I've never had to do that. I run Ubuntu 8.04 and when it's wired, it just runs. Wireless was a bitch cause my card doesn't work natively in Linux, but like anything Linux, screw around with it enough and it'll work.

thats the only complaint i have about linux. getting hardware to work. but it has gotten so much better over the years i almost cant complain anymore

Most distros autodetect wired and wireless connections these days. It's very much plug and play now.
