As I was reading your comment, there came to my mind the greek gods - they often acquire an earthly figure (humans, animals) and meet the mortals. Maybe you could take a look in greek mythology!
I never liked Handke -and I do not like him still-, but this film made me want to understand eternity. It was such a strange and moving experience, that I have not forgotten this movie ever since.
