this is what they know, nearly all of these whales were born at sea world so i dont see how they will know any different? they wouldnt know how to survive in the ocean.
Well they get bored because there is no stimuli in their tank, nothing for them to do and nowhere for them to go. All orcas are born with the ability to echo-locate, so having no use to use it would bore them, they also are smart enough to be bored easily and they have predatory instincts that would make them bore easily. These are complex, smart animals, nothing a trainer, or visitors could do to completely entertain them.
@14dlns Actually the orcas have 7 different tanks that they are frequently moved around. They also have many playtime sessions each day. These include the use of giant barrels, balls and discs. The whales enjoy pushing the objects around.
@94james94 Just because they're born in captivity doesn't mean that they lack the instincts they have in the wild to hunt, search, swim long distances and play in huge underwater play grounds. Orcas need lots and lots and lots of room as much of their stimulation comes from searching patrolling and hunting in new areas in vast territories of ocean.

Seriously, Trua interacts with everybody. I think its sad....he now looks to human attention in his free time. But anyway what it with people who "pet" them through the glass?? Its not like they can feel that. xD Everybody does that.
Beautiful creature. Just wish that visitors wouldn't be so loud around them. There is thick glass between them, but they hear extremely well. For you, it's two minutes, for them it's a lifetime.
They have good hearing...under water. The glass is extremely thick, at least thick enough that an Orca can't bust through it so they probably aren't hearing much.
Actually, there was this one time one of the dolphins didn't want to eat at all in Sea World, San Diego. Igt wasn't allowed to feed the dolhins, but I kept a cold fresh fish in my cooler. I was petting the dolphin, and since now one was there yet, I kept on comforting it, I stopped, looked around, and I made sure it stood there, then I took out the fishies, and I fed it three. The secuirity gaurd came and took me away to the office all mad. Then they asked me which dolhin I fed,"The Hungry One"
I once played with a penguin :D they play with u cuz they r bored and want to return to the wild!
