Hector's performance was so amazing that I would be afraid if I saw him in real life. He was so convincing as a heartless psychopath obsessed with power, and so young too. Marlo was pretty much born evil. I know Hector is a nice guy, which makes his performance all the more amazing. That look in his eyes he gets is chilling.
i dont understand all the hate on marlo. character shows exactly how u have to act to be succesful in todays world. if you want to be succesful businessman, lawyer you need to act just like that. obviously dont need to kill people, just give them minimum salary or fire them when they are no longer usefull. calculate, make decisions best for you, exploit everyone and dont give a **** about anyone else but yourself. nice guys never win.
Marlo is trying to prove that he's tough & his rep in the street is intact that he should be feared. Marlo will never give up the street life. Maybe for now but he will come back because it's who he is. He'd rather be in prison forever with his rep intact then quit the drug game forever because that would ruin his rep. Omar is dead but he still lives on through his rep but Marlo is just another drug lord that will be forgotten. This is proven when he asks the guys who he was & they had no clue.
@ndc18 he's like Avon. They are the streets. They're not businessmen like Stringer. Marlo left that fancy party because he felt out of place. Marlo was unnecessarily cruel. Just because someone talked shit, you need to die? Or if you think someone snitched on you but you have no proof, it's just what you heard, they need to die? That's harsh. He killed ppl for no damn reason!
That little laugh and grin Marlo did at the end, then he said "Yeah" and shook his head.
The thoughts that was going through his mind at the particular point was of gratification. Because he knew that he still had it and at any time he wanted he could come back and take over again. That last laugh was almost like saying "Yo, these guy out here are soft."
This scene is interesting. All Marlo ever cared about was his name (Which Omar helped destroy) and it means nothing now. Then he hears those two guys talking about Omar's legend that survived and he needs to remind someone who he is..
You notice in this clip, duke on the corner is talking about Omar, not Chris, Snoop, nor Marlo. If he would've been Omar walking up instead of Marlo, those dudes would've knew what time it is...but, being that, he was Marlo, they showed him no respect!
Marlo was one of my favourite characters in The Wire. His script was written so well and he was acted superbly. The Wire is still my favourite tv series.
If Marlo had died, his name would live on. If Marlo had been taken into jail as a drug kingpin, his name would live on. Instead he gets the life Stringer Bell clawed and fought for, tooth and nail, but never got, but to Marlo, it's a living hell where his name means nothing on the street. For all those wishing he died? He would've wanted that. For such a ruthless, pitiless individual, this is the perfect punishment.
@lobsterdfw1 Marlo scared? He was an animal in a cage so he went back to the streets, where he is in his element - he's the most coldhearted gangster in the whole show, I'd even call him a psychopath. He literally can't be scared :D
@lobsterdfw1 stringer and marlo were two very different people. Stringer was a more normal reasonable person who was just in it for the money. Marlo just gloves violence and power and being the baddest, he reminds me of alex form clockwork orange
This scene is awesome cause it is just like a game of chess. Marlo still is trying to convince himself hes the king so he basically takes out two simple pawns to just prove to himself that he still is.
After watching The Wire. Iv learned a lot. Dont EVER go to West, East, North oakland. Stay outta the projects/slums/ section 8. Im white and 20 years old.
Remember the scene where Chris Partlow sees off his Family for a while, while he goes off to War w/ Omar? Marlo's smiles for the first time at watching them together, he seems genuinely fascinated by them.
Even with all the bodies Marlo's got on him or his say so, he would consider this a fate worse than death. I think the money, or even his freedom, was only ever a bonus for him. He wanted the reputation and the control. Now that he's out of the game, he'll never have either. The locked up and the dead outshine him. He's even accomplished what Stringer died trying to build for himself. Marlo couldn't have less of a use for it. His name will fade away, and he'll settle into a life he doesn't want.
Chuckling like he did shows that he realized it and was happy, but the truth still saddened him to know that he never really got his rep before. When Marlo learned of what Omar said in the cell, he feared that everyone thought he was a punk cause he didn't step to Omar, but after fighting those guys, he realized he wasn't even thought of at all. Marlo obviously7 had a Gotti complex.
@washingyou333 I don't know about that. If Chris and Snoop told Marlo the news, more than likely he'd send them to hit him. Now Omar may be a challenge, but Chris and Snoop fear no one. And even if Marlo did want to go toe to toe with Omar, I doubt Monk or anyone else would've worried about it drawing more heat to the organization. They didn't care as much about heat when Marlo shot that girl on the front lawn.
@washingyou333 I truly believe they knew Omar would lay him out if he did go at him, but they really felt Marlo wouldn't anyway. He'd just send more goons out to him and get knocked down by Omar one by one. Michael, Chris, and Snoop couldn't even get him at Monk's spot.
@DaRocker21 i dont think he was afraid to step to anyone on the streets this scene showed that. he's the boss though and the boss has people to do that for him. i think the writers gave small signs of how ruthless and what marlo's was capable of doing. the scene when he shot stringers girl in both of her breasts and when they were practicing shooting and marlo was hitting the bottles with ease showed that he was probably good with a gun. like i said though he was the boss so he has workers.
That's why Chris, Snoop, Michael, and Monk withheld the news from him about what Omar said, cause they knew he wouldn't step to Omar. After battling the guys on the corner, Marlo realized that other than his connects and competition, no one else on the streets really knew about him. Omar's rep was all over the city cause he was "in" the streets and made his name known as a legend. The guys here on the corner talking exemplifies that. This was the frist time Marlo really got it in on the street.
Marlo and Omar had many differences (morale, code, etc.), but this scene explained their differences in street rep. Once Marlo heard the clockers talking about Omar, he stepped to them out of anger. After asking him who he was and the guy didn't know, told Marlo everything he feared about his rep. Omar was right all along. Marlo didn't have the heart to step to the streets and get his hands dirty (except for killing the woman who set them up, but she wasn't any big dog).
@washingyou333 That's true, but mostly with larger scale criminal organizations like La Cosa Nostra, Red Mafia, Yakuza, etc. Hell, even the Latin Kings and Bloods' Presidents for that matter. But I give it to Avon/ Stringer, Prop Joe, and Marlo though. They had their shit together so much, they were considered running criminals organizations instead of small time street gangs.
first time i saw this i was mad that they didnt kill him but the show really revealed that he is as good as dead in this scene. he will live the rest of his life a nobody and he can't do anything about it, a punishment worse than death to some people.
It would have been really ironic if that dude who pulled a gun had shot and killed Marlo, just like that.
On another note, I wonder why Slim Charles didn't feel the need to kill Marlo for revenge for Prop Joe. He killed Cheese because he knew he set Joe up, but Marlo was the one who had Joe killed in the first place. So, why not confront Marlo and kill him as well?
@KevinLockard23 Slim had respect for Marlo and understood it was just business nothing personal. Cheese pissed Slim off personally and that's why he got one in the dome. That and the fact that at the end of it all Slim was working for Marlo and Slim is loyal to his boss. Always.
@KevinLockard23@SonnyA89 is right. The Game is the Game! Slim was always an employee. He even said to Marlo at the Co-op sit-down, "...I ain't no CEO!". His employer was Avon (West) then Prop Joe (East), he's indifferent. Slim only makes moves when ordered, never on his own. Slim knows Marlo getting at Joe is all in the Game but Cheese's moves went against the Code. He was disloyal, even to a blood relation. As Prop Joe's 'hired muscle' he had to get at Cheese for his betrayal.
@bxjam85 He wanted to get his street cred back. His name and rep was tarnished by Omar calling him out. He knew in order to get back to the streets to take over again he had to show people that he WAS the real deal and not what Omar made him out to be.
To me it seemed that Marlo felt out of place with the dignitaries. He would rather be the big fish in the small, dirty bowl of polluted water; rather than a small fish in a big clean bowl. Due to his courage, Omar became a legend and that's what marlo wanted. Marlo felted accomplished not by the accolades of the professionals, but by the recognition of the people in the hood... this really tell us that marlo was nothing more than a hood guy.
Omar took all that Nigga Street Cred.... Marlo could'nt live with that.Omar spent weeks Injured walking around on Foot calling him out...After a while Marlo felt rubbing elbows with the rich was'nt his thang.... The streets kept calling. Whats crazier is Niggas is talking about Omar's legend as he walks up to try and dispell what Omar labeled him as....
I love the way The Wire made the fate of some characters ambiguous but inevitable. Marlo is fucked. He can't operate at the level he's evolved to, and he can't go back to what he's comfortable with. He'll keep pulling stupid shit like this until he's dead or in jail.
@whoostino I dunno man. Marlo's got a lot of money. Money buy's people look at Cheese. And if the story shows anything its that there's a whole lot more like Cheese. The constant theme of series 4 and 5 is that it ain't like the old days. No more loyalty, no more honour, just cash and Marlo's got a lot of cash. He can buy new soldiers, make a new organisation. He's out, he's rich, the only thing he gotta worry about is the State's Attorney.
You may be right, but State's Attorney is a pretty big worry. And Marlo's cool demeanor hides the fact that at heart, he's pretty unstable. The guy had a rent-a-cop killed for no other reason than that he lost a card card game. And this street corner scene, how many times can he pull that off? They all go down if they stay in; Avon, Stringer, Omar... "Graveyard's filled with boys who wore the crown."
I think there were some hints dropped as to what Marlo is likely going to do. We see that business life doesn't suit him and isn't what he's after. As many have pointed out, he wants his name to ring out. Only chance of that happening is getting back on the streets. In The Sopranos a lot of foreshadowing was used and I believe the death of Prop Joe used that technique. Marlo: 'Joe, you'll be up in a mischief in no time. Truth is you won't be able to change up any more than me'
Yea he may be a lil somthing but not a legend like Omar. Remember he wanted his name to ring out. But Omar crushed that by calling him out and is a legend even if dead. No one knows Marlo cause he had enforcers. You can do a lot but if ppl never heard of it how do u get recognition?
u can take the nigger out the hood....& u know the rest. Certain street cats can adapt to change & move on to bigger & better things wen they caked out enough 2 leave the life. However there's the other breed that could clear a Hundred M's & still not leave that bullshit alone, there destiny is to live & die in the street, that's wen it's not about the moolah at all just that fukin life
@bxjam85 Dude you are right. idk what the other guy is talking about. He wanted that last taste of the street before he bowed out and also to prove to himself I guess that he will step to any motherfucker in the street..since before Omar died he said Marlo couldn't step in the street alone.
@bxjam85 The meaning of this scene is that Marlo is forgotten. His name is tarnished, lost, history. Game over. He's defeated.
If you're asking if he will attempt to get back in the game even though it's a guaranteed ticket to prison, then I don't know. Nobody does. This scene doesn't tell us if he will or not. He probably won't, because he knows there's evidence for his conviction that will be released if he's spotted back in the game. But we know this before having watched this scene.
@bxjam85 We don't know if he goes back to street life or not. The point is that Marlo is eventually defeated -- not by death or jail, but by being forgotten on the streets.
Whether or not he "rises" from this is like asking if Avon eventually gets out of jail to return to the game, or if Omar rises from the dead.
What happens next is completely irrelevant, and usually is with series finales. He may end up being hit by a car the next day. He may suddenly turn religious. "Next" doesn't matter.
@bxjam85 The symbolism is that he believes he belongs on the street and will stay there. He's a corner boy at heart, not a Maurice Levy. This scene compares him to Avon who made it clear earlier in the series he was "just a gangster" and wanted nothing to do with the investment life that Stringer wanted for him. Similarly, Marlo had just walked out of the same meeting that Stringer would have given his left arm for and Avon would have scorned. Marlo, like Avon, always saw his place in the game.
Damm the way Marlo moved right there kinda make me wonder why he was mad in jail at his people for not tellin him Omar was putting his name on the street.think he would've took Omar
@ThrowingThrowies This scene clearly showed that Marlo was no chump and could hold his own as a soldier not just a king. But get real, he took on two youngins while impressive he was still out of practice unlike Omar who was a one man army tearing the westside up. "The King has no Hustle"
Marlo s the fuckinqq king man if the storyy would of continued the 2 boys woula ran and got there big homie ir whateuer and brought him back to confront Marlo then when the big homie realized that is was Marlo the 2 boys woulda been scared shitless ! Marlo michael snoop nd chris they was the hardest people in my opinion
Dude below is right...this scene was about how Marlo was a gangster through and through, he couldn't go white collar....he was just a gangster...no more no less..
I never got this scene I mean did THAT much time pass pll dunno who that bitch marlo is lol. Hes gonna get bleed dry for his money by The real gangters aka lawyers and politicians just like stringer bell did with that smilin motherfucker the politician that always said "Shiiiiiiit" lol. gangters gotta be gangters and bussiness men gotta be business men when the two try to meet aka stringer aka marlo u asking for trouble. play ur postion.
the bottom line of this scene, marlos already been forgotten and someones already took his place on the streets, even the corner boys dont even know who he is no more... but omars legend lives on. marlos as good as dead on the streets now. but omars legend is still stong
shit, noone would even THINK of talking back to marlo before his crew got locked up. yet alone bust a gat at him! also you gotta remember omar dragged marlos name through the fuckin dirty.. called that mother fucker out.
Wtf is everybody talking bou marlo was a fucking legend he did this because he from the streets thats all he knows so he wants to see if he still has it in him and how the hell is he a devil because he sells drugs and kils people? in that case the ceo of mcdonalds is the devil to at the end of the day it's currency that matters and to get money in the streets your name has to matter.
Omar outlived him, his legend continues to grow, while Marlo's already forgotten. The reason for that is that Omar was an original, a self made man who built his reputation over years of work.
This was one of my favorites scenes of the entire show. Given a chance for a totally legit life of easy money and luxury, but he rejects it. He wants his name to be on the streets, his rep to be legendary, and you don’t get that by building a condo. Marlo was EXACTLY like Avon Barksdale, but a little smarter & more ruthless than him.
He wanders onto the street, his corner, but no one knows his name. It was his reputation he valued most, but all that is gone, just because of Omar.
I love the symbolism in the wire. Stringer was the representation of unfettered capitalism, Marlo was the represented the Machiavellian quest for power, and Avon just wanted to be a gangster.
The disparity between Omar's and Marlo's fates really exemplifies a lot about the nature of the game. While Marlo retained his life, he is really as good as dead to all the gangsters in the city, because his entire crew is in jail and Omar spent the last few months of his life dragging Marlo's name through the mud. Similarly, while Omar dies, he is mythologized because of the way that people perceived him while he was alive.
@JohnBrody23 Yes, but because people have this preconceived notion of Omar, they conveniently overlook that fact. The main lesson of these two characters' fates is that the truth does not matter, but rather what people believe to be the truth.
@Sackobooks While that is true, you have to remember that when Omar died, he had no one with him. His body was mislabelled, no one there to claim it, and he was just a nameless footnote in the paper. Meanwhile, Marlo is walking around free, with money overflowing, and he gets to start a new life. Ultimately, it all goes back to the same discussion Avon and Stringer had: what did they get in the game for? Is it for the money, or so that their names can ring out on some ghetto corners?
@imserious2187 Marlo wanted the crown and had it for a short while before getting arrested by the police. In order to avoid jail, he had to give up the crown. Marlo had to become a legit person of business. He appears to feel alienate in the business, with everyone around him in nice suits at the event he was at. He achieved Stringer's dream but did not want it for himself. So he left the party. He then goes to the corner and beats down the two fools. Being a drug dealer. He may have done it
@imserious2187 mostly for the money, but the end comes off that he enjoys for the thrill of it. Like someone hunting wild animals, much like Omar when he robbed drug dealers.
i think marlo did this to grow his legend on the street. thats what he strove for. that is what is the most important thing to him. the scene in jail, where he is screaming "MY NAME IS MY NAME" and the fact that he says "do you know who i am?" in this scene are evidence of that. to him, it wasnt about the money, or becoming legit or anything. it was all about rep on the streets.
marlo wanted one last taste of the streets, to blow off steam about not being able to face off with omar, he saw his own blood too for the first time, and now he's gonna go wreck havoc in the business world
@BennyGaberMusic Nah my dude.....Marlo lucky to be alive........Don't forget Avon's muscle had the drop on Marlo at the end of season 3......Slim Charles, was calling Avon, to get the go ahead on him, but the police raided Avon's spot while Slim was calling.....Had that raid not have happen, Slim and the rest of Avon's muscle would have lit Marlo''s ass up.
I think a lot of people dont understand that scene. His rep is zero ? But thats exactly what this scene is about. He doesnt give a fuck if hes going to jail by living the gangsta way again. Because this what he is, who he is. He wants to rebuild everything. Many people understimate Marlo but he's been the MOST intelligent bad guy in the show. Remember what he said to Prop Joe ? "None of us will ever change". He lost Snoop and Chris ? He'll find other people to help him.
@TheJoe971 True, but I wouldn't say that's all. It seemed to be clear indication that people like him, dudes with big money, dealing drugs, and slinging hired muscle, are common place. He strove this illusion of the "crown" for nothing, because he doesn't do anything to make him worth remembering.
On the other hand, a man like Omar established a lasting impression with the things he did. Stories were being told of him after he was gone.
Marlo is out of jail and alive. As far as his name being important to the streets is over. Honestly with snoop gone and Chris in jail Marlo is so easy to target. If they had another season he probably be in puerto Rico or dead.
This scene is great. It shows that no one knew who Marlo was because he always had snoop and chris do his dirty work. If Omar was walking around....they would of ran before he had a chance to come up on them.
makes it interesting television (cause if we all interviewed or watched a REAL documentary on the actual characters (real life counterparts) of the characters on the wire, we would probably be bored to tears - to hear their stories, not as much action as the show, or nearly as many bullets flying - but still this show depicts with so much pinpoint realism, you can almost smell the air in the pit, as bodie spits on the ground sitting on that couch that they hold court in. Shits deep.
actual stick-up crew robbin a stash house "in progress" and bullets flying thru the streets - it happens I know, crews are run in streets "owned by" certain dealers, hoppers, lookouts, runners, the dope stashed somewhere on the avenue, customers told to drive down end of street, come all the way back around and back up the alley, so they fetch the purchase and handoff, and (etc, etc) alot of realism to the show but also some of the things HAVE to be enhanced to get views/ratings but thats what
actually know, been down hundreds of times with different people throughout the years (etc, etc) while this show is (a bit) hyped up, some fictional story lines, mixed with actual nonfiction events that occured (to David Simon) and company - mixed with a bit of hollywood swag (not much, enough to keep the accuracy/realism of the streets) I mean in reality most of us that have been downtown or lived downtown and cop'd dope/coke (boy/girl) in this city (park heights/west bmore) u aint gonna see a
chaos reign, are the true gangsters - marlo knew the game, reguardless of his backstory (which most of us dont know much about) the irony of this entire show is - when I watch it (being I'm from baltimore county, md) grew up all my life 29 years to this day and only 20-25 minutes from where all this shit goes on/filmed (and with a recovering habit from dope..as well as majority of the people I grew up with) its like an unspoken silence watching this show...just the locales...seeing streets I
of loyalty thru whatever means. And the scene with the security guard, he knew who marlo was wanted to do his job, not be disrespected as a man but didnt step to marlo either..gangsta doesnt have to be bout "how many girls u fukd, or if u carrying heat, or how good u are with ur fist" its truely about the attitude, the swagg, your walk, your mentality, the most cold ruthless calm, men of few words, who get the job done (and dont even gotta lift a finger themselves) sit back and let the
white kids head he dont flinch nothing like "do it or not, but i got places to be" its like hes not even realizing its a human life or cares what happens lol - dude is seriously cold if this/that was a non-fictional character and he ran these same streets nowadays (2008/09, 2010, etc) he would get alot of respect, either thru fear an intimidation or handing out money (as he did) to the community he resided in, they knew what he was (what he is) but outside of michael they took his loot, a sign
marlo be stackin bodies w/ just a phone call or a nod of the head, he cold ruthless, inlove with his name, addicted to the streets, he wanted to see if he still had it, he does - in a suit, 2 vs 1 w/ no weapon - and then tastes the cut/blood and has a nod and a laugh like "yea...just like I thought" shittt you can hate on him all you want, just like earlier scenes when his muscle/driver got that white boy who hit their SUV w/ his shopping cart in season 4 marlo watches his boy w/ the gun to the
I love that the last shot of Marlo is is him alone on the corner. He got to the point where he could be a "suit wearing business man" but in the end "he was just gangsta I suppose."
@casper2525 I guess from my prospective, was that Marlo did all that work eliminating his rivals and all that work moving up and still he wasn't recognized like Barksdale, Omar, or Proposition Joe. He wasn't a gangster (btw gangstas are the niggas he went up to on the corner), he was just a more business type of nigga, not street.
love how at the start they're talking about Omar's death like it was on some scarface shit....went out in a massive shoot out surrounded by 8-9 dudes & he was by himself with his AK talkin bout "you think you can take me" lol
Marlo did this because he wanted to be known as one of the baddest motherfucker in the streets even season 3 that all he wanted though just power of people fearing him thats why when he was in jail he was so upset how chris didn't tell him about omar looking for him but he will be back on the streets though but without snoop or chris those two hold there own too
For me, this showed that Marlo Stanfield is a man of his time and place.
He is a man of the streets of Baltimore, and nobody, not even Marlo, can change that.
And as many others have said, there's a rush that this character is addicted to. It's the feeling of dominating and conquering other individuals through ones own will and strength.
2 vs. 1? No contest. A blade and a gun against an unarmed man? Within arms reach, again, no contest.
This scene shows he'll be back in the street eventually - and hence got at by the police. Which makes those of us who hated the little shit slightly happier at the end of this great show.
Really??? I think at that point he realized that his reputation is trashed (by Omar) and he is done... for good... he was already told by levy that if he got back into the mix he was going to get arrested by police with dirt they already have on him... There is no comeback for Marlo... he crawled under a rock somewhere after this scene...
hey.. at least he's still alive and not locked up. he;s one of the lucky ones.. even tho his rep is Zero...
@PezkeyWabbitz I don't think he is lucky. You judge success by a man's own standards, and Marlo's was his rep. Better dead and a hero or locked up and legend by his book.

DaRocker21 1 month ago
@DaRocker21 nah Marlo did not know what Omar was saying because snoop and chris kept it from him cause they knew he would wild out!!!
washingyou333 1 month ago
@washingyou333 I don't know about that. If Chris and Snoop told Marlo the news, more than likely he'd send them to hit him. Now Omar may be a challenge, but Chris and Snoop fear no one. And even if Marlo did want to go toe to toe with Omar, I doubt Monk or anyone else would've worried about it drawing more heat to the organization. They didn't care as much about heat when Marlo shot that girl on the front lawn.
DaRocker21 1 month ago
@washingyou333 I truly believe they knew Omar would lay him out if he did go at him, but they really felt Marlo wouldn't anyway. He'd just send more goons out to him and get knocked down by Omar one by one. Michael, Chris, and Snoop couldn't even get him at Monk's spot.
DaRocker21 1 month ago
@DaRocker21 i dont think he was afraid to step to anyone on the streets this scene showed that. he's the boss though and the boss has people to do that for him. i think the writers gave small signs of how ruthless and what marlo's was capable of doing. the scene when he shot stringers girl in both of her breasts and when they were practicing shooting and marlo was hitting the bottles with ease showed that he was probably good with a gun. like i said though he was the boss so he has workers.
kaaylo1 1 month ago
That's why Chris, Snoop, Michael, and Monk withheld the news from him about what Omar said, cause they knew he wouldn't step to Omar. After battling the guys on the corner, Marlo realized that other than his connects and competition, no one else on the streets really knew about him. Omar's rep was all over the city cause he was "in" the streets and made his name known as a legend. The guys here on the corner talking exemplifies that. This was the frist time Marlo really got it in on the street.
DaRocker21 1 month ago
@DaRocker21 thats true
washingyou333 1 month ago
Marlo and Omar had many differences (morale, code, etc.), but this scene explained their differences in street rep. Once Marlo heard the clockers talking about Omar, he stepped to them out of anger. After asking him who he was and the guy didn't know, told Marlo everything he feared about his rep. Omar was right all along. Marlo didn't have the heart to step to the streets and get his hands dirty (except for killing the woman who set them up, but she wasn't any big dog).
DaRocker21 1 month ago
@DaRocker21 thats true too, but a boss aint gotta get his hands dirty
washingyou333 1 month ago
@washingyou333 That's true, but mostly with larger scale criminal organizations like La Cosa Nostra, Red Mafia, Yakuza, etc. Hell, even the Latin Kings and Bloods' Presidents for that matter. But I give it to Avon/ Stringer, Prop Joe, and Marlo though. They had their shit together so much, they were considered running criminals organizations instead of small time street gangs.

KevinLockard23 1 month ago
@KevinLockard23 Slim had respect for Marlo and understood it was just business nothing personal. Cheese pissed Slim off personally and that's why he got one in the dome. That and the fact that at the end of it all Slim was working for Marlo and Slim is loyal to his boss. Always.
SonnyA89 1 month ago
@KevinLockard23 @SonnyA89 is right.
ChequeWriter 1 month ago
@bxjam85 He wanted to get his street cred back. His name and rep was tarnished by Omar calling him out. He knew in order to get back to the streets to take over again he had to show people that he WAS the real deal and not what Omar made him out to be.
SDSOverfiend 1 month ago
To me it seemed that Marlo felt out of place with the dignitaries. He would rather be the big fish in the small, dirty bowl of polluted water; rather than a small fish in a big clean bowl. Due to his courage, Omar became a legend and that's what marlo wanted. Marlo felted accomplished not by the accolades of the professionals, but by the recognition of the people in the hood... this really tell us that marlo was nothing more than a hood guy.

I love the way The Wire made the fate of some characters ambiguous but inevitable. Marlo is fucked. He can't operate at the level he's evolved to, and he can't go back to what he's comfortable with. He'll keep pulling stupid shit like this until he's dead or in jail.
whoostino 1 month ago
@whoostino I dunno man. Marlo's got a lot of money. Money buy's people look at Cheese. And if the story shows anything its that there's a whole lot more like Cheese. The constant theme of series 4 and 5 is that it ain't like the old days. No more loyalty, no more honour, just cash and Marlo's got a lot of cash. He can buy new soldiers, make a new organisation. He's out, he's rich, the only thing he gotta worry about is the State's Attorney.
Crosshandz 1 month ago
@Crosshandz
"Graveyard's filled with boys who wore the crown."
whoostino 1 month ago
@bxjam85

Airbornebull 2 months ago
@bxjam85 The meaning of this scene is that Marlo is forgotten. His name is tarnished, lost, history. Game over. He's defeated.
If you're asking if he will attempt to get back in the game even though it's a guaranteed ticket to prison, then I don't know. Nobody does. This scene doesn't tell us if he will or not. He probably won't, because he knows there's evidence for his conviction that will be released if he's spotted back in the game. But we know this before having watched this scene.
OoerBostanci 2 months ago
to OoerBostanci... preach brotha, preach... to the point
kizdeeznutz 2 months ago
@bxjam85 We don't know if he goes back to street life or not. The point is that Marlo is eventually defeated -- not by death or jail, but by being forgotten on the streets.
Whether or not he "rises" from this is like asking if Avon eventually gets out of jail to return to the game, or if Omar rises from the dead.
What happens next is completely irrelevant, and usually is with series finales. He may end up being hit by a car the next day. He may suddenly turn religious. "Next" doesn't matter.
OoerBostanci 2 months ago
@bxjam85 The symbolism is that he believes he belongs on the street and will stay there. He's a corner boy at heart, not a Maurice Levy. This scene compares him to Avon who made it clear earlier in the series he was "just a gangster" and wanted nothing to do with the investment life that Stringer wanted for him. Similarly, Marlo had just walked out of the same meeting that Stringer would have given his left arm for and Avon would have scorned. Marlo, like Avon, always saw his place in the game.

jollyrocks1 3 months ago
Omar outlived him, his legend continues to grow, while Marlo's already forgotten. The reason for that is that Omar was an original, a self made man who built his reputation over years of work.
diplomats101 3 months ago 13
This was one of my favorites scenes of the entire show. Given a chance for a totally legit life of easy money and luxury, but he rejects it. He wants his name to be on the streets, his rep to be legendary, and you don’t get that by building a condo. Marlo was EXACTLY like Avon Barksdale, but a little smarter & more ruthless than him.
He wanders onto the street, his corner, but no one knows his name. It was his reputation he valued most, but all that is gone, just because of Omar.

@Sackobooks I know bro, I was just being facetious. Your shit was on point.
JohnBrody23 3 months ago
@Sackobooks While that is true, you have to remember that when Omar died, he had no one with him. His body was mislabelled, no one there to claim it, and he was just a nameless footnote in the paper. Meanwhile, Marlo is walking around free, with money overflowing, and he gets to start a new life. Ultimately, it all goes back to the same discussion Avon and Stringer had: what did they get in the game for? Is it for the money, or so that their names can ring out on some ghetto corners?

imserious2187 4 months ago
@imserious2187 Marlo wanted the crown and had it for a short while before getting arrested by the police. In order to avoid jail, he had to give up the crown. Marlo had to become a legit person of business. He appears to feel alienate in the business, with everyone around him in nice suits at the event he was at. He achieved Stringer's dream but did not want it for himself. So he left the party. He then goes to the corner and beats down the two fools. Being a drug dealer. He may have done it
12goofyboy 4 months ago
@imserious2187 mostly for the money, but the end comes off that he enjoys for the thrill of it. Like someone hunting wild animals, much like Omar when he robbed drug dealers.

i think marlo did this to grow his legend on the street. thats what he strove for. that is what is the most important thing to him. the scene in jail, where he is screaming "MY NAME IS MY NAME" and the fact that he says "do you know who i am?" in this scene are evidence of that. to him, it wasnt about the money, or becoming legit or anything. it was all about rep on the streets.

TheJoe971 6 months ago
@TheJoe971 True, but I wouldn't say that's all. It seemed to be clear indication that people like him, dudes with big money, dealing drugs, and slinging hired muscle, are common place. He strove this illusion of the "crown" for nothing, because he doesn't do anything to make him worth remembering.
On the other hand, a man like Omar established a lasting impression with the things he did. Stories were being told of him after he was gone.

makes it interesting television (cause if we all interviewed or watched a REAL documentary on the actual characters (real life counterparts) of the characters on the wire, we would probably be bored to tears - to hear their stories, not as much action as the show, or nearly as many bullets flying - but still this show depicts with so much pinpoint realism, you can almost smell the air in the pit, as bodie spits on the ground sitting on that couch that they hold court in.
