Incredible song! I was ten years old and I remember this as if it were yesterday! Who cares whether it is a recording redubbed over some footage?? It's Chicago singing and not someone else. Whatever.
You are the ChicagoMan!!!!! Thank you so much for this clip!! I can't believe so many people had no idea who this guy was. My dad was jamming to this and CSN&Y when I was growing up in late 60's & 70's. I still love it. Terry Kath, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton & David Gilmour. Pick anyone and enjoy the ride!!!
Totally agree! I think because Kath had put on some weight and more fashionable attire would have been unflattering. As for Cetera, I believe he just lost his mind.
I like this video, because even though it is nearly 4 decades old, it shows every band member, all the instruments. Love it, saw them Sept 12th 2007 here in Seattle and they really do put on a great concert!!
I hate comments like this he's better then Hendrix bla, bla, bla... Both players were great Hendrix and Kath, they were both friends and they gigged together. Hendrix gave Kath a break by going on a tour with him. They both had great things to say about each other without comparing dick length. So keep the comparing people, faces and places to the school yard.
one of the best concerts i ever saw was chicago on a saturday on july,4, 1975 in the mesker zoo and amphitheatre in evansville indiana. of course, the first song played was "Saturday in the Park"
in December, '69, right after Xmas the band did a full set, with intermission, in the Antwerp Stock Exchange, even though there was no audience. I was there with my Belgian friend, whose father worked there and had told us 'an American band' would be there that night. It was unforgettable to pull up a couple of chairs and sit about 20 feet in front of the band. I guess it lasted about an hour and a half. It was unforgettable.
Their original name-Chigago Transit Authority[what a name] and the association of dawn travel[though not correct]and the music evoked something in me.Going somewhere, wherever.
I like that explanation because i love the group. I believe he may have said this, but it's the first time i've heard that staying up late made the "Spinning room is sinking deep".But i'm sure it could happen.
when he wrote the song, it was in the wee hours of the morning. he couldn't sleep, he was having trouble writing, so he incorporated all this into the song. The time that he wrote the song? 25 or 26 minutes to 4 in the a.m.!
As driving as the guitar is, i find the smooth trasition from lead guitar solo to bass solo(3:14)without missing a beat astutely canny. And another smooth change from bass to horns(3:27).The entire song is so upbeat.
Absolutely! Was showing this vid to someone the other day and he just said it's amazing how someone can write a song like this. Everything seems to fit. The horn section is a pure delight. Trademark of chicago!
Actually, Hendrix always said that Kath was one of his influences. He said on a number of occasions that Kath was actually better than he was. I'm not sure about that, but if Jimi Hendrix gives you that kind of praise, you're deffinitely one of the best ever.
Is it true this song is about drugs? Why else would a guy want to keep staying awake at 3:00 in the morning, and why the hell would the break of day happen at this time? Regardless, a great song, and a great group, but I wonder what the deal with the lyrics are.
I've heard that this song is actually about the writing process and he was up all night trying to come up with something. Then he just decided to write the song about writing the song. If you listen to the lyrics it makes sense.
Great. The title seems to say that the song is live. Anyone know for sure? This is one of the closest sounding songs if it is live, to that of the studio release.
It's strange. On snowboard and skimboard films when you hear some music and don't care how old it is. This song of Chicago is grand and also is soundtrack from the snowboard film Follow me Around. In the movie it sounds so alive and modern tha can't belive .... Listen to "Shocking Blue - Send me a postcard" - great and old song, that hasn't lost it's charming. Cheers, Ico
Found a nice reel to reel tape of Chicago VIII at the thrift store...Cool cardinal on the cover and granny apple green Chicago patch! Is this album worth listening to or should i go back to my nonstop video installation of ELECTRA-GLIDE IN BLUE?
I agree. Kath was the heart and soul of the group. They were almost a cover group of themselves after Kath died. They should have quit, or at least stopped calling themselves Chicago. I still miss Terry Kath. He is one of the greatest rock musicians of the '60s and '70s. Ask anyone who really understands rock music and they will tell you its true.
i've been continually rewatching electra-glide in blue since it's premiere in '74 and after 33+ years of watching this photoplay nonstop i've got to say: why did the director let Cetera get his 'feather me pretty' hair so dirty while riding those motorbikes? Anything Cetera and the boys did onstage musically dwarfs in comparison to their performances in this film. 'Nuff said
I bought the DVD of 'Electra Glide' for one simple reason, it had Kath, Loughnane, Parazaider and Cetera in it. The main goal, as you may guess, was to see Cetera's small role. I think you're going out on a limb here saying that, "Anything Cetera and the boys did onstage musically dwarfs in comparision to their performances in this film. I enjoyed it for the sole purpose of the cameos by the Chi-boys.
As for Guerico's modivation in making Cetera the "dirty lil' white boy," well, all I can think of, is that it was for the role. It got him into the mindset of the character he was playing. It was a very convincing look, complete with the dirty, shaggy blonde hair and beard. Heck, he even appeared sleep deprived, which wouldn't have been out of the question, knowing the hectic schedule Guercio had them under.
What are you, fucked up? Chicago is a great band, and Peter Cetera is a great vocalist. Try saying that to a bigger Chicago fan than me. You won't have a smile on your face after he/she beats you up for that dumb ass comment.
is there any vid's from the PBS program "stoundstage" that was recorded live in chicago? i remember watching that series all the time-coulda swore they taped an apperance!
Terry Kath is a fucking fantastic guitarist...he should have been up there with Hendrix, Clapton, all the 60's greats. Yet all most people know Chicago for is "You're the Inspiration". Goddamn Peter Cetera.
It's a mystery why Kath never got his due. He is all but forgotten, except for the diehard 40 year fans.. Yes, he was one of the all time greats and was the soul of Chicago 67-78.
when people think of Chicago, they always talk of the horn section but never mention Terry's wicked playing. I think that suck. Terry,Trower,Farner and Winters were the baddest dudes after Hendrix, Page , Clapton and Beck did they stuff. Terry kick ass even if he's not with us today !!!
I can't stop watching this great footage. have to watch it almost everyday a few times and feeling the atmosphere and the groove again being in that audience that night in 1969. So glad I'm 'old'! These memories of the 60's are the best!
yeah, being 16 really sucks cuz I will never go to a concert of the bands that I love. Except backstage at the Grass Roots concert where i got to hang out with the band (my uncle's the drummer). That was awesome.
This is awesome. I was there! 20 years old. Almost 40 years ago! You can watch the signs of "Muziek Express' on the wall, the mamagazine I wrote you about ChicagoKid. Paul Acket was Head editor and the one who got all the GREAT bands to Holland those years. This is sooo cool, seeing those footage again.
MVP of early Chicago? Robert Lamm. He wrote nearly all the songs and was a real musician's musician, as well as the best overall singer in the band. I agree with straitali that Kath was the soul man who helped keep the band raw in the early days, and that his loss marked the end of the CTA Chicago. For me, the only must-have albums are I, II, III, and Live at Carnegie Hall. The next few albums are hit and miss.
I think it has to do with anyone who has a greater sensitivity to things in general. The more sensitive people have a more difficult time in the wordaday world, in this brutish world. Sometimes they don't live long.
Terry Kath was the soul of the original band. They never fully recovered from the loss of their "soul man" who, if he had lived, would never have allowed the band to lose their edge.
Kath, hands down. Cetera is a great singer, but Kath is a greater guitar player, and would be far harder to replace (as evidenced after his unfortunate death).
Thank you! It's great to have the opportunity to watch
this.....anyone should know this is the studio audio, we've heard it for 30 years. I've made videos from the audience, w/ lots of noise. Only the greatful dead would let you plug into the board! Thanks for sharing....
I know you never mentioned that it was "live" but for some reason it kind of led us to believe that it was. Sorry we got you upset and misinterpreted your wording, nontheless thank you for this footage.
It is a nice reminder, though, of what value there is in their landmark studio recording of this tune. It's one of the cleanest recordings where every role (lead vocal, harmonies, horns, drums, guitar solo, rhythm guitar, subtle keyboards) comes through clearly given the time of recording (around 1971-72).
Danny stated that he used two drumsets in this recording. Not at the same time of course but over dubbed the second set over the first. You know what I mean.
We appreciate all you've done. I love watching all these old performances. I especially love to watch Robert Lamm sing. I would love to see all songs played at Chicago's 1975 NYRE in tuxedos. HELP !!
Thanks for this ChicagoKid. CTA was one of the first albums I bought. I still have the vinyl in my attic. I guess the clip is the actual performance with the studio audio superimposed. They were great and as much as Blood, Sweat, and Tears they exemplififed the rock/jazz fusion movement of the late 1960s.
Hi! I can see you're a very big fan of Chicago. My father-in-law is a big fan too and he's trying to find videos of Chicago from 1960's to 1970's but we can't. May I know where did you get all these videos that you posted or probably a suggestion where we can acquire one? Thank you very much. You're response will very much be appreciated.
I've thought that the same thing...either he's somehow connected to the Chicago camp, or... Maybe it's Lee, he's very computer savvy. Plus, the stuff hasn't been pulled due to one of the many YouTube lawsuits that are pending. Either way, it's a pleasure to see all of this vintage Chicago stuff that I didn't even know existed, that seems to be straight out of their archives. It'd be great to have all of this stuff on DVD.
Incredible song! I was ten years old and I remember this as if it were yesterday! Who cares whether it is a recording redubbed over some footage?? It's Chicago singing and not someone else. Whatever.

If you judge Chicago by when Terry Kath was
alive, they are on of the best bands of all-time. He made Cetera and Lamm better, their
sound is incredibly tight, versatile and
gritty when he's in the lineup. After that,
it's pretty spotty, some good stuff, but...

Driving, lively song. My favorite song by Chicago, by far. I played this in a school band, 1973.
