  • Understand that the "CONSITUTION" is not supreme law of the universe. It's a great document but you must be absurd to think that it has permanence, if there's a change to make the nation better but it's not defined in the Constitution, who cares? It doesn't make sense.

I love how you compare apples to oranges, and even bring in totalitarianism. Why would anyone in their right mind toss aside speech or the right to a fair trial? No one. This is a democracy.

    So again, I ask you, why stick strictly to the constitution while we can exist as a democracy without one?

    Read it closely. Pay special attention to the part about "common defence", and the next 4 words after that.

  • @letInMe Ron Paul explained it already. General welfare means federal judges, a sound currency, etc - it doesnt mean SPECIFIC welare, which is what you liberals are talking about.

  • @calimar28 Even Fox News(!) showed Ron Paul he was wrong! The Supreme Court ruled Social Security constitutional under the General Welfare Clause in 1937. Ron Paul claimed it was just a liberal ruling. The Constitution made them the final arbiter of what is or isn't constitutional. If he is a 'strict constitutionalist' he should accept their judgement rather than stick his fingers in his ears and scream it's unconstitutional.

Cardozo's majority opinion in Helvering v Davis 1937 clearly shows the superiority of Hamiliton's reading of the general welfare clause "The conception of the spending power advocated by Hamilton and strongly reinforced by Story has prevailed over that of Madison". It would take a massive change for the Supreme Court to overturn that ruling; it is a not flawed separate but equal ruling. Your other option amend the constitution-unlikely

I can't believe this guy just rips on fox news in almost all of his episodes but never sais anything at all about msnbc at all. He calls out all these conservatives and smears them but never has anything bad at all to say about liberal media.   • While I enjoy The Young Turks videos I am very very curious as to why they named themselves after a group who sided with the central powers in WWI. They also slaughtered hundreds of thousands if not millions of Christian Armenians in Turkey in a disgusting Religious and politically motivated genocide. I sincerely hope this is just a coincidence. Does anyone know? Please reply.

  • uh no...healthcare here in canada is universal. You may get denied from certain coverage extras...but you get basic encompassing healthcare no matter what.

    I know which health care I'd rather have and it's not the American rich man's healthcare system.

    You said Bush sr. was against pre-emptive strikes. In fact, he was against AMERICA doing them strikes, but he wasn't against other countries doing pre-emptive strikes FOR America (like Iraq did against Kuwait).

    Saddam attacked Kuwait because they were flooding the market with cheap oil at the time,

    and of course Bush sr. isn't going to like that, so April Glasspie of Sec. State said "We have no opinion of your fight" or something similar.

  • makes a perfect point at 5 minutes in! capitalism is by far the best way to ensure that a nation prospers, but the types of people who make executive decisions for corporations lack the morality to do what´s best for others (for example that Ian guy, or also companies who cut corners on environmentally sound practices, or also the huge bank errors that led to the economic depression). capitalism has got to be kept in check at times.

  • This is one problem with Capitalism. Obviously true Socialism also has problems. The masses need something in between the two, limiting both profits, but also limiting social benefits. Something like guaranteeing people the very basics for survival [simple food, shelter], banning foreign imports to bring back manufacturing jobs, and a tax rate that increases exponentially instead of linearly.

  • Totally agree - the blame needs to go squarely on insurance companies and corrupt amoral politicians. They put money before people. The Citizens in polls are overwhelmingly for the public option when they are made aware of what it actually consists of. If ever there was a case of strike back it would be for the US Voters on corrupt politicians - including Obama if he doesn't begin to lift more than a finger to show he's serious about the public option.

  • Why would you make such a generalized comment like that? Obviously, not every American is money-hungry nor are they cold-hearted. Even in Canada (where I live) there exist people, political groups, and obviously insurance companies who would love to privatize our health-care system. It's the fact that they've, and I use this term loosely, allowed their goverment and insurance companies get away with murder.

  • Insurance is fucking stupid (at least car insurance), I had a 01 civic that was in mint condition and I payed 735 dollars a year in insurance. Someone did a hit and run on me and my insurance company payed me 5000 dollars and kept the car. Over nine years, I've payed 6600 dollars in insurance and would have continued to pay it if the car hadn't been destroyed. If I put that money in the bank instead and only payed my self five grand, I would still have the car, the interest and 1600 dollars...

    As for your Lamborghini scenario, I could have just had liability and that would have covered it (at 80 dollars a year). This was implied in my comment as it is the law to have car insurance. And again, your position that people would be ruined if they didn't have car insurance; liability would suffice for everyone. If losing a car ruins you, then you couldn't afford it anyway (I speak of the average owner, not Mr Laborghini).
