If Ashe had taken the shards from the Sun-Cryst, she would have become the next Dynast-King, destroyed the Empire, and proceeded to unite Ivalice under her own banner, following the Occuria's desires by unifying the world. The Empire you see in games so often, with it's Emperor holding a great power through which they control the world? Ashe stood at the fulcrum point where that option was a possibility. Ashe very well could have become the very villain you see so often in Final Fantasy Games.
Does Ashe Love Vann or something she kept on looking at him and vann looking at Ashe like they where looking at each other for the answer do they end up being together or what? cause i think they would make a good couple!!
@IsaacTeranIceSage true, there are some people i know who didn't like it because they took away the romance and made it more political, but people should know that it is still awsome
@Idunhavanamez Ha, I had forgotten that airships had been destroyed before Final Fantasy Tactics. That would make it happen after this. It makes you think that perhaps the Occurria were right to stress the importance of weaving the threads of history so tightly...
This scene is one of the most moving in the whole game. The plot is beautiful, (not some lame love story) with Ashe's complex moral dilemma. I love how all the character's lives tie to together, and the dialogue is fantastic. This is a seriously underrated game.
Ya know, Final Fantasy XII has what must be some of the *best* voice acting in any video game...but it irritates me how sometimes the subtitles are way, way off on what they're actually saying.
Oh god, this is so epic. The writing and voice acting and Ashe's moral dilemma, between revenge and what is best for her country, and the way they use Vaan as a symbol of all the Dalmascan people in that scene, oh it's all so epic! This game is incredible!
If you have Basch in party when fighting Gabranth it will be a very cool dialogue between those two in the middle of battle. Its not in this cuts of yours :P
Like in Vagrant Story, the past has an importance considerable in the game. Every characters move foreward without forget their past and so does Ashe, craving absolute power in a fading illusion of the past.
Beyond all these considerations, I think that maybe the occurias, with some divined powers, try to manipulate Ashe with Rasler's image. Maybe it's more an adorned representation than strange phenomenons, see that as you want. ^^
The murder of Reks and the plot written by Vayne in purpose to make Basch a traitor isn't so unimportant that you say, you know ... Of course that Gabranth didn't forget what he did, Reks wasn't common loss in the war but the pawn that changed the very outcome of these conflicts.
You know something kinda sad? He (Michael E. Rogers) didn't even voice Gabranth in the Dissidia games; Basch's VA (Keith Ferguson, also a professional voice impressionist) did.
This is what I got from the Ashe looking at Vaan thing: Gabranth is talking about how Ashe has to destroy the empire in order to avenge all of those people who died. But when Ashe looked at Vaan, she saw that her duty wasn't to avenge the dead. She looked at Vaan then as a Dalmascan, and realized that it was her duty to protect her people by destroying the nethicite. I think at that moment she thought, "How can I let the desire for power consume me, when I have all these people counting on me?"
I truly agree with this; I mean, we already know she wasn't into Vaan like that; but it made sense for her to look at him. They both were in the same boat, in terms of revenge.
@jackiemontembeault That's a good interpretation but I thought of a simpler one: she saw Vaan about to take revenge for his dead brother, and in that moment she saw herself in Vaan and realized revenge would get her nowhere.
The moment Ashe looked at Vaan after the latter picked up a sword with the intention to take revenge on Gabranth, i think they saw themselves in each other. She decided then that revenge was not the way, and that thought probably communicated itself to Vaan, and that's why he calmed down soon enough, and realised that "that won't change anything. My brother's gone".
It's interesting how replays really teach you things you overlooked/didn't get.
Regarding that... she says it with a slight and comforted smile on her face and her voice is by no means commandeering. It was meant as a playful gesture, to show that she had started to accept them. At least that's how I viewed it.
you have a good point there... but after watching it in a different point of view (I need info for a paper which is why I'm watching these cutscenes), I see that Ashe wants to think this thing through for herself. What Vaan said was kinda like a suggestion and would bias Ashe's decision between using nethecite and destroying the sun-cryst.
Besides, Ashe is kinda under pressure, but I think she said that as politely as any person could under that kinda of duress...
Pretty much, from the way that I'm interpreting this, is that Gabranth hated Basch for fleeing to Dalmasca when Archadia invaded Landis (their homeland). Then, Gabranth went with Archades with his sick mother, and when she passed away he took up her name and rose through the ranks and became Judge Magister.
I think that it was Gabranth's heart talking when he asked Ashe to use the stone to destroy the Empire. It makes sense. He's neutral since he's siding with the Emperor and Larsa, not Vayne.
but it didn't start out like that... Gabranth got separated from Basch. Their circumstances were a lot different. Both were chivalrous, but Basch learned to forgive (well, at least the "revenge isn't everything" concept) while Gabranth lingered with his hatred until he got caught up in his own revenge that he found himself as part of the empire he hated.
(1) If your brother "let you down" and you wanted to ruin his life, what would you do? Gabranth joined the Empire as a way to get back at his brother. He looked up to Basch but never truly understood that sometimes, you have to lose in order to win.
(2) Vaan continued to see Reks because that was who he looked up to; he looked to Reks for strength just like Ashe saw Rasler as her strength. Vaan would have done just about anything to get his brother back.
Gabranth stayed with his home country to look after his sick mother, when it became part of of the empire he enlisted again. You know that's his living. I don't think it was directly a way oof getting back at Basch, Basch fled their homeland when it fell, I think Gabranth joined the Arcadian military before Basch joined Dalmasca's. But Basch is his berserkbutton to be sure.
Silverbackman, wtf! Why are you bringing a political argument to a Final Fantasy video? Don't be stupid. There are thousands of videos on youtube about the matter you are discussing. Or even better, go to a forum.
It's fair enough you talking about this scene being a paraell to real life, but the rest is just totally irelevant.
It's not my fault you don't appreciate the ascension from this game into something more meaningful........just pointing out how we can learn from video game art as any other art medium. And what's wrong with posting intellectual comments on the meaning of this video......it's relevant to the video at least. Understand the analysis of others.......don't discourage it.
-"I think there are many parallels here to real life. War and even criminal justice itself are forms of revenge that really can't change the past or the present. So what's the point?"-
That's all you needed to say. Like I said, if you crave "intellectual comments" then go to a forum where people will take you seriously. I am sick of hearing people whinge about the Iraq war on Youtube like its a suitable place for the topic. It just encourages bigotry and flaming of videos.
I think Silverbackman is well within his right to find parallels within this game to situations in the real world. Its good to enjoy the game for its vivid imagery and colorful ideas, but it seems to me as though we are losing something greater if we do not take to heart the lessons which have been worked into such stories. I would encourage others to enjoy the game for both the gameplaying aspect and the underlying lessons it represents.
Exactly....just because it's a video game doesn't mean it's out of place to discuss the different morals of the story. People do this with movies and books, why not video games?
With that said the creators somewhat based the game off ancient Rome's transformation from a republic to an aggressive empire. George Lucas similarly based his story of those events as well....and many people found paralells from the story to what is happening now in America and the Middle East.
Going after a military base like the Pentagon is one thing, but going after innocent people in the twin towers just because your innocent people died? What would change?
The same goes for criminal "justice", what does locking away a person for 30 years for a robbery going to do? The person needs help to rehabilitate.....not revenge in the form of long imprisonment....only makes them meaner.
I think there are many parallels here to real life. War and even criminal justice itself are forms of revenge that really can't change the past or the present. So what's the point? This is what Bin laden couldn't realize......as he stood in the cities of Lebanon in the 1980s, he should have never made the decision to bomb civilian targets like the Twin Towers.....but he did.
Do you actually beleive that Basch wants to kill Gabranth? Basch doesn't hate Gabranth, he's just hugely dissapointed in him. Basch CERTAINLY doesn't want to kill Gabranth. Think about the whole game and Basch's character, and you still think he wants to murder his brother?
Gabranth does hate Basch, or atleast he thinks hes does. Based on what he says in the Bahamaut, he tried to hide his shame behind the whole issue of Basch abandoning Landis.
There is actually an alternate cutscene with the Gabranth battle...
If you have Basch in your active party when the cutscene triggers, a different cutscene will be shown. It is not all that important, it is just a little extra, nothing more.
This is why Square enix are the best. Games like Dragonquest and FF12 are revolutionising voice acting. They're starting to go outside the box of American voice actors, using British, Italian, German and even Australian.
It appeals to more audiences and gives it authenticity.
Theres a slight part missing from this movie. One of the best parts actually. During battle, Gabranth says "Hear me Basch, do not think that killing the kingslayer shall win you back your honour. When you abandoned home and kin..." ect. and there are a series of replies, which I can't fit into this post. Tis a shame, they're very cool.
Thankyou Kiarboz. I didn't think he was talking to me, apparently he was.
Theres no way Baltheir was a judge Magister, considering he is like 22 now. He says in the past that he was a judge, and I really doubt that there was an 22- year old Judge Magister, as the other five are 38-60.
Baltheir would make a great "Judge" though, as hes a genius.
Is it just me, or does every time a Judge leaves the Empire he becomes a Sky Pirate?

Ok, James Earl Jones for Darth Vader is pretty bloody good, but for a no name actor like Michael Rodgers, what a voice!
This is the best scene in the game, SO CLOSELY followed by the Bahamaut scene where Basch and Gabranth face off a second time.
The best final fantasy quote of all time. "You claim no need of power? What of your broken kingdom's shame? THE DEAD DEMAND JUSTICE!"
The last part gives me goosebumps

"The best final fantasy quote of all time. "You claim no need of power? What of your broken kingdom's shame? THE DEAD DEMAND JUSTICE!"
Quoted for truth. When Ashe drops the shard at Gabranth's feet...a powerful scene indeed.

Well Dante and Vergil from DMC3 try to kill eachother as well lol But i think Gabranth is cooler than Basch. And Vergil is cooler than Dante

Gabranth is freakin' awesome.

isnt it sad that Gabranth and basch are brother yet they want to kill each other
dirtybird2212 4 years ago
Do you actually beleive that Basch wants to kill Gabranth? Basch doesn't hate Gabranth, he's just hugely dissapointed in him. Basch CERTAINLY doesn't want to kill Gabranth. Think about the whole game and Basch's character, and you still think he wants to murder his brother?
Gabranth does hate Basch, or atleast he thinks hes does. Based on what he says in the Bahamaut, he tried to hide his shame behind the whole issue of Basch abandoning Landis.

Man; who else hopes in the english version of Naruto Shipuuden, Vayne's voice actor will be Sasori's? xp
Or Gabranth..either or. I would love the english version FOREVA if they did that. 88DDD
MagicAssasin 4 years ago
They should just get Gabranth to say a lot of words starting with the letter 'D'. He always pronounces them so cool lol

This is the best cutscene... So well done :)

This is my favorite scene of the whole game so far. Whoever did the voice of Gabranth did a great job and he's my favorite character in the game

she sounds like Balthier, "whats done is done"

i love how vaan just keeps on randomly saying reks' name as if people care
although i prefer how penelo spends most of the game with her mouth shut. makes me wonder what the point was in including her in the game...

Haha Gabranth' breathing makes me think of Darth Vader. *inhale ... exhale*

There is actually an alternate cutscene with the Gabranth battle...
If you have Basch in your active party when the cutscene triggers, a different cutscene will be shown. It is not all that important, it is just a little extra, nothing more.
AvaWinters 4 years ago
it's the same in the other gabranth battle too i believe

This is why Square enix are the best. Games like Dragonquest and FF12 are revolutionising voice acting. They're starting to go outside the box of American voice actors, using British, Italian, German and even Australian.
It appeals to more audiences and gives it authenticity.

I love gabranths dub voice!! fits him perfectly
controller72 4 years ago
Theres a slight part missing from this movie. One of the best parts actually. During battle, Gabranth says "Hear me Basch, do not think that killing the kingslayer shall win you back your honour. When you abandoned home and kin..." ect. and there are a series of replies, which I can't fit into this post. Tis a shame, they're very cool.
Lochsabre 5 years ago
Yea, I think there are a couple of other mid-battle scenes where it wouldn't let me pause it, and I couldn't hit the record button in time...

Dont worry, you've done everyone a huge favour by loading these up. I think we can handle a few lines for hours of Non-Japanese footage.

I wasn't a huge Cid fan, but hes better than the ff10 cid and ff9 aswell. The cids in ff history are generally friendly, only a few villian cids.
Nice for another villain cid to pop up.
Lochsabre 5 years ago
if there is a cooler character in any rpg than Gabranth, speak now and ill kick your ass for even considering it.
soldieroffortune23 5 years ago
Gabranth is awsome, but Cid is definetly cooler.
dpoc 5 years ago
Baltheir wasnt a judge magister though/
Lochsabre 5 years ago
Yeah for a while, because Dr Cid was a friend of the all powerful Vayne
dpoc 5 years ago
we will have to agree to disagree/ Gabranth rules
soldieroffortune23 5 years ago
Oh there's definetly no argument, Gabranth is the shit. Dr Cid is just inifinetly better than Gabranth's already infinite coolness.
dpoc 5 years ago
alright alright they are all the shit.
soldieroffortune23 5 years ago
There's a difference between a Judge Magister and a plain Judge. Lochsabre is saying Balthier was a basic Judge.
Kiarboz 5 years ago
Thankyou Kiarboz. I didn't think he was talking to me, apparently he was.
Theres no way Baltheir was a judge Magister, considering he is like 22 now. He says in the past that he was a judge, and I really doubt that there was an 22- year old Judge Magister, as the other five are 38-60.
Baltheir would make a great "Judge" though, as hes a genius.
Lochsabre 5 years ago
It's actually even more extreme than that: Balthier was but 16 when he ran away. Which just makes it even more unlikely he was a Magister.
Kiarboz 4 years ago
Michael Rodgers did the voice of Gabranth. Still, Reddas was a judge?!!
johnnye 5 years ago
geez, all these judges are pooping out of nowhere, first Baltheir, now Reddas
Flameshadow1010 5 years ago
when was Balthier a judge?

Did you play the game? There's this one part where Balthier said he was made a judge once. :)
