when i was little my father had me watch this for the first time. and afterwards he asked me, "if you lived in that itme, and met The Elephant Man how would you react?" my answer was honest and from the heart. I said "I WOULD be frightnened at first, but that is only because i don't know what to think. so if my personality would be the same in that life as it is in this, i would want to educate myself by spending some time with him. after all ignorance id fear in my opinion" i was about 11.

I watched this movie as school project when it first came out. It disturbed me so much not because of the way John Merrick looked but the way he was treated. Its a beautiful portrayal of one mans triumph of those who would be so cruel. Im 45 now and the story still moves me to tears. Every school should show this movie.

@1992VoodooChild His name was actually Joseph - the film was based on Mr Treves' memoirs, in which Treves made the ''deliberate mistake'' in crossing out Joseph, and writing John, above, in his manuscript. There were a few other errors, and some parts of Joseph's real life he didnt know about at all. Joseph never told him for example his mother had died when he was about 11. Anyway, the confusion about Joseph's name continues on, because of it....

But the film is inaccurate, and things happened in the film which (thankfully) didnt happen to Joseph Merrick when he lived. Yes, he was a real person. He was only 27 when he died.At the time no one knew what disease he had - its now believed he had neurOfibromatosis and Proteus syndrome together.Look on the net if you want to learn more about JOSEPH CAREY MERRICK. :)
