this scene is an example of different ways consumers (or in this case: users) reappropriate mass culture for their own goals instead of using the media in the ways the creators intended that media to be used. in this case, the dancers are using the music as an indiviual expression, then group expression, then another couple use it as a tool of seduction. there's a conversation about madonna after this scene that verifies my point. look up michel de certeau.
yup. In fact if you search 'Nouvelle Vague' on Youtube you will find that scene from Bande A Part cut to music by the current french band Nouvelle Vague. Amazing. Another dance scene I love is Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie
anohter moment--slightly unrelated--is elina as a vampire in Nadja floating downt the street to Portishead. Back to Hal Hartely, let us not forget Adrienne Shelley's movies with Hal. Unbelievable. Saw Fay Grim the other night: crap. What happened?!
It's like some film student had a clever idea for a sequel to Henry Fool, ha ha, and then wrote a scripty in the identical style as Hal. Without any piercing insightful moments except for the easy ending.. that stole from both Simple Men AND Amateur.
Whew. Don't get me started. I just miss Hal...the REAL Hal. Come back.
Personally I think that he's still trying to write about a place and a time that may not still exist, and yet setting the films in the present. Fay Grim wasn't bad for what it was, but Hartley hasn't lived in Queens for a decade now. He needs to go entirely to one end (Flirt) or entirely to the other (Henry Fool). This middle ground doesn't suit him well.
oh. em. gee....

yeah. Isn't that dance scene taken from West Side Story? Where is this dance sequence referring to in Simple Men. I used to know but forgot...

I think it references Band of Outsiders by Godard. (Bande a part)
