The reason for the video is to give my junior female athletes how to swing. Most important is having the right elbow draw back then lead to target. Also with rolling the palm over the ball with the fingers finishing at the forearm. If you've seen young females try to attack a volleyball they tend to Try to "hit" the ball with the heel of their hand and a low elbow.
The guy teaching was the top OH in Europe for a # of years He wasn't aware he was being tape.
yes, i suppose that puts a top spin on the ball, but most strikes with top spin on the ball involves a super hard hit , where u contact the ball on the top.
i suppose u can do a spike and purposely put top spin on it like this if ur wrist can snap beyond the speed of sound? lol
or otherwise its just a roll shot, where this technique could be used, but the ball would be easily picked up eh?
though the snapping of the wrist is correct... the arm movement is pretty horrible... not by all means but the main thing of a "top spin" is simply snapping of your wrist through the ball... he's demonstrating with the arm (elbow to be exact) being bent... wrong wrong teaching...
-top spin : always hit a ball on top of forehead with your hands unbent with the snap of your fist following through the first instant contact of the ball.
Research by USA Volleyball and the national teams has clearly demontrated that the snap of the wrist does not put top spin on the ball. Slow motion video analysis shows that the ball has already rebounded off the hand by the time the wrist snap occurs. Top spin is applied by striking the top of the ball, nothing else. Wrist snap is no longer taught by US National Team coaches.
@hrvernick Top spin is applied by striking the upper-top "contact" first (if not more force) than the lower-bottom contact (the palm) hence making the ball spin. The contact on the top of the ball itself doesnt make the ball spin. Hence why the snapping of the wrist is a must for the spin itself; top-spin.
So the snap-wrist does in fact put 'top spin' on the ball, since the main point of snapping your wrist is to contact the upper-whole-contact first.
i agree with everyone that said this is the best video of the topspin. I looked everywhere, but this was the best. its trial and error. its not slow and confusing. :)
you keep droping your shoulder.. teach them to use more upper body strength then all shoulder to maximize your power and your control.. and the arm is a little to low, stretch it out to get full potential of your swing
The best video on youtube for showing the actual movements involved in how to put topspin on a volleyball. Descriptions such as "follow-through" are totally misleading unless you understand the arm motion, contact point and wrist snap. In fact, as you can see in the video (59 seconds), one way to learn might be best to eliminate "follow-through" from the equation, and inserting that portion only after the wrist snap is learned.
I'm not sure why you would have an issue with the video. first, it's not me, it's one of the DI coaches during warmup. Two, I put the video there so my players could watch and understand the arm movement required to hit with top spin.

your right but the hitter could still use this shot if for example they were a low jumper or if a set was too high

@lead111 Maybe for you my friend, but not for everybody because if that was true, the video wouldn't exist because it's showing someone how to do it.
