I have two questions. While standing in front of the drop zone does the spawn have to be active? Because i am 17 blocks away from the spawner as directed and it is not active which means i cannot stand afk to collect items. Second question- How do you stand in front of the drop zone without getting shot by the skeletons?

i recently found this out. if u dont want any mobs to spawn on the spawner then put a half slab on it and they wont spawn on it. this way u can have a roof 3 blocks higher than the spawner and get a better spawn rate.

Great tut, and I've implemented in my world. I made a minor tweak...instead of changing the floor (for some reason, it doesn't always work), I have a sticky piston about four cells above and to one side of the landing zone w/ sign that blocks/allows a lava flow to burn mobs as they fall through. Also, glass slides over the lower opening so mobs can't hurt me while I sit AFK in the corner to collect loots. Great start though, thanks.

In the new update vines function like ladders but didn't get fixed so they have no hitbox! So use vines (or signs for boring people)

Use signs, not ladders. in 1.2 the ladders have hitboxes again.

In 1.1 ladders don't hav hitboxes but in 1.2 the pre release they now do

I went afk for about an hour, the skeletons stacked up but when I went to kill them, they all started trying to fire at me and basically shot themselves so I only got about 1xp... but I did get like 2x64 arrows

You will need a 2x2 mob-elevater, and those are a pain. you will also need to make the drop chamber much wider to prevent then from latching onto the side. also note that the prerelease for the next version gives ladders thier hit box back so you might want to use signs in the mob elevator.

I was a bit frustrated with the upgrade to 1.1 as all of my spawners stopped working, and I was not looking forward to building yet another massive machine (piston spawner)...but I found a few good spawners in my world and put your idea into action right away. Minecraft 1.2 will put the collision box back in so ladders won't work as well for the elevator. Instead just use signs. It's a pain ¬_¬

if you leave a block without water just before the drop they will survive more often because water makes mobs jump. so being pushed in while jumping they might fall a little bit more. and in terms of fall damage, anything more than nothing counts as a full block of fall damage
