  • A great song about Bono's Africa work and beliefs. But it can be misinterpreted as a love song too!

  • because because because we can, we must!!

  • Oh my god, I am such a baby! I tear up every time I play this song! How do they keep doing this to me?

  • For all of you people out tree who like the other version better, just think of it this way: it's the same song, but in a different dimension. In the first version he was talking about lobe in a 3rd person perspective. In this one he's talking to love in a first person perspective. It's not a bad version at all. And the guitar solo is always a + :)

  • es war ein so geiles Konzert - trotz Regen... U2 rocks!!!

  • I Love this song..

.....because because because we can we must, my heart is your home, we were meant for each other you and I, your not sorry, I'm not gonna cry, because because because we can we must, we're a perfect match you and I, because because because we can we must... I Love you Bono, I love U2

  • I Love this song

    I Love you Bono, I love U2

  • I love it ! Mercy at that time was still processing, the so called old version was a demo n now it seems as they played around with it n got new lyrics.. Either way it sounds awesome n it's deff one of those U2 songs u hear n know it's a U2 hit !

  • they took out the great "rippin the stitches part"

  • the demo is many times betteeeer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @emiliogco08 I kinda like the other chorus

  • You guys realize that the "original" was just a demo? It was never a final version. It was probably going to be changed anyway.

  • New lyrics are great! Bono, keep them!!! Or maybe improve even more :)

  • Amazing !

  • Firstly, I prefer this version exponentially to the older version, Secondly would be cool if you could check out my instrumental version created using Logic 9 which is on my channel, cheers

  • great song, but please keep the original lyrics, please... the original lyrics is way better.

  • Go back to the original version. If it ain't broke, don't fix it 'Bono Dublin 1990'

  • Listen to this version of Mercy on UKGSTSEVA

Check out other parts of my film which have U2 songs

  • the lyrics are different but its still a beautiful song

  • we're perfect match you and I???? WTF!!!! Bono is getting out of ideas.

  • they have got to drop the new chorus! It's genuinely awful compared to the original. Too many words, too many syllabals. The low profile "I was ripping the stiches" chorus bit was much more interesting and added a nice layer to the song before the "love ...hears when i lie....." main chorus punch. The "you wanna kill me and i wanna die" just doesn't cut it, and the "because because because" shit reminds me of something annoying that the killers or kings of leon would do.

  • This version is absolutely terrible. Totally ruined what was a great song. There was nothing wrong with the version floating around on here. Why the hell did they take out:

"I was rippin' the stitches, you got two hands to rub..."

The chorus is just rubbish....."Because, because"????

  • I like the piano in the new version but the old lyrics are better.

  • @Narutonami AHO!!!!!!!!!

  • What's the sense in asking for the original to be put on Songs of Ascent? They're not playing this version for a laugh, they're playing it because they consider it better than the original and therefore it will be on the new album.

  • It sounds like the U2 of the 80's... Thank god for that.

  • Es war ein abspritzer!

  • Where is the lower part right before the chorus?

Because, because sounds like a commercial!

  • Where is the lower part right before the chorus?

  • i love it,

  • the old version was perfect, there was no need to "improve" it.. look what happened..

the fans surely don't mind that the old version lasted 6 minutes, there was probably pressure from Universal to change the song and cut off crutial parts of its soul..

  • I agree with the last comments - I wish they would use the original lyrics and I hope we see the original on the next album.

  • Wouldn't it be great if they could sneak 'who's gonna ride youe wild horses' into this new tour? Now that would be awesome?

  • This is what i love about U2 gigs.......They will always throw in a suprise now and again.. They are always aware that the fans are following their gigs on you tube.

  • I am from Romania and I whas there i the sector K2. Thanks for a wonderful concert .

  • @oldwalruscow dude go away

  • k u n tea

  • Thankyou-thankyou-THANKYOU for uploading this!

I loved ths song since the very first time I heard it in 2005 (or was it 2004?). Can't believe they really started to play it during the only one show I attended to this year.

BTW, me too I appreciate much more the lyrics of the studio version lyrics, but the truth is that I'm happy just the same: what really does matter is that the band is working on this track again...and again!

  • I was there and love it :-))))

  • Die Qualität ist der Hammer!!!

  • A better opening, but the original chorus and some of the lyrics are badly missed:

    We're binary code/a one and a zero/you wanted violins/and you got Nero

Love is the end of history/The enemy of misery/Love has come again/I am gone again

Love is justice, not charity/Love brings with it a clarity/Love has come again

U2 have done well to make the song shorter, but have got rid of the wrong parts. And PLEASE get rid of that 'because because because' part - it's awful and ruins the song.

  • @U2Cymru

You are right about because because... it has to fill in words that bono can't remember and the song turns out a bit wrong.

Another line that is delete is 'with your telefscope, i can see further' because because... right

Anyway, it's a long song and if you haven't played in such a long period memoy on lyrics just fails, even for Bono.

  • Best U2 song of last 10 years, 4me!!!

  • His voice is really good here.

  • I see the reason why it did not make it in the past albums. It´s nice but it does not have "that special touch". Also, the chorus is almost exactly as the chorus in "Kite", only a little faster.

  • You know, I want to like this song, but it doesn't do much for me. It still sounds like an unfinished b-side to me.

  • @fortitude78 Not everyone has to like it. Thanks for not liking it and then bashing it.

  • @drvertigo @drvertigo what a childish response. As far as the new songs U2 are toying with on the 360 tour go, I am very fond of Stingray Guitar and Every Breaking Wave - their latest version of North Star is even showing some promise. But, Mercy just doesn't quite work... yet. I'm sure it will be good by the time they put it on their new EP. That said, I think a rather unhealthy fanaticism has developed around Mercy over the years.

  • @fortitude78 ??? Why is that childish? I was praising you. Most people will say that they don't like the song and then bash the song and U2 by saying they need to retire...

I personally love this song. There is a feeling that is captured in the song that just speaks to a lot of people, myself included. The fact that a B-side for six years has captured so many peoples imaginations says a lot about the song.

  • @fortitude78 as much as I love this song, you're right about the unhealthy fanaticism for this one...

its a great song but it's nowhere near a classic like Bad or Streets...

  • I was there. They are on top of their game right now. Even though the audience wasn´t as much into it as I hoped for, they still blew me away. The passion, energy and Emotion they put into their Music is just undiscribeable. When they kicked into I will follow, I knew what was going on. When you´re there, you always have the feeling they are playing just for you, and no other band has that. Love U2 forever <3 !

  • Wow!!! Mercy already is one of my all-time U2 favourites!!!

  • I was there in the sector B1 and just couldn't stop jumping during this song, 'coz I heard it for the first time. And now a still can't stop to listening to.

    What an amazing band ...

  • This song is getting better every time, they enjoy it, this is U2 at it's best for me. Thanks for a wonderful concert .

  • Love it - I liked the lyrics better from last weeks concert thou..

  • @U2006com.....How much money have you guy's spent following the band on this tour?whooosh..

  • When EDGE fires up that guitar of his.......You know it's going to be good..

  • Another classic me thinks!

  • Beautful amsolute beautiful..Love this song,

  • Okay, I keep playing this over and over and over, 'cause I love it....but, I have to agree with johnnygossamer (see below comments) the 2004 lyrics are more betta, and uplifting and more inspirational....keep those lyrcis. THEN, take the hook of "you wanna kill me, I wanna die" in this version - and turn it into another alternative version of the song. MERCY and MERCY, MERCY. ha! love the internet!!!

  • Seeing the evolution of this song is amazing... though I do miss many of original lyrics, especially the entire ending on the demo that starts from Love is the end of history, The enemy of misery, love is justice, not charity etc.

  • This song get's better every time I hear it! I'm glad some to the lyrics have been cut from the original, which I always thought was a great song but just rambled on too long!!

  • New song?

  • ... and use the 2004 lyrics for Mercy, trim it if you have to and keep the rockier drums/guitar and shorten it a bit if you're looking to make a hit out of it, but seriously someone in U2's camp has got to convince Bono that the original lyrics were some of the best he's ever written!!!

  • I honestly think the new additions to this song are kind of cool but feel randomly smooshed into the original lyrics, they should just have two separate songs, use the lyrical hook of 'You wanna kill me/and I wanna die.." in a different song.

  • The original version is 10 times better then this...they should just stick to the original, it's one of the most epic songs I've ever heard....just leave it alone...

  • "happiness is for... those who don't really need it"

  • Wow! Such an improvement<3 look at Bono enjoying the moment. This is u2 at it's best for me.

  • GREAT!!! Much better than demo... this is an instant clasic

  • OMFG I WAZ THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The song is getting better.. but I do miss the original lyrics and especially the ending...I hope they play this in Denver.

  • Yes, this version is waaaaaaaay better that last weeks. YES, this song is big and bold and will be a hit single!!! love it!

  • Schade, dass die Studioaufnahmen nie das Niveau erreichen, wie´s live rüberkommt...Toller Song!!! Aber auf Platte in der Form wohl nie zu haben...

  • We want this song in Paris ..

  • Wow it's a fucking great great song...I LOVE it!!

  • The HTDAAB demo version of "Mercy" from 2004 was and will always be a MASTERPIECE; one of U2's greatest moments ever.

This new live version is CRAP.

  • That;s why most band don't play uncompleted songs. People forget they are still demo's

  • Comment removed

  • isn't it odd that the revised lyrics are the ones that sound incomplete. I like the original lyrics better but it's still amazing to hear this song live

  • Bring back the original lyrics as they are original!!

  • Oh God, I totally love this song ... almost died, when they started playin it yesterday!!

  • I LOVE this song, "everything" about it....I really love 'because, because, because we can, we must'...it's wholeness, totality, complete oneness, brings two people into one, shows so much love, two people in love togather going togather on the same way and knowing it and loving it..... I love it.....very much

  • This version is the theatrical version of Blade runner while the HTDAAB outtake is Ridley Scott's definitive final cut. That's the best analogy for what I'm hearing in the changes

  • @TheClawgrabber I agree. U2 usually have great judgement but they're really thrown out the baby with the bath water here. They need the pre-chorus back, they especially need the 1st line of the original chorus- "love.. hears.. when I lie", not for the lyrics but for the vocal melody and timing. The separation of the words completely makes that chorus soar. The new one is just too over syllabic. It seems like they've lived too long with it and don't realise that they already nailed it.

  • sounds to me like ''...because we can't we wont''

  • please put back the lyrics.. Im ripping the stitches .. we've got to hands to rub.. i'm digging the ditches.. for someone else's luck.. please u2!! it doesnt feel the same anymore

  • @adolfhuffer

It felt for me also strange, but just listen to it a few times, you get used to it

    Atleast I did :)

  • You people are smoking some strong stuff, this version is leaps and bounds better than last weeks! It's getting there, give it time. This, even with the changes, is one inspiring damn song. It will be big.

  • @joshuabporter couldn't agree more

  • @joshuabporter Thanks for saying that, you sum it up very well, I agree.

  • i love this song in all incarnations, but its really a shame bono scraped out some of the best lyrics he's written in 10 years.

All that aside though, i can live with the changes, save one major thing -- transitioning from "its facinating / i know i'll never be alone" DIRECTLY into "you wanna kill me and I wanna die" just seems like such a massive tonal jump and it sort of blows the song out for a moment right when it should be connecting.

Only saying this because because because i can, i must

  • this is pretty good, but I miss the (several) parts from the original version they've cut out. I don't get the same warm fuzzy feeling from this version. Still a great song, but this plane doesn't quite leave the runway

  • I • love • love • love • this song and performance!

Though I still prefer the original version :)

  • Love, love love this song!!! :)))

  • I love this song.....

....were a perfect match you and I, no where else to, no one else to trust, your not sorry, I won't cry, it's just us....because, because, because we can we must.......

    I Love you Bono

    love U2

  • Great song, but I prefer original version.

  • One final thing... with all the lyrical changes, I'm not so sure "Mercy" is the best name for this song anymore. The theme's changed too much. Who knows? Maybe they've renamed it too...

  • @apoed I completely agree. I was just thinking this the other day. The original lyrics definitely fit the title.. But this doesn't seem to have as much to do with "mercy" anymore.. You're spot on. I miss the old lyrics, personally. Sigh..

  • I do think the Edge is an incredible guitarist typically, but this solo is SO blah. The bridge was about 1000% better in the original version of this song that circulated throughout the net... I'm kinda missing it here. Oh well... ithe song will probably change some more before it's actually released. Hopefully, anyway...

  • gotta say the new version is falling on me. I also like this on better than the first time they played it.

  • awesome view

  • It's an immense improvement over Zürich #2, though it's a shame that Bono has removed some of the lyrics, most of which was much better than what he replaced them with.

That said, it appears obvious that this is one of the least rehersed song performances U2 has ever made; there's lots left to do, but it could really work out well if you put some work into the solo, lyrics, and end of the refrain ("because, because, because we can – we must!") that's just shit.

  • @Carlibengarli

I so agree. Your last line is well said. That whole "Because" stuff is crap on a stick. What happened to "Love brings with it clarity"? I love hearing it live though, and it is exciting to see it evolve. At least we have that unreleased other version.

  • @Carlibengarli well your comment is kinda shitty. Don't shit on Edge's solo and dont tell him how to write a solo. He plays it this way every night for a reason. Bono also put alot of work into his lyrics as he always does. Dont shit on his poetry! Have respect for their art.

  • @Franckdatankpart2

I'm not shitting on it, nor am I telling him how to write it; I'm saying what I think of it, and the way he chose to write it. I have astounding respect for their art, my good sir.

  • @Carlibengarli I agree completely the old verison is better , i hope that on songs of ascent he uses the original lyrics

  • @Carlibengarli

    To elaborate:

All original verse lyrics need to return, the bridge (I'm ripping the stitches...) needs to return, the "Because, because, because we can, we must part has to go; the new chorus is fine otherwise but it should end with "I'll be gone again. Again...". The new solo is also a great addition but the song should end with "I am alive, baby i'm born again and again..." with an outro chorus repetition.

That'd be sweet to me. <3
