this. the fact that people attribute these cartoon depictions to black people is what makes it racist. if no one related it to black people it would just be a bunch of silly bears with accents

  • @bostonmooch ur right ! this cartoon was NOT funny at all this shit sucks ! the lips and shit ? c'mon this is fucked up ! as a kid all you see is dancing bears but as a gwrown person you really see the intent on this peice of stereotypical , mythological bullshit ! word ! this shit fuckin sucks !

  • @bostonmooch That was how Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll were able to do their Amos 'N' Andy humor in 1961, when the Andy Brown and Kingfish voices were given to animated animals. YouTube "Calvin and the Colonel".

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE What's wrong with it is that it's done by white people and reeks of contempt. But otherwise, thank you for speaking up for Black people (Not)

  • @hjamespatterson Ummm....I was not speaking up for any color of people, Pugsley. You come on here and try to make a remark that makes YOU feel good about yourself (not) and instead you just look ignorant. Anything else from your sack of stupid you care to share? Leave the cartoon world alone and just laugh at whats funny w/o reading anything into it, Pugs.

  • Black people sure are funny.

  • You mean Black People be funny.

  • It is just entertainment. No more racist than depicting a Homer Simpson and thinking it is a stereotype of a caucasian buffoon. In this cartoon, they're characterizinhg popular artists of the day, specifically Thomas "Fats" Waller . . . no harm. It was a different time.

  • @BillyRockfish Your take on this is somewhat shortsighted. As with the other 'Censored 11,' besides being crudely mocked when these cartoons were made, blacks also endured harsh discrimination: couldnt go to adequate schools, couldnt eat in restuarants, stay in hotels, get hired for jobs, or vote in the manner that white people could. Blacks could get arrested for anything that a white person 'deemed' to be a crime. Blacks could literally get lynched for looking at white person the 'wrong way.'

  • @BillyRockfish As for the Fats Waller and other 'popular artist of the day,' they couldnt even go in the front door of the clubs they played in, and other blacks couldnt even come to the club to watch them perform. Have you ever sat down and spoken to a black person who lived through those time? Its sadder than you can imagine. Whether mockingly humerous, or downright filthy, the only depictions of black people were negative. Imagine jews livin in nazi germany being ridiculed nonstop. Its Sick

  • The only thing thats really racist is the characters and there traits, and it certainly isn't hateful.

  • lol now that's a damn shame!

  • C'mon, this isn't racist. BTW, Goldilocks is smokin'. 3:15

  • I don´t find it racist, I find it funny. Shoudn´t be one of the eleven censored.

  • Totally didn't see anything racist about that. Stereotypes? Yeah, but it was funny, not hateful.

  • it like a sequel to "red hot riding hood"

  • One of the censored 11

  • Mel Blanc, stupid. Old-time comedian and "man of a thousand voices".

  • funny.

  • True, they're racist, but little kids are only going to see funny singing bears. I saw this cartoon when I was little back in the early 90s and I just saw bears.

  • How did you see it? I heard this cartoon was banned.

  • If you were lucky to have a parent from those days. They saved the VHS. :-D

  • @daakuivory It's both ridicule and tribute. Ridicule with caricature of black stereotype, but tribute to that swinging music that they couldn't deny. I mean, even in the midst of racism, the music that black people were playing back then simply changed music forever. There were people who wouldn't let a black guy eat at the front tables of their restaurants, but ironically wanted them to perform before the crowds at lounges. So it's both. And you see how shapely they drew Goldilocks, too...

  • And I would so DO Goldilocks! What a fox!!! She sure wore out that poor wolf!

  • I loved this one as a kid. Get over it.

The only reason these were ever banned is because Ted Turner's sorry ass bought all the rights and took it upon himself to ban them.

  • No---the cartoons were banned back when the pre-August 1948 library was owned by United Artists.

As for PD, the newest one in it is All This and Rabbit Stew.

  • Yes, this cartoon and others like it *were* banned, but they are no longer banned in the way that we know the term, as they are now part of the public domain.

However, considering that nowadays, cartoons in the U.S. are generally geared towards children instead of adults the way they used to be, it is unlikely that any network will show these cartoons outside of a documentary or otherwise educational format.

  • Comment removed

  • It is also important to note that today's cartoons for children are all politically correct... or at least they are benign in nature.

It's common sense that networks do not broadcast "gangsta rap" or any other explicit material as part of their regular children's programming.

Therefore, it's unfair to compare these cartoons with "gangsta rap," since they are presented in two entirely different contexts.

  • Networks censor to cover their asses.

So without providing substantial historical framework and giving kids a chance to develop the cultural sensitivity and cognitive skills required to separate the mixed messages sent by these old cartoons.. which, by the way, is a skill that many adults of this generation haven't mastered...

it just wouldn't make sense for our "politically correct" networks to open Pandora's Box and broadcast these great old cartoons alongside the kids' shows of today.

  • This cartoon suddenly came back to me when I saw it listed. I saw it as a kid and it hit me in a funny way. It was the pace and music. It was different. I am so glad to see it again. It was a work of art for sure.

  • You hate black people with all your heart don't you?

  • You ain't the three bears!, You bet I ain't honey but lordy who cares.

  • man this is cool i love this cartoon

  • why was it censored?

  • Because we live in a PC world.

  • racial stereotype
