The Empire you see in games so often, with it's Emperor holding a great power through which they control the world? Ashe stood at the fulcrum point where that option was a possibility. Ashe very well could have become the very villain you see so often in Final Fantasy Games.

Like in Vagrant Story, the past has an importance considerable in the game. Every characters move foreward without forget their past and so does Ashe, craving absolute power in a fading illusion of the past.

Beyond all these considerations, I think that maybe the occurias, with some divined powers, try to manipulate Ashe with Rasler's image. Maybe it's more an adorned representation than strange phenomenons, see that as you want. ^^

This is what I got from the Ashe looking at Vaan thing: Gabranth is talking about how Ashe has to destroy the empire in order to avenge all of those people who died. But when Ashe looked at Vaan, she saw that her duty wasn't to avenge the dead. She looked at Vaan then as a Dalmascan, and realized that it was her duty to protect her people by destroying the nethicite. I think at that moment she thought, "How can I let the desire for power consume me, when I have all these people counting on me?"

Throughout the game there were periods where the others would jude Ashe. It is realistic, Ashe is a very interesting character.

The moment Ashe looked at Vaan after the latter picked up a sword with the intention to take revenge on Gabranth, i think they saw themselves in each other. She decided then that revenge was not the way, and that thought probably communicated itself to Vaan, and that's why he calmed down soon enough, and realised that "that won't change anything. My brother's gone".

It's interesting how replays really teach you things you overlooked/didn't get.

you have a good point there... but after watching it in a different point of view (I need info for a paper which is why I'm watching these cutscenes), I see that Ashe wants to think this thing through for herself. What Vaan said was kinda like a suggestion and would bias Ashe's decision between using nethecite and destroying the sun-cryst.

Besides, Ashe is kinda under pressure, but I think she said that as politely as any person could under that kinda of duress...

Pretty much, from the way that I'm interpreting this, is that Gabranth hated Basch for fleeing to Dalmasca when Archadia invaded Landis (their homeland). Then, Gabranth went with Archades with his sick mother, and when she passed away he took up her name and rose through the ranks and became Judge Magister.

I think that it was Gabranth's heart talking when he asked Ashe to use the stone to destroy the Empire. It makes sense. He's neutral since he's siding with the Emperor and Larsa, not Vayne.

but it didn't start out like that... Gabranth got separated from Basch. Their circumstances were a lot different. Both were chivalrous, but Basch learned to forgive (well, at least the "revenge isn't everything" concept) while Gabranth lingered with his hatred until he got caught up in his own revenge that he found himself as part of the empire he hated.

It's a messy story, but its there.

(1) If your brother "let you down" and you wanted to ruin his life, what would you do? Gabranth joined the Empire as a way to get back at his brother. He looked up to Basch but never truly understood that sometimes, you have to lose in order to win.

(2) Vaan continued to see Reks because that was who he looked up to; he looked to Reks for strength just like Ashe saw Rasler as her strength. Vaan would have done just about anything to get his brother back.

Gabranth stayed with his home country to look after his sick mother, when it became part of of the empire he enlisted again. You know that's his living. I don't think it was directly a way oof getting back at Basch, Basch fled their homeland when it fell, I think Gabranth joined the Arcadian military before Basch joined Dalmasca's. But Basch is his berserkbutton to be sure.

I think Silverbackman is well within his right to find parallels within this game to situations in the real world. Its good to enjoy the game for its vivid imagery and colorful ideas, but it seems to me as though we are losing something greater if we do not take to heart the lessons which have been worked into such stories. I would encourage others to enjoy the game for both the gameplaying aspect and the underlying lessons it represents.

With that said the creators somewhat based the game off ancient Rome's transformation from a republic to an aggressive empire. George Lucas similarly based his story of those events as well....and many people found paralells from the story to what is happening now in America and the Middle East.

Ok, James Earl Jones for Darth Vader is pretty bloody good, but for a no name actor like Michael Rodgers, what a voice!

This is the best scene in the game, SO CLOSELY followed by the Bahamaut scene where Basch and Gabranth face off a second time.

There is actually an alternate cutscene with the Gabranth battle...

If you have Basch in your active party when the cutscene triggers, a different cutscene will be shown. It is not all that important, it is just a little extra, nothing more.

This is why Square enix are the best. Games like Dragonquest and FF12 are revolutionising voice acting. They're starting to go outside the box of American voice actors, using British, Italian, German and even Australian.

It appeals to more audiences and gives it authenticity.

Theres a slight part missing from this movie. One of the best parts actually. During battle, Gabranth says "Hear me Basch, do not think that killing the kingslayer shall win you back your honour. When you abandoned home and kin..." ect. and there are a series of replies, which I can't fit into this post. Tis a shame, they're very cool.
