A tractor trailer with an extra trailer traveling about 60+ mph while crunch a lot of cars quite easily ... although I think he could have punched through the 5 cop cars at the end but they needed to set up Foley as being recognized for being an undercover cop too.
By my count, aside from the police cars (all Chrysler vehicles), the truck smashed three Chryslers, two Fords, two Chevys, two AMC's and a Volkswagen. The cars at the very end when the driver bailed looked like a couple of Chevys, but I'm not sure.
I wonder if Chrysler donated most of the cars for this scene? I think GM did similar in 'Bad Boys II,' when the woman being chased was in a GMC Yukon Denali, and most of the cars that got smashed or thrown off the car-carrier were GM vehicles.
@FastbackJJZ109 They mostly just smash up cars. No buildings get damaged. Likely the cars were junkers (they're mostly 1970's cars or earlier) or ones provided by the studio for the purpose of being wrecked. It's easy enough to get permission to film somewhere.
@FastbackJJZ109 Detroit made a lot of money off that film and a little bit of local property destruction in a rundown neighborhood certainly did not hurt any chances at rebuilding. ... Makes you wonder how much money Detroit could make nowadays and how it would benefit their economy.
@TheCounsilDotCom A common question, and one I have no answer to, I'm afraid. All Martin Brest said of the incident is the bus was spun by the same stunt driver driving the truck, so it was indeed made for this film. But I agree it is out of place in the sequence.
@JackMacyntire Well, he was already sitting in it with the motor running and the cops didn't know he was even in the cab. He took a chance and caught them off guard.
I love this scene. My only problem with it is it clearly involved so much more budget than the rest of the film, after this the ending almost seems like an anti-climax. Classic film though, I don't normally like Eddie Murphy but in this he's awesome.
I saw that sign, too. The ones Im still trying to figure out are near the beginning of the scene. Also the "Serwers" store where the vegetable truck got slammed.
Theres also a shot of them driving down the road and you can see "viking Motel" in the background. I think thats on Grand River and its still called Viking Motel.
@zambonitron The vegetable truck gets slammed at that Michigan Avenue & 30th Street intersection mentioned here. Most the surrounding buildings are gone though. And yeah, the Viking Motel, now closed, is located on maps in that location from the movie (you can see the distinct skyscraper in the background).
@KarlLeroyMD Presumably to avoid hitting the truck, although they messed it up by not having the truck in the shot with it. I assume they were intended to narrowly avoid colliding head on.
@KarlLeroyMD My thoughts exactly. Should have left that one on the cutting room floor. Bus spinning is a great shot but completely random without seeing a reason.
Still, great to see a chase that looks real compared to all the overcut CGI crap these days. The stunt man hanging off chains is great.
Also, I love that Foley does nothing except get slammed around. I bet if it was written today he would somehow cause the truck to crash thru some ingenious superhuman feat.
Respond to this video... Just found it sorry :) wow the area has changed so much it has become a ghost town!!! were has all the houses gone and its so overgrown!!!
Ive been trying to figure out where all the scenes were filmed for awhile. Have you figured out where the corner was at 2:15 where he folded up the green Ford?
The 2:15 shot is on 30th Street at the Magnolia intersection. The telephone pole is there. The houses he passes going down 30th right afterwards are still mostly present (a pale green house in particular.) The roadblock is at the end of 30th on Jackson Avenue (with the now ruined school in the background).
My bad..the scene i asked about was the one you mentioned....i thought at first you meant the scene where he crashes, loses the trailer and runs off....
The bus spin was also 30th and Michigan. The 2 story building with the billboard in the background is still there. Its a very abandoned area now. Almost every building and house is gone.
I haven't seen this movie for ages.. I used to have all the three movies on VHS in my pre-teen years. And I loved this song.. untill now I forgot how great it was.
And I rembember that I used to love Judge Reinholdt (Rosewood) in these movies. I thought he was damn cool.
the Pointer Sisters are one of the best female artists ...wow..and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop...that truck scene is amazing Classic movie and classic Pointer Sisters
I will never forget one of they guys from the cigarette deal appearing on Beverly Hills Cop II, and the look on Axel's face when he realized who the jerk was.
Axel: Hey man, take off your glasses! I THOUGHT THAT WAS YOU!!! You almost got busted, I did get busted!
1:25-The cab is at the corner or Brush and Winder in Detroit. Most of the buildings are long gone now, and the streets have partially been reconfigured.
1:43-Viking Motel-Still there, same name.2700 block of Grand River.Area also looks a bit different.
1:25-The cab is at the corner or Brush and Winder in Detroit. Most of the buildings are long gone now, and the streets have partially been reconfigured.
Don't know if it's just me, but I would get ECSTATIC when watching movies/shows with cars crashing, turning over, flying off cliffs, exploding or getting crumpled into pancakes.
This scene represents something common in 80s action flicks/shows: The glorious DEATH OF CARS. I also loved Dukes of Hazzard, ChiPs, A-Team and Fall Guy for these very reasons :-)
@TURBODORK2 For the movie, the truck's front bumper was reinforced with a steel beam which is what allows it to do that without rendering itself undriveable. I'm uncertain what sort of damage it would do with its normal bumper but it's still huge and heavier than the cars it's hitting.
I always loved the cigarette truck chase. The one in this scene who did the best acting was the driver. He doesn't say a thing yet so much is perfectly conveyed by his facial expressions. He is a complete maniac. You can tell he doesn't give a turkey and knows he is going to get caught at some point but he goes through it all anyway. It is as great as the end of White Heat.
@MrDontstareitsrude Christine was a 1958 Fury in the book. In the movie they used 1958 Plymouth Belvederes for Christine which is a similiar model but not the exact same.
That scene always makes me smile I love the last few seconds when he is smashing into all the parked cars as he drives down the street, Wouldnt happen in the real world these days as the cops are not allowed to chase you if the situation gets to dangerous.
@hi99au:Whaaaaaaaaaah! The movie's 27 years old.I think it's a little late to be griping about "mistakes" made in such a dynamic scene where lots can go wrong.
When the police car hits the barrels during the opening chase, we see a shot of it from the inside of the patrol car behind it. In the next exterior shot, the camera is visible in the front seat.
During cigarette truck chase, the plate on the truck's hood, which is left from the crash with a vegetable truck, disappears in the scene after the bus breaks, the reappears in the next scene. Also, in the following close-ups you can see the plate has been attached with a wire in the middle.
Continuity: When the cigarette deal gets broken up, three different models of police cars are involved in the first 20 seconds. Possibly they had rapid support, but definitely a different car emerges from the alley than the one which began backing out of it.
Revealing mistakes: Obvious stunt double for Axel during the opening chase. His arms have become more muscular, his hair is different, and he has grown a few inches
the sound at 2:10 is just so awesome it seems like a song =D

During cigarette truck chase, the plate on the truck's hood, which is left from the crash with a vegetable truck, disappears in the scene after the bus breaks, the reappears in the next scene. Also, in the following close-ups you can see the plate has been attached with a wire in the middle.

Continuity: When the cigarette deal gets broken up, three different models of police cars are involved in the first 20 seconds. Possibly they had rapid support, but definitely a different car emerges from the alley than the one which began backing out of it.
