Why is God "the ultimate concern"?? I get so frustrated hearing this over and over again from her. We have global starvation, warring zones and a **** meteor might be heading for earth. And still we have to talk about Gods influence???
So I think I've figured it out. Whenever Jean has heard a brillant person talk, she assumes that they are just speaking non-sense and she thinks "if I sound like that then I will sound brilliant", what she didn't realize is that most rational people can understand other rational people, she just isn't one of them.
Well, I think what Jean actually means is "I'm glad we're living through the times where spirituality and science can have a meaningful dialogue to try and break through closer to the truth."
It was well put and it demonstrates clearly the extent of the contribution spirituality can make:
It will make you feel good but won't really get you anywhere.
Deepak's another Boteach to me. Lot of fluff but little else. His contribution to this debate is to remind others to be careful on semantics.
Few films with a deliberate comedic intention have induced the degree of humor and mirth as this set of 12 videos...... when Faulty Towers is on loan to a friend I will always have this!
After watching all 12 parts, I am left with one quandary;
Who invited the crazy cat lady? She really stood out as not belonging in the discussion. I'm sure there were other women who would have actually been capable of meaningful participation in the actual discussion at hand.
I think what Harris said about Jesus in incorrect. There are many people in the world today, and probably even in that room, who can't display some of the values he did. Look at the raging debate in the United States about universal healthcare and the incredible pettiness manifested by it. What would Jesus think of that, given what we know of him? Or the way many of us demonize people in prison when he talked about visiting them.
BAHAHAHAHA GO TO 3:25 she's like the Mrs Bucket of religious debate, completely irrelevant and meaningless with every comment hahahha - great stuff, might make an animated GIF of this
@yackon4game - i think he tried really hard to give everyone a turn, but he didn't hold the speakers to an expectation of integrity. he allowed deepak to insult and attack his co-speakers personally, which he should have interrupted and prevented. he also, i should admit, allowed michael and sam to consistently miss the point that deepak was personally insulted by the words "woo-woo" (obviously very hurtful to him) and that his values were neglected in the conversation about his language...
I get this unnerving feeling that all atheists begin with the erroneous belief that God is fundamentally unjust. Thus, they find solace in their sincerely adamant proposition that God simply does not exist. Is any serious person interested in expanding on this?
@ibzzibrahim I think that is a reasonable feeling. I think it may be possible that some atheists believe that God is unjust but believers obviously believe that God is 100% just and loving. From the debates and ideas I've heard it seems to make quite a bit more sense to think that God is unjust and cruel than to think he is Loving. Atheists can at least point to some reasons on how unjust God is where as it seems all believers can really say is that God "just is" loving, caring etc...
@ibzzibrahim - yes. i agree that it is common for atheist speakers to mistakenly neglect a direct conversation about the values intrinsic to belief systems (including claims about supernatural beings including gods). what they should do, i think, is focus in on the fundamental immorality of claiming that right and wrong come from obedience to supernatural commands. this is a horrible idea! our morality springs from our common humanity and our social nature. obedience is not morality!
I often experience this or some version of theists describing atheists in some way as "rejecting" their particular god because we think he is unfair and mean. This is as far from truth as you can get. The god of the Bible is indeed a monster. However, it is the concept that is rejected simply based on lack of evidence.
What deepak says at the start is so fucking bullshit. Anyone that has studied biology will know how much more amazing nature is than what we just experience. Knowing just how intricate the workings of our cells are only enriches the great phenomenon that is life.
@ had0406 ; it's not that religion isn't "good".. it's that its bullshit. once you've come to grips with the fact that we're floating through a border-less expanse for no apparent reason, then you can get on with the existential reality. there is NO pragmatic reason to believe in soul, afterlife, or spirituality in any sense. Your just here and not for long.. no particular meaning, purpose or sentiment.
THEY DONT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE FUTURE OF GOD ONCE EVERYONE REALIZES THE BASIC POINT THAT RELIGION IS NOT GOOD. SHOULD THAT NOT BE THE POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION? SO THAT THEY CAN GIVE AN ANSWER TO US PEOPLE WHO ARE BEYOND RELIGION ALREADY, SO THAT WE CAN USE WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD US TO BETTER OUR/EVERYONES LIFE. ?
yeah we understand that old religion styles are archaic, irrelevant and detrimental..BUT WHAT DO WE DO NOW!? Even if all these smart people meet to discuss what we should do now...how should the people know what to do? WHAT SHOULD WE DO/what should we think/how should we implement that in order to change the world and make it better? What should we do BEYOND recognizing that we need this change to occur!? THAT WAS NEVER ANSWERED IN THE SLIGHTEST. Help the normal people out with what to do
If we found God today it would most likely scar our fragile little minds that fail to experience anything beyond the physical, so it God waits till we come to the brink of self induced destruction or until we are strong enough to still be human along side of it. If you were God(which we are) would you reveal yourself to your creation before it found it's own meaning? The problem is few are ready to be human God's, and are seen by our own as contamination. I long for when we are ready to change.
An honest Theist does not and has never existed. The religious lie both intentionally and unintentionally. To lie to one self, is the foundation of blind faith.
The problem with Jean and Deepak's arguments is that they never and never are willing to give their precise definition of god. I think that is what is meant by "fuzzy language," no one knows what the hell you are talking about; as if they attempt to support their argument through deliberate confusion.
my deepest respects for Harris and Shermer. It takes a lot of strength to remain polite with that clown Jean on the same stage. They deserve a special "thank you" from the organisers for not pulling faces when she speaks, and blasting "Jean what the fuck are you talking about?!" what an insult to them to put her on the same stage.... if they put a "debate with houston" on their CV, it might actually reduce their credentials...
Jean: "and that we are in that tremendous time in which these are the times and we are the people who will profoundly make a differences whether we grow or die, and part of it is part of what we've been seeing today, which is the exploration into the meaning, the purpose, the dynamic, the becoming of that which we have called god."
@sidewinderxx I love this discussions but they always fuck it by having somebody like jean... Please notice that I didn't even feel like using a fucking capital letter when I wrote her name. fuck her!
@sonykroket Well, it seemed like you were criticizing her on the validity of her argument by making fun of her drinking, or why would you even have mentioned it? If I brought up Hitchens' drinking on one of his videos with a line like yours, I wouldn't get 24 thumbs up, that's for sure.
@sonykroket Well, now you've decided to switch the argument to where it might have validity - the actual content of what she said. But just attacking her for being a drunk isn't going to cut it. Your claim about alcoholism is questionable - it creates as many problems as it 'amplifies' other tendencies. Also, Hitchens said a lot of clueless and stupid things about the war in Iraq, if you want to argue that.
@Evasen "Just cos you don't see anyone when you stare out your window doesn't mean nothing is there"
It also does not mean someone IS there. To assume something without indication of that something is called imagination. If you look out your window and see a barn should you assume a dragon is out there? Not without good reason.
"Mystery is an component to life"
and preserving a mystery for its own sake is self-imposed ignorance. Mysteries should be investigated....rationally.
@Evasen "We are a creation, therefore there must be a Creator."
This is a deeply flawed concept. Each of us was "created" by our parents via natural biological processes we understand quite well. No cosmic entity is required for this. To label us "creations" simply to semantically invoke the necessity of a "creator" is nothing more than a philosophical vocabulary shell game.
Jean can recite a thousand page of a thousand books... yet nobody understood a damn thing she's talking about... Why? because she's comfortable making up her own fucking language... LOL.
Deepak Chopra is a dope! I get the impression he is such a clown because he can be. Him, kicking back and enjoying all the money he has made from a similar room full of suckers.
"Whence this creation has arisen – perhaps it formed itself, or perhaps it did not – the one who looks down on it, in the highest heaven, only he knows – or perhaps he does not know."
Okay so this lady panelist likes poetry, etc but what does it prove or show? Whenever we are having serious discussions we should use evidence and logic, all other things like beautiful prose/poetry are accessories. Would the lady like a jury in judgement over her listen to someone talk as if they were an actor in a Shakespeare play or would she want the jury to listen to them talk facts and logic? Beautiful poetry is inspiring and emotionally uplifting but what does it have to do with answers.
Wow. I cannot believe I actually made it to clip 12/12. It helped having skipped the lady, so kudos to all who pointed that out. Thank you @AtheistMediaBlog for putting this up. It learned a lot about the debating techniques and way of reasoning of obscurantists!
So if someone (me) believes that government should not get involved in marriages of any kind...then they are "lying to themself". If someone doesn't believe in "democracy" (majoritarianism)...but instead believes in limited government...they are "lying to themself".
Harris is the most eloquent speaker, but falls into that same position lots of people do "but organised religion is bollocks" yes, it is, but can more open equiry into consciousness please.
Jean Houston really does come across as nothing but an actress.... She does speak eloquently... but everything she says is scripted and most of it a metaphor for something fictional...
I half wished her to say ''for pity sake... let's eat some cake''...
@Silva1n1 she is too philosophical, she speaks eloquently and what she says sounds intelligent and nice, but it doesnt really have any application, even chopra would try to be specific, shes just trying to sound intelligent and intentionally being metaphoric, but it just ends up being some vague hippie sounding shit that really doesnt apply in real life anymore, she certainly didnt fit in this debate, or would fit in any debate like this, dont know why they had her
Lady you will all die like dogs, and none of you have said anything profound or enlighten, that even compares to the sayings of Jesus. May God have pity on your miserables souls.
women are emotional nutcases, fat men are stupid especially if they talk with a idiotic sounding accent. Healthy looking men who speak clearly about things are to be trusted.
When I listen to Jean I can't shake an image of her head cracking open and some type of alien proto-plasm oozing out and down her face while she continues babbling unaware that the gasping audience is doing anything other than listening to her enthralled
I'll have two pints of whatever she's drinking so long as I can get to work in the morning. When she has toothache does she go to the dentist or pray to the great unknown?
WTF was she talking about? Team woo woo does not even know that they are out of their depth in this debate. I can only gather that they subjectively feel that god is some kind of unknowable etherial smoke that only exists in the spaces between scientific knowledge. I'm cool with that right up until people form in and out groups based on these teachings and start flying planes into buildings.
@747777 LOL but christ is a creation of man. So who has wisdom and who is foolish, the creator or the imagined? I agree with Sam when he mentions that we have more access to information then the people who lived 2-3k years ago. There is no mystery that gods are man made. Just look at them all and see how they have evolved and borrowed from other cultures and their gods. All we have to do is google gods from different times in our history to see this truth and conclude we made them not them us.
2:35 Epic -"Ohhh fuck , here we go again . Shut the fuck up stupid cunt!"- moment !

I think one of the greatest tragedies of modern times is that Jean Houston wasn't cast as Professor Trelawny in the Harry Potter films
LudvigIndestrucable 7 months ago
@LudvigIndestrucable Omg!! Your right, she practically IS Trelawny!

Beautiful poetry is inspiring and emotionally uplifting but what does it have to do with answers.
stephenblackman2003a 7 months ago

Jean "We got a problem"-Houston
sonykroket 8 months ago
Jean Houston really does come across as nothing but an actress.... She does speak eloquently... but everything she says is scripted and most of it a metaphor for something fictional...
I half wished her to say ''for pity sake... let's eat some cake''...
Silva1n1 8 months ago 37
@Silva1n1 Hahah that was hilarious. Thank you for that laugh.
youngs1ncere 7 months ago
@Silva1n1 she is too philosophical, she speaks eloquently and what she says sounds intelligent and nice, but it doesnt really have any application, even chopra would try to be specific, shes just trying to sound intelligent and intentionally being metaphoric, but it just ends up being some vague hippie sounding shit that really doesnt apply in real life anymore, she certainly didnt fit in this debate, or would fit in any debate like this, dont know why they had her
wheresmywhiskey85 7 months ago
@wheresmywhiskey85 Im guessing they had to put a woman up there and shes the best they could get.

When I listen to Jean I can't shake an image of her head cracking open and some type of alien proto-plasm oozing out and down her face while she continues babbling unaware that the gasping audience is doing anything other than listening to her enthralled

jonjoe1000 9 months ago
WTF was she talking about? Team woo woo does not even know that they are out of their depth in this debate. I can only gather that they subjectively feel that god is some kind of unknowable etherial smoke that only exists in the spaces between scientific knowledge. I'm cool with that right up until people form in and out groups based on these teachings and start flying planes into buildings.

Are you saying Jesus knew more about the universe?
Jammed9000 9 months ago
@747777 LOL but christ is a creation of man. So who has wisdom and who is foolish, the creator or the imagined? I agree with Sam when he mentions that we have more access to information then the people who lived 2-3k years ago. There is no mystery that gods are man made. Just look at them all and see how they have evolved and borrowed from other cultures and their gods. All we have to do is google gods from different times in our history to see this truth and conclude we made them not them us.
