this 80s hair metal is laughable but gregs gtr lines were so far above the genre. i remember him before the howe 2 stuff when he did his solo album on shrapnel and he was impressive out of the gate.
this band was so good. saw them live back in the day on the strip.
their problem was they never wrote a hit single that could expose them to the general public. They should've picked a good cover song(like VH did) made a kick ass version of it.
this is my cousins band back way when....my cousin is the bass player his name is vern parsons....he married my cousin sherri....love this shit alot!!!!!
@SamboRayJr dude think bout it ok.....he married my cousin...therefore he WAS NOT MY COUSIN....when he married my cousin sherri then he became my cousin you DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@purplebuttrfli haha that's what I assumed and I was only joking but I'm glad that you've been stewing over my smart ass little comment for the last 6 months. It makes me feel quite powerful. Thank you very much.
@SamboRayJr haha well for your info i want stewing over your comment for the past 6months.....i dont get on here all like that...only to look for music to listten too...so think what you want an im glad i made you happy.....LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
this is the shit! wish greg would go back to his old days, he could make the best rock/metal album, cmon greg, just for the old school fans, and also some new fans
I had an awesome black guitar teacher once who was racist about this band because he would always say "They were a black Van Halen and Greg out did Eddie on guitar and his bro out did David on vocals, but just because they were black they weren't as popular" And I agree with them being better but the songs these guys wrote were no Panama or Ain't talkin' bout love lol sadly they could only pump out generic 80's sounding hair metal
@Gibsonrocker89: Without VH, Howe II wouldn't even sound like this. They based their style on classic VH. You can't really compete with a more popular brand that you copy even if you do perform better. As for black rock bands being less popular, your teacher was right. Black rock bands have always had a harder time being accepted, despite writing great music. Bad Brains are an amazing band but have never gotten their due and are name-checked by lots of other bands they've influenced.
back in the day, they coulda called this album Van Halen 3 and many would have believed it and been stoked...except greg is quite a bit more fretboard knowledgeable than EVH
I saw Howe II at the Avalon niteclub in Chicago as a teen in 1990, and Greg's playing was simply awe inspiring. Don't hate on his bro too much, he was doing what was exactly expected of every other singer in the late 80's (David Lee Roth inspired wardrobe, "rockin'" stage banter, etc.)
If you dudes dissected this and many other solos by Greg on those 2 HOWE II albums you MIGHT conclude that they are some of the greatest rock/metal solos EVER recorded in the hardrock/metal period from 86 to 90...my opinion is that they are!!
From What I remember from Gregs Howe II Days Now Hear This AND High Gear were pretty good for the stuff coming out then. Its all marketing which fortunately AND UNfortunately escaped Greg. I would much rather see him in the main stream as a popstar though he deserves that fortune. I did Love bad racket kick it all over and introspect VERY much though.
Yeah guess so man Hendrix,Beck,Page ,Blackmore,Uli Jon Roth but him and Randy roads pretty much started the whole shred thing in the eighties, they brought different hi tech(for then) techniques into the world and others evolved from that.
Early 70's? More like the late 70's early 80's. He was still honing his technical virtuosity. He came along after Van Halen & Rhoads gained mainstream recognition. As great as Shawn was I wouldn't consider him their musical peer during that era. He was just an young upstart at that point.
Don't get me wrong with this one because I'm not trying to sound like I'm on some kinda' high horse, but many of the great jazz guitarist were playing at breakneck tempos long before any of those guys. They just don't play in a rock style.
And if we wanna get real technical, one could even say Eddie copped a ton of stuff from early Holdsworth, and even guys like Jan Hammer. Ever heard the song "Quadrant 4" by Billy Cobham? Sounds like Hot For Teacher.
yeah man most guys I talk with that like greg all say Introspection is his best album, and I'm inclined to agree -- though his debut solo record is awesome too.
Greg you are AWESOME my friend!

Yeah Eddie was the pioneer and guys like Greg,Paul Gilbert and yngwie took that shred style to higher technical platforms.
But Eddie still pioneered that shit greg just took it further.
kgtbest 3 years ago
there were people that were doing it WAY before Eddie ;)

indeed. Even Shawn Lane was shredding early in the 70s. But yeah, Eddie and Randy really brought it to the public's eye.
