If he was in the midst of serious voice changing, and it sounds like he was, they pitched it right at the typical voice cracking notes. That's probably why he was nervous and out of tune. Still, a great song and they captured the simple spirit of it, unusual for the 70s (more common would be Cher warbling O Holy Night).
