Just heard a new version of this on Ultima Thule podcast. I think the original is the best or at least I enjoy the 'computer' voice with its harmonics. There are longer versions as well with different versions of the computer voice. This one, the original, sounds more etherial to me, but that's just a matter of taste.
OMG! this woman is a genius. She was already speaking back in 1989 what we would be doing in the future, what we all do, spending hours and hours in front a new friend - the computer. I turn to my computer as a friend. I LOVE YOU KATE!
If the new version of Kate's song Deeper Understanding has been made by Kate Bush herself, I have no doubt that it will be no crap but something beautiful, artful and original. I know almost every song of her and there was never a song of her that I did not like. Kate Bush is a treasure that remains a treasure.
Kate loves to suprise us. How many people would have guessed this would be Kate's next single, 22 years after it was released? Mind you, I've even more relivant today than it was then. I can't wait :)
@silgen it certainly is. King of the Mountain was 10 years old when she released it. Deeper Understanding will be well over 20 years... perhaps the next single will be Passing through Air!
Regardless, its great to have some Kate News!!!! Looking forward to this single and album
It SEEMS like its ahead of its time, but people don't realise that the internet is now 21 years old.
Weird, huh? Some people think its only been since 2000, but its for sure been around since then. I remember it existing when I was in grade school, the early 90s.
An almost Prescient song from Kate (written in 1989). But Hey, No surprise - She understands the human heart better than any pyschiatrist/psychologist ever will ! Funnily enough Isaac Asimov predicts something very similiar in his ROBOT/FOUNDATION novels...An increasing need and dependancy on our Computers/AI's/Robots until we can barely form any relationships with other humans (The Spacer Colonists). And the robot's choose to remove themselves from our 'known' history, for our own good !
Compuserve interlinked to the Arpanet/Internet in 1988 or 1989. Many universities were connected in the early 1980's. And of course BBS's were popular around in the early 1980's. Marc Andressen wrote the first GUI web brower called Mosaic in college. Microsoft licensed it. Marc went on to form Netscape and said web browser. When MS cut off Netscape's air supply, NS open sourced its code and it became Firefox. Ha ha ha MS!!!
I discovered Kate Bush with the vid "Sensual World" and needed the album right away, and it remains one of my favorites. What's amazing is that this song stood out more after the internet did come along in the mid-90's.
I got my hotmail account in the summer of '96, and only got into Kate Bush two years before that. It's amazing that she saw where things were going, even if the internet wasn't around yet.
Feels like yesterday when I used to play The Sensual World album over and over and over.....lovely song. The Bulgarka chanting is so hypnotic. The drumming technique is probably influenced by Peter Gabriel-type songs and who has been her friend for a very long time.
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it - the sense of loneliness and isolation and need for 'deeper understanding' just hits me right in the heart...
Is this the 1st song ever written about the internet? That's definitely what she's referring to, the early bulletin boards I think. Is their an earlier song about the internet?
Actually it is about falling in love with one's computer.. Or to a computer program to be exact. The song mentions "picking up the phone", but that actually back in the day meant breaking up an internet connection, when modems used the phone line so you could not use the phone to make a call; someone picking up the headset of a phone cut off the connection, which was a great way to piss off someones brother or dad.
I'd wager the line is even a reference to acoustic modems, which you had to couple with a phone's handset receiver in order to establish a network connection. Wayyyy old school.
Hey! Some of us still have dial up connection! Out in the boonies of Canada. It doesn't generally disconnect the internet now to pick up the phone but it did in our old house a couple years ago.
for me, one of the most singularly devastating tracks in her oeuvre... those backing vox send it so far over the top. elements of the production (esp. the drums) sound a little dated 20 years on, but do nothing to stop the genius in full bloom here. amazing, amazing song.
Kate is ahead of her time as usual,I know that scares some folks, but tell me why? Is it that she has a DEEPER UNDERSTANDING like the song states:):):) So tutta bella chin chin chente anni salute caio:):):)!!
Not sure what the Trio is singing (I don't understand Bulgarian), but it sounds like Kate is singing, alternately, "I hate to leave you" and "I hate to lose you."
Thank you. One of my favourite Kate Bush songs. The Trio Bulgarka voices are truly amazing also. Thanks for the lyrics too...I think quite reflective of our current internet culture so to speak and to think she wrote the
Yes it is quite startling how it was written nearly 20 years ago, when the Internet didn't even exist (I think), but this song is so reflective of today's internet culture, which largely seems to alienate people from the world.
