A cult grows, referring to the SJVSB in excessively glowing terms; esp. Dudamel, described as 'genius', 'miracle', 'incredible'... ever more superlative adulation. Excellent, attractive, they surely are, but not unique; the UKNYO and European YO etc. also reach superb standards. The thing to grasp and emulate is the process, Venezuela's system of choice, development and educational focus. These are young humans, imperfect, developing over time. Let's grasp the process, not worship the product.

What is interesting is not only Bartok's masterpiece but, also, the standards set forth by El Sistema in training of musicians. This is a "Concerto for Orchestra" and please listen to the quality of playing in every instrument and decide for yourselves how capable these young musicians are. In the early years of the USSR there formed music training nuclei for the youth but eventually fell apart even though USSR produced prolific composers. El Sistema seems to be more profound in their approach..

I have watched many of the concerts conducted by Maestro Dudamel, but it is his rehersals that reveal his genius. He has memorized and thus internalized this score. He now is free to attend to the details that he must get from the orchestra. He knows what he wants, and knows how to get it. He has a formula one orchestra, and knows how to use it.
