I'm one of the biggest Red Wings fans around and no Osgood was not one of the best goalies of all time. Now during the 08 playoffs he was the best goalie on the ice. Bottom line and all that really mattered was when he was in net the Wings had a chance to win. That's all that really matters.

I think its safe to say that I've forgotten more about the NHL than you will ever know. I will agree that the "stats don't lie". Look at Osgoods stats during his time outside of Detroit (when he didn't have Lidstrom playing 30 min a game in front of him) and they are mediocre at best.
Even people in Detroit agree with me. Christ - the architect of your dynasty, Ken Holland, put Osgood on waivers even. How many hall of famers can you say that about?
@dejar44 Look at the teams that Osgood played with outside of the Red Wings organization. St. Louis and the Islanders. Both are teams that have had better days, but have struggled since. When Osgood was placed on these teams, he carried them into the playoffs and both had gone through years of not reaching the postseason. He had little to work with, but he made it work. Just like in Detroit. A struggling franchise, turned dynasty.
Waivers were necessary evil due to his prolonged injury.
Another person from Detroit who agrees with me is STEVE YZERMAN. When Yzerman was GM for Team Canada during the 2010 Winter Olympics, he invited several goalies (in July of 2009) to the orientation camp. These included Ward, Mason, Fleury, Brodeur, & Luongo. Notice any exceptions from this list? Keep in mind this was just weeks after the Wings run to the finals.
@dejar44 That's great and all, but Steve Yzerman does not speak for an entire Hall of Fame committee and that was merely his choice. His reason for doing so, I can't say. Could his injury played a role still in this decision or risk of a future one, I don't know. And yes they were a necessary evil. It doesn't have to do with salary. It was for the sake of Osgood and his game. They started him in Grand Rapids so he could gather his strength and ability to play in the NHL after injury.
My point is, the fact that Osgood didn't even get invited to ORIENTATION CAMP clearly shows that Yzerman thinks that Osgood is at best, the 6 or 7th best CANADIAN goalie in the league. Factor in goalies from other countries (Thomas, Miller, Lundqvist, Kiprusoff) then it's safe to say that Yzerman likely thinks he was in the bottom 1/2 starting goalies. This is what everyone outside of Detroit thinks.

oddly enough, this year actually made me appreciate what a goalie like Oz can do. Luongo has all the talent in the world, but clearly his issue is between the ears. I think the Hawks really got into his head back in 09. He's been vulnerable mentally since then.
While Oz may not be the flashiest player on earth, mentally he's cool as a cucumber. That said, it's probably easier to not feel the pressure when your team is in the conference or cup finals every other year.
If you go back and watch the 09 stanley cup final game 7 it's clear that BOTH of maxim talbot's goals were offsides. and secondly, ozzie doesn't "suck" groin injuries have plagued him for the past 5 years. He's just old

The Pens, a real solid team that has shown itself of consist of quite much depth, especially after the trade deadline of last season, just played real solid shut-down hockey in Games 6 and 7 after getting drubbed by the Red Wings in Game 5 by the score of 5-0.
Their defensive playing style was very solid in those last two games (reminiscient of Red Wing style shut-down hockey?). But, during and immediately following Game 5, it looked pretty promising, once again, for the Red Wings alright.
The Wings lost games 6 and 7 against the Pens because the rest of the team figured they could sit back and let Hank and Dats win it by themselves again. The team got complacent. And this coming from one of the biggest Wings fans around.

Completely agree with you. We did get some bad calls our way, but they did as well. So it was all pretty much a wash. And even then, Hank was about 1/4 of an inch from tying that game 7.

I think that a lot of ppl/hockey fans/Red Wings' fans felt that the Red Wing beatdown of Pitts. in Game 5, by 5-0, really indicated a coming series clinch for the Red Wings... And, well, they got pretty close to that, especially in Game 6, for example, whenever it was in that game that Zetterberg hit the post/crossbar to tie it up or whatnot.
Honestly, though, the Pens played discplined, skilled, team-defensive hockey in Games 6 and 7, and it managed to work out for them well.

Osgood is one of the best fucking goalie in the history of hockey hell he has been a goalie for 18 years. He has won 3 cups. Scored a goal as a goalie back in the 90's and has achieved a bunch of other stuff hes also he is like 39 or 40. No one will ever be as good of a goalie as Osgood for a long time. He played pretty well on the Islanders too, and might have stayed there longer had Mike Milbury not been so insistent on upcoming loser Rick DiPietro. Osgood even went on the record saying that he wished to stay on Long Island indefinitely. What a loss for them.

The Pens, a real solid team that has shown itself of consist of quite much depth, especially after the trade deadline of last season, just played real solid shut-down hockey in Games 6 and 7 after getting drubbed by the Red Wings in Game 5 by the score of 5-0.
Their defensive playing style was very solid in those last two games (reminiscient of Red Wing style shut-down hockey?). But, during and immediately following Game 5, it looked pretty promising, once again, for the Red Wings alright.

Completely agree with you. We did get some bad calls our way, but they did as well. So it was all pretty much a wash. And even then, Hank was about 1/4 of an inch from tying that game 7.

They didn't, they also didn't call them for having 6 men on the ice durring game 7 for 20 seconds. Fact of the matter is, Bettman wanted the Pens to win, so he put refs in place and didn't enforce rules on the Pens so that they could have the upperhand, nuff said.

How are we like the yankees now? We were successful before the cap because of money, but more so because star players wanted to play here because its a great orginization with great ownership. And we've remained successful after the cap because we ARE built like an allstar team and have locked down some of the best players in the league. well they really needed two more goals...and the refs did seem to look the other way ALOT in the final when it went in the pens favor...and the only reason i think that is because theres a bigger market for the pens then for the wings...if the pens lost the cup two years in arow alot of pens bandwagon fans would stop watching and thus lose money for the NHL....most redwing fans will continue to watch hockey either way, was an upsetting loss but a loss none the less.

I think that a lot of ppl/hockey fans/Red Wings' fans felt that the Red Wing beatdown of Pitts. in Game 5, by 5-0, really indicated a coming series clinch for the Red Wings... And, well, they got pretty close to that, especially in Game 6, for example, whenever it was in that game that Zetterberg hit the post/crossbar to tie it up or whatnot.
Honestly, though, the Pens played discplined, skilled, team-defensive hockey in Games 6 and 7, and it managed to work out for them well.
