One of the best and scariest scifi movies of the 50s. May not be understood by some of the younger generations who need spattered blood and brains to enjoy a movie.
I remember seeing this YEARS ago (maybe at least 20 yrs ago) when I was in grade school..lol! It must have been movie day or something. Haven't seen it since. Thanks for posting!!
A remake? It would be lame. This film started out as something like a 1950s crime drama and gradually evolved into a great monster flick. Warner Bros didn't make a lot of monster movies (like Universal). THEM! is Cold War Sci-Fi at its best.
i love this movie i used to watch when i was like 8 years old when they had monster movie marathon and shit me and my grandma. i really want to find this movie i been collecting older monster movies left and right this summer but cant find them!
They did a movie about giant scorpions, called "Black Scorpion." It was also caused by the nuclear testing. And, of course Godzilla came from these tests, too. There was a movie about a giant spider that came from a scientist doing strange experiments. Those were the good old days. Oh, yeah. There was also one with giant praying mantises. New movies could come from the effect of agent orange or something. Military use many secret weapons now.
@HorrorLover128 Didn't mention what the class was. THEM Set standard of Atomic Monsters for the 50s! Actors played their roles to a 'T"! This film started the idea of including some basic science concerning the 'monsters', film that is played for the heads of the US Govt. This gave those watchin' the movie a little bit of understanding of ant behavior! It starts off as a mystery then a possible murder investigation until it comes SF--can think of this as the 1st X-Files! James Arness FBI Agent
@HorrorLover128 Goes to show how moronic most kids are nowadays..if its not computer generated..they think its fake..when the truth is just the opposite...lol ...you hang in there kid...you'll rule all those other kids when you get older

My dream is to remake Them! I'm already writing a script and everything, hell I may be only 14 but I have my whole life to get it together! XD and The Army is going to be way more invovled in it
Mostly all the foolish film makers of today can do is remake classic films, because they have no imagination nor any ideas of their own. If they aren't remaking an old classic like this or countless others, they are turning an old classic TV show into a movie, and they all stink like shit 90% of the time.
Don't worry guys. There's a little thing called the "Square Cube Law" that would prevent bugs that size from ever existing.
Every time a creature's size is squared, it's weight should be cubed. Those bugs would not be able to support their own weight on their thin legs.
Also, one reason bugs like that existed back during the age of the dinosaurs was that there was more oxygen in the atmosphere, which there isn't today.
We may be witnesses to a Biblical prophecy come true And there shall be destruction and darkness come upon creation and the beast shall reign over the earth
Though this film doesn't need a remake, there have been plenty of good remakes.
The Manchurian Candidate, King Kong, The Crazies Dawn of the dead, Invasion of the body snatchers, Cape Fear, The Parent trap, Insomnia, The Thomas crown affair, 3:10 to yuma, The Italian Job, Father of the bride, Nosferatu, Oceans 11, The magnificent Seven, Scarface, The Thing, The thomas crown affair, Little shop of horrors ect. ect.
@tobar1p Remakes aren't a bad thing, The Italian Job is great, Dawn of the Dead? Scarface?
You have to think about the good ones too.
but there is a difference between something that has to be remade and every single movie ever being remade. Like this, this should not be remade, it's just a piece of that time period. It would not do good now.
@Cogniwave Except remakes are just about all they're doing nowadays, and they are mostly POS's (or would that be PsoS?) Them! is a great classic. Film makers today don't know how to remake a good movie. If they did it now they'd probably CGI all the soul out of it like they did with The Haunting. Or make the story totally stupid like with The Wicker Man, going from classic to something I walked out on, a total waste of cash and time.

@tobar1p uhhh, the day the earth stood still was a good remake.they had some good ideas that were fun and origional in the past, why deny modern kids all that goodness?remember the remake of the blob in about 85 or 86?
@superbert35 The Day the Earth Stood Still remake was horrible! Who's denying anyone anything? These movies are widely available on DVD for all to enjoy.
@tobar1p =O!! you didnt like the day the earth stood still,im shocked.hmm,i thought it was a good friday night flick.just an idea, perhaps seeing as how a dvd prolly costs a company 10 cents, when a remake is done,a copy of the origional could be included in the box.im just thinking of how cool some of those old gems would be redone with modern tech, like "them" 3d on a big screen,or how bout that one,the killer bees 3d? yikes!
@tobar1p And if there is a remake, the directors nowadays would over exaggerate things. Take the remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still". I own it, and not one time in the original is there massive destruction or explosions. The remake had that, and soured it completely, ruining the original plot. And the remake of The War of The Worlds was bad in my taste too.
@DarkDialga960 Exactly. The problem with today's big films is that there's no substance to them. They're all about the flashy special effects and completely neglect the story. Likewise, the majority of remakes fail to retain what made the originals so great because they focus on the wrong things.
This is one movie that will probably never get a remake because the idea that inspired it, Fear of the Atomic Bomb isn't as overt or prevelant as it was back when THEM was made
@snakes3425 - they could have genetic engineering as the cause, instead of radiation. If they could do it in the spider-man movie they could do it for this. having said that, though, I hope they don't do a remake. Modern remakes are just crappy cash-ins on old good films.
You know I've seen the movie and the words I use to describe it is LET DOWN the trailer and the movie hypes it up to the point you're looking forward to a huge climactic battle with the Ants on a rampage in LA and the Military trying to hunt them down, instead they say let's focus on finding two little boys and have our big final battle end in the sewers with the army instantally killing the queens, hell the Ants don't even get to destroy one building in downtown LA
Remakes only work when their is love and passion for the orginal present during production, THEM however I don't see how you could do a remake because the message about the dangers of the Atom Bomb no longer apply
@tobar1p Let's see: The Thing, Scarface, Scent of a Woman, 12 monkeys, Heat, 12, 3:10 to Yuma, Ocean's Eleven, Man on Fire, Zatôichi, The Departed, True Grit.
Oh RIGHT, the point was for movie fans like me to agree with your harsh, irrational, overgeneralization - no, you're totally right, please continue...
YEAH ! Saturday matinee, butter popcorn and an icecold coke ! Those black and white screen monsters seemed invincible ! But we new our Army guys could kill "THEM" off and save the world. LONG LIVE THOSE 50's SCI-FI CLASSICS ! Anyone remember "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms?
I've saw this movie when I was still a little kid and now have the DVD. Great movie... I wonder what they could do today if they had a remake with modern special effects and CG... I can only hope... :D
the great thing about this classic wasthat they had to construct those giant ants in that size for real ...no CG here, and the actors were really scared of being in scenes with THEM
The 1950's was a "golden age" for Sci-Fi movies. Them, It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, The Thing, Godzilla, The Fly, and so on. I can name quite a few more, but I'm sure you get my point. I was born near the end of the 50's, so, unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to see them in the theater. I love them all, though. A good movie along the same lines is "Matinee'" (1993) with John Goodman. It's about a similar type movie, shown during the Cuban missile crisis.
i was wonderin what this was the only reason i know about it was when i was studying for a science test and i turned on the wrong page so i thought i might just look it up. pretty old 1954 looks kinda cool though
@tobar1p In actuality the movie "Starship Troopers" was originally just a script called "Bugs". But when it came time to sell the movie they fleshed out plot holes by tacking on information from Heinlein's book and changed the name to "Starship Troopers". Which is why there are power armours in the movie like there are in the book, the power armours only work their way in by the third installment in the series.
By far the best of the big bug movies! It was going to be filmed in color and in 3D but at the last moment the studio choosed to film it in black and white.I think the black and white filming makes the film better, the ants seem more real and dangerous.
alot may be said for the sound design of this film. it has been sampled a million times, and rightfully so.

This film was an inspiration for James Cameron's "Aliens."
1. The queen
2. her eggs
3. The little girl whose family was killed
4. The little girl's doll head like Newt's.
5. Flame throwers
6. Attacking the nest in the desert which resembles planet Acheron from Aliens.
7. The army fighting in the sewage system which resembles the Heat exchange coolers from Aliens.
8. The build up to seeing the ants just as the build up to seeing the Aliens.
I own both Aliens and Them but they're both great.

I've saw this movie when I was still a little kid and now have the DVD. Great movie... I wonder what they could do today if they had a remake with modern special effects and CG... I can only hope... :D

I object to the way ants are characterized as horrible, terrifying, hideous nightmarish creatures and spawners of teribble progeny

I remember watching this movie on AMC back when I was little. It was so awesome yet scary at the same time when the ants make those terrifying noise.

LysergicNox 1 year ago
the great thing about this classic wasthat they had to construct those giant ants in that size for real ...no CG here, and the actors were really scared of being in scenes with THEM
wraith13 1 year ago
lol fallout 3 had a quest named those! where you had to kill a bunch of ants

All things considered, I'm guessing Earth Defense Force 2017 took a good bit of inspiration from this.

This is probably the movie that inspired Starship Troopers.
Adrillius 1 year ago
@Adrillius Actually Starship Troopers is based on a novel by Robert A. Heinlein

@tobar1p Losely!

@tobar1p Very loosely based, however.
Limbach17 1 year ago
@tobar1p though I believe the novel came out after this movie (I might be wrong on this front), so it's still possible.

@tobar1p THOSE!
serdarguy12 11 months ago
@tobar1p In actuality the movie "Starship Troopers" was originally just a script called "Bugs". But when it came time to sell the movie they fleshed out plot holes by tacking on information from Heinlein's book and changed the name to "Starship Troopers". Which is why there are power armours in the movie like there are in the book, the power armours only work their way in by the third installment in the series.

@Adrillius Starship Troopers is a soft porn movie about fascists who happen to be fighting some bugs. Them is just a really good B-movie.

By far the best of the big bug movies! It was going to be filmed in color and in 3D but at the last moment the studio choosed to film it in black and white.I think the black and white filming makes the film better, the ants seem more real and dangerous.
