he wrote this in the early 80's...rings true, for someone, in every small town in America today.
The thing is, how could you (Bruce) write a song like this without going through something similar, you know what I mean? I'm haunted by this song. I lost a job, lost myself, and lost my gal...all I wanted was my gal back. You gotta keep on keeping on, man!
This elegiac song of disillusion, abandonment and loss is poignantly contemporary. The things that connect a man to his community have slipped from this guy's grasp: job, wife, a house of their own. The life he had intended and expected has been taken from him by forces beyond his control. His American Dream has been hijacked, and his part in it has slipped from being a stakeholder in the building process to an unwitting accomplice in stabilizing the rails that are steering his destruction.
i lost my job today.... they are sending my job to mexico. lost my wife a month ago to an old friend. my best friend, kairo my dog of 13 years died of colon cancer a few months ago...... 'don't i feel like i'm in a downbound train' i came home and played this song because that's how i feel.
@TheSnakeeater2012 same thing happened to my friend recently and he got kicked out of his house bec he couldnt pay the rent, hes retired, but things are looking up for him now he is remarrying in november and has kept his chin up but is still moving around looking for a place to live with his teenage son.
lifes ups and downs, just stick to it and things will improve
This song stands up pretty well on it's own. However, if you had heard "The River" or "Point Blank", you'd know that it was all formula at this point. This is the "sad song" on "Born inthe USA", the album where he hit a fork in the road and went the wrong way. But everything up thru "Nebraska" was brilliant.
When I saw him live for the first time I had been brought there by a friend, I was not so sure, thought it could be boring.... Like it or not, but he's the only singer I've ever seen that gives 250 % for more than 3 hours everytime, he's a pure inspiration and a genius... And what a genuine lovely guy, no wonder why he's the Boss !
A Down Bound Train is a train taking you to hell. Jon Landau, Bruce's manager, introduced Bruce to the works of John Steinbeck, who most famously wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" about working folks who lost their livelihood, jobs, home and hope.
Bruce, who had been mining these themes as it related to his father and brother-in law and the factories and working cIass folks in NJ, expanded his exploration of these themes to encompass all of the USA. I also believe the reason the narrator is swinging a hammer on a road gang at the end of the song is that his losing his job, his lady love and his home lead to him killing her and burying her in the woods.
When he got caught he was put on a road gang, another staple of old folk songs. The concept of the poor economy and the loss of jobs and hope of the working man leading to crime is a theme that Bruce has explored numerous times in his work, especially on Nebraska and the River albums. All of that being said, I Love this song and agree with all of you that it is a sin that this song hasn't received its' due.
this could be the anthem of every working stiff when the economy tanks . i wonder if the' smartest guys in the room' ever consider the fallout from wars , subprime mortgages , housing bubbles and other money grabs .
I'm a big Springsteen fan, I think as a fan you're allowed to criticise as well as praise.
"Queen of the supermarket" is a total disgrace and unbelievable that this unbelievably beautiful and stunning poetic "Downbound train" comes from the same guy, I guess 30yrs changed his outlook on life a bit.
@EbutUoyFAN666 ,,,,,just read your comment on the friggin awful "Queen of the Supermarket"...agree with you totally,,been a major fan of the boss for 30yrs & that song really tested me,,,what the hell was goin on & how come some of the guys in the band or the great Jon landau did'nt have a word in his ear,,,however,,it was a blip on an otherwise brilliant career,,,so we'll continue enjoying The Boss.....slainte.
My heart pounds when I hear this song..a poet would not be without these words...it is clear that Bruce is the soul within me that speaks and feels and gives to others...I will not be without the music of Bruce!
For those who think Springsteen music isn't great .... go read the lyrics to his songs. Don't listen to them first, read the lyrics. He is the ultimate poet and storyteller. Add in the fact that he writes virtually everything he records and you have yourself one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. Obviously there are 14 people (as of December 31, 2010) who disagree, but that is less than 3% of those liking/not liking. Enjoy his music and let it lift your soul. Happy New Year to all.
@dukestreetking75 AMEN to your words , there are few out there who can write music that could be printed as poems!! Bruce, Johnny Cash , Kris Kristofferson , not many can rip the feelings out of your chest like Bruce and make you want to smile and dance in the next song!
@dukestreetking75 totally agree... once dated a chick who hated Bruce... she was at my place one night and I had her read the lyrics to Racing in the Streets...needless to say she craped her pants and was blown away by the imagery and honesty of the lyrics...but there are others like Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Neil Young, James Taylor etc just as good to be honest
@dukestreetking75 Yeah, when i was younger that was what my father actually said (non American here). I was one of those guys who believed that "Born in USA" was a simple flag blowjob.
How wrong i was. Springsteen patriotism is exactly like that of millions around the world, a big "fuck you" to governments that screw things behind people`s back.
@Mojolightnin - it's always fun to listen to someone who resorts to bizarre sexual activities, profanity and pure nonsense after having their first beer.
@dukestreetking75 It always amuses me, when someone who knows absolutely nothing about music posts about how some talentless, tone-deaf piece of human debris like bruce fagsteen is "so awesome", reminds me of being in the third grade again, Idiot
In the last verse he sings about being in a chaingang. does that mean the character in the song got arrested? I wonder if this means that the character either killed his wife, or the economic misfortune and divorce turn him towards crime...?
First time I remember hearing The Boss was when I was 4 years old (Glory Days!!!). I have loved this song since I listened to it for the first time when I was 13. He is one of my biggest inspirations!! :) The best part: The Boss is 60 and rockin' every day!!!! And I can't believe he wasn't popular in school (most musicians were not either).... But most importantly he's popular to us, his fans!!!! BRRUUUUUUUCCCE 4EVER!!!
I know it would never happen, but would love to see the Boss re-record the Born in the USA album without the 80's production, it would sound like this...
@rutgers1961 you think 80s production is bad, go back to the second half of the 70s when the record studios used the A track. It sounds like people are singing into a damn metal can.
@sixshooter500 , I agree that the late 70's techniques were poor, but at least they didn't contain that slick 80's big drum sound, and thank goodness Springsteen's synths were muted. Too bad that can't be said of some other artists who tried to "update" their sound and ruined (dated) otherwise good albums.
@rutgers1961 That's not the worst of it for metal fans. Until around 1984 when the first real improvement in sound since the early 70s occured, the music of metal was to complex to be captured in audio effectivly. Motorheads high tauted Ace of Spades has such a dirty sound its hard to listen to at times, and yet if you listen to their new stuff or their live stuff you know they produce clean speed metal, not the dirty sound that is so prevelant on those late 70s early 80s records.
Classic Springsteen. The best song on born in the U.S.A. Those lyrics create a cool little movie in your head as only "THE BOSS" can do and has done so often. Been on that downbound train myself and this song was a balm to my soul. Any one else felt that way? Anybody........? Hello.....................? (the echo floats back softly, the crickets resume their song).

She probably got sick of your political banter and liberal whining ass Bruce. You know this song is autobiographical. It was probably during your rant about how you could rock better without the E Street Band. That was when she said "Enough, I'm packin' my bags!"
@Roggiedodgie No, she left because the narrator lost his job and he had no dough. If that's ever happened to anyone on this board, please raise your hand. Come on dude. This songs speaks to the heart of every American man. Fuck you for trying to politicize this song. This song is a lament to lost love and a sad lonely life of hard work. There is nothing political about it.
Wonder what the boss would say about child abuse reporting (or lack of it in libraries), porn in libraries, and gang use of library computers. Now's the time for patriotism. We're being swamped by garbage in the guise of the 1st amendement.
Could be one of the catchiest riffs in R&R history. The passion Bruce sings with(Studio Version) where he sings "and I fell to my knees and cryed" is unmatched. I never liked Born in USA but take away the "cheese" boards and it is very good.
there is another video posted by' joshuarowe' on the same page as this, with better video quality and the sound is just as good. check it out more clearly.
For some inexplicable reason, Boss biographer Dave Marsh calls this one of his worst songs. This has always been one of my absolute favorites; as haunting and melodic and real as anything he has ever done. Thanks for this great version.
The truth is that there really aren't any weak tracks on "Born in the U.S.A." There's some stuff that borders on cheesy ("Dancing in the Dark"), but all in all it's a fantastic album, just not his best.
Heard this song hundreds of times, but still don't really understand the true meaning of the lyrics. The song is so haunting and mysterious. I think the narrator murderd his girlfriend.
@ManvsMachine7 : why do you believe that there's a murder? I simply believe that the narrator remembers the times when he lived with his girlfriend/wife and he cannot accept that she has left him. He says explicitly that she took a train on the Central line.
Put on my jacket I ran through the woods I ran till I thought my chest would explode There in the clearing, beyond the highway In the moonlight, our wedding house shone I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed The room was dark our bed was empty Then I heard that long whistle whine And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried... fuck man. some of the best lyrics ever.
@hardware72 Exactly. I just sent these same lyrics to a friend of mine, telling him that these were some of the best lyrics, They paint the picture that you can see.
@Bruuutal1 He sings about how how he feels like he's riding a train spiraling down. It's metaphorical for how his life is going down and not up and improving. When he says, "Now don't it feel like you're a rider..." he's saying now don't you feel the same way I feel? The song evokes a response of sorrow and he calls the listener out saying he made you sad like the character in the song.
This song sings the universal pain of the working American. Thank God for Bruce Springsteen and for the first amendment HAPPY BELATED 60th BIRTHDAY BRUCE!
the best end to this song I have heard. Steve just so nails the feel, his tone is spot on, simple but perfect. ;the man played for the song like Bruce sings for it..
er.someone tell me what him being sexy has to do with anything?jeez grow up! hes the boss alright, unsurpassed, ive been listening for 25yrs and never tire of his genius.brilliant song, which apparently he didnt want on the album, according to an interview with s.van zant i heard yrs ago on capital radio
Hey trick1230Y, the guy's a performer. and an old one at that. He could do a lot worse than being called 'Sexy' by a female fan. Wait till you're 60 and still trying to be relevant before passing judgement.
I am a big fan! I loved this song when it came out, the words are haunting and gripping, his facial expressions keep your attention and Bruce adds the Downbound train howl at the end which is fantastic!! Good old Miami Steve does a terrific solo at the end, that distinguishes it from the album version. I also think Bruce is a great band leader/ quarterback/conductor. She just Joe I gotta go
It's funny, the older I get, the sexier "older" Bruce is. I am glad the young folks are diggin it like I have for so long This is one of my fave songs . Have ya seen him and the band do the Clash cover, London Callin? It is powerful.
Whether you're American or not, the Boss is a true MUSICIAN! His music crosses political lines, national lines, religious lines, ethnic lines....it speaks to common themes that touch all people.
I love Bruce, in a homoerotic way, but this is far from his best performance of this song. Still good though, and for the all youtube reactionaries out there, this is not an attack, and no I can't do better.
I do like Raul's version, but Bruce sings it in the most poignant way.....simply a heartbreaking, yet beautiful song that can bring tears to your eyes. It's possibly my fave Bruce song, and way underrated.
I took your advice....wow. That's all I can really say. In his prime, when it was fresh...truly amazing! The United States has had many unique voices....Bruce has to be added to the likes of Twain, Davis, Coltrane, Carlin (and Bill Hicks!), Vonnegut, and a handful of others...
I remember that song...but until you posted this, I never really took the time to appreciate it, considering its lyrical content. With what I'm going through at the moment on a relational level, this song is therapy...thank you.

She probably got sick of your political banter and liberal whining ass Bruce. You know this song is autobiographical. It was probably during your rant about how you could rock better without the E Street Band. That was when she said "Enough, I'm packin' my bags!"
Roggiedodgie 1 year ago
@Roggiedodgie No, she left because the narrator lost his job and he had no dough. If that's ever happened to anyone on this board, please raise your hand. Come on dude. This songs speaks to the heart of every American man. Fuck you for trying to politicize this song. This song is a lament to lost love and a sad lonely life of hard work. There is nothing political about it.

Wonder what the boss would say about child abuse reporting (or lack of it in libraries), porn in libraries, and gang use of library computers. Now's the time for patriotism. We're being swamped by garbage in the guise of the 1st amendement.

what a feeling and passion he puts in this song fenomenal never seen ths before
Sandman164 1 year ago
Could be one of the catchiest riffs in R&R history. The passion Bruce sings with(Studio Version) where he sings "and I fell to my knees and cryed" is unmatched. I never liked Born in USA but take away the "cheese" boards and it is very good.

juanma1 2 years ago
For some inexplicable reason, Boss biographer Dave Marsh calls this one of his worst songs. This has always been one of my absolute favorites; as haunting and melodic and real as anything he has ever done. Thanks for this great version.

@Yokonono99 well I'll never read any of his books then, this song is one of my favorites.

Both of the songs you mentioned are great too.

ManvsMachine7 2 years ago

I just sent these same lyrics to a friend of mine, telling him that these were some of the best lyrics, They paint the picture that you can see.
falcon65drums 1 year ago
@hardware72 Can you explain the last line in the lyrics ?
"Now don't it feel like you're a rider on a downbound train"
Bruuutal1 1 year ago
@Bruuutal1 He sings about how how he feels like he's riding a train spiraling down. It's metaphorical for how his life is going down and not up and improving. When he says, "Now don't it feel like you're a rider..." he's saying now don't you feel the same way I feel? The song evokes a response of sorrow and he calls the listener out saying he made you sad like the character in the song.

er.someone tell me what him being sexy has to do with anything?jeez grow up! hes the boss alright, unsurpassed, ive been listening for 25yrs and never tire of his genius.brilliant song, which apparently he didnt want on the album, according to an interview with s.van zant i heard yrs ago on capital radio
trick1230Y 2 years ago
Hey trick1230Y, the guy's a performer. and an old one at that. He could do a lot worse than being called 'Sexy' by a female fan. Wait till you're 60 and still trying to be relevant before passing judgement.

ive a long wait til im 60 to find out, thanks for the sage like advice though! have a good day¬

Believe it or not, there IS a better version of this song.
Find the Springsteen Tribute cd, and listen to Raul Malos version.
