Both of them have dark circles around their eyes. To me it helps with the scene, the point of the scene, especially on the Doctor's side. Then again it was filmed somewhere between 9pm and 5am.
I don't understand what the Doctor is so afraid of. He's not dealing with anything different from what any human being has to deal with. Bottom line is, with any couple that grows old together, one partner is going to outlive the other. That's just the way it is. The question is not "if" but "for how long?"

It's not that he's going to have a relationship with Rose and they're going to grow old together, he's going to live long after her, but he'll have to watch her grow old and die while he remains roughly as he is now. Time Lords age differently.

Sod that, Doctor/Master all the way baby! Their love is so timelordy so there's the added bonus of mind!sexxing! Although it's also very angry so there's the drawback of possible murder and other unpleasant shenanigens :D
omg! he looks like he's gonna cry. this scene makes me tear up. i hate it that they couldn't be together. they should have made Rose mutate into a time lord and then she can regenerate. that'd be awesome!
While the separation of Rose and the Doctor was tragic, I feel that if the writers were to attempt to "mutate" Rose... it would cheapen her somehow... and the series. And while she can never regenerate, it adds to the tragedy of the Doctor and who he is. He is alone. It's sad, but that's how it is.
Maybe, if he's lucky, he'll find more Time Lords hiding under Chameleon Arches somewhere.
Also, part of the reason the Doctor loves Rose so much is her humanity and her compassion. If she becomes an all-knowing, all-seeing Time Lady, she'd lose that.
poor baby doctor looked fit to cry. why she have to make him suffer? she can defeat the daleks but she can't figure out something so huge as the doctor actually loving her? sheesh. she needs to just shut-up and take him in her arms and hold him. tight. before i jump in...lol
