im very new to the amiga scene but some of these games look great and id love to play some and maybe get an amiga for myself, can anyone point me to a good amiga to start with and what to read up about? thanks
I would recommend getting an emulator instead, like winUAE. The only thing this will prevent you from is using special hardware like the very view 3d accelerators supported by amiga, but there were hardly any games for them anyway.
Games are easy to find on abandonware sites. It can be a little tricky to find rom images for the Amiga OS, but there are a few game collections you can buy for very cheap that come with the rom files and one even comes with an amigastyle usb joystick.
AB3D was THE best 3D texture mapped Amiga shooter :), followed by Genetic Species, and then lastly Gloom Deluxe.
Other great ones were Testament, Trapped & Breathless, but what i found great about Breathless was although it was not quite in the same league as AB3D or Genetic Species, it has EXCELLENT in-game music which helped lift the atmosphere where it was lacking elsewhere.
Amiga 1200´s speed was quite similar to the pc´s back then, it run quite smootly like in the video. It had an own fast graphic processor which pc´s didn´t have.
Yes the game did suffer from slowdown occasionaly when levels opened up into large environments or too many on screen baddies at once. There was a sequel made called Alien Breed 3D the killing grounds which was supposedly PC only.I dont think it was ever released.I completed Alien Breed 3D and absolutely enjoyed it.Definately one of the Amigas finest shooters and running on AGA 1200 at only 14MHz.Yep! AMIGA realy rocked!!.
So the game was released after all! I had no Idea!.What i dont understand is why Team 17 have not updated and re-released any of the Alien Breed games to the PC.They did claim at the time that Alien Breed was staying exclusive to Amiga but i think it is about time now that they considered updating and re-releasing these brilliant games for the console systems at least.I think that they would sell very well.
Had both AD3D 1 and 2...and still do :p AB3D2 runs a bit slow on my A1200 030/50. AB3D1 Was actually a lot of fun from what i remember. As was Gloom/Genetic Species.
I remember running Doom I on my A1200 with Blizzard IV 030/50Mhz accelerator. I had 16MB memory and 120MB HD. The game worked like a charm. I would compare it to 386/40mhz Dx2 but it run slightly faster on my A1200. :) Full schreen sharpest gfx had to be disabled though.
i remember getting this for the cd32 and it ran like crap.
then(back in the day when they sold amiga games in the games shops) i saw it for 4.99 on the amiga 1200 so i took it home and holding my breath pressed the forward key and to my delight it ran like a dream with no slowdown just a shame they didnt release a update of the game like gloom deluxe.
It is difficult to see in the Video, but it had the prettiest water effects ever seen in an raycasting engine like that, even simulating refraction effects.
Anyone remember the demo? It has a much larger view and ran a lot better. (I had a stock A1200) I never figured out what happened between the demo and the disappointing final release.
AB3D was in my opinion the BEST game of this type on the Amiga. Breathless was pretty good too, Gloom was fun in 2 player & Fears was just plain crap.
I have both games breed 3d 1+2 shame they got manual based copy protection and guess what- I lost the manuals!I have same spec as U FLATLINE 030 50mhz
I remember reading the reviews and it was impressive how the programmer made game like this running in A1200 without acelerator. Team 17!! What a excelent software house!!

Excuse me, but I was watching your videos and I hear a strange and repetitive sound, that stop, and start again. What's that?

@radicalgarbage02 I don't know, but I hate that sound xD. I love the Amiga <3, not the trak-trak-trak-trak-trak sound :(

I just stopped watching it because of it... Sounds like someone typing.

Interesting, this game seems to run pretty well on an Amiga, what is the configuration you were using at the time?
Also, you ran this with keyboard and mouse?
TheDutchGhost 3 years ago
It was made for Amiga. Mostly Amiga 1200 could handle it with 2 megs of memory.
xylex81 3 years ago
No problem with slowdown?
I happen to have bought this game on Ebay but I haven't been able to test it.

Actually the Killing Grounds was released on the Amiga, but I understand that even the most powerful Amigas at the time couldn't run it fully.

Well it wasn't that well received.
Some found it even lacking compared to its predecessor in certain terms.

how did you make it work on mouse an keyboaed? i coul only make it work on one or the other.

one not seen here "classic" game like Trapped II was really advanced as for its times, though was more RPG than shooter. Very nice anyway.
panrolpho 3 years ago
but Trapped II requested at least 30/50MHz accelerator to run, plus for smooth running you needed 60/50MHz accelerator

Alien breed 3D 2 was better because you got it full screen rather than just in a small window.

nice to see it again, but please, can you increase the sound of the game instead of the sound of the joystick...
