  • wow. 4.1

  • Love it Chris!! <3 You are so talented at making smooth vids in AW. Wish there were more online. What I'd love to see is for someone to make a vid visiting some of the more famous places in AW. Not just screenshots with music but actual film footage smoothly traveling through the more beautiful areas. The old stuff is nice for nostalgia but doesn't go over well with potential new visitors checking out scenes of AW for the very first time.

  • @Thelioness62 I'm hoping to do that over the next year with SW City and some surrounding areas my friends have built. We'll see!

  • I use to be so addicted to AW 10-11 years ago...Still can't believe it was that long ago...I built a cool home...I wonder if it's still there...lol. I remember the bots you could run too that was awesome.. I had a bot for 'paintball' so whenever someone was clicked on they got kicked and a paintball mark was put there.

  • @Anngryfrkkinguy Yup it's still there. I remember paintball! :D

  • I used to play it for a few years, I even had my own world, but ye, now I have a Mac... thanks for this video!

  • @otacs2 You're welcome. I hear they might release an X11 version of AW for Mac eventually. Have no idea when, just saw screenshots of it earlier this year.

  • @chrisw10 I played the "Europe" version of aw, I already know where to spend my money on when they have the mac version. Haha, thanks for letting me know!

  • is this game appropriate for pre-teens like 11-14

  • @AnimeLover4503 Yes it's fine. There are parental controls in the settings that you can use to keep them out of certain worlds. All worlds are rated, G, PG, PG-13, R, or X.

  • @AnimeLover4503 ha, im 15 so that means your a baby to me :P

  • Used the ActiveWorlds on a dialup connection. Never fully subscribed so my Avatar was the tourist with a camera. What a fun time I had there, exploring, flying around interacting with other users via chat. Neat how you can build towns and stuff.

  • it looks deserted

  • @787ivan well the focus of the video is on the types of environments you can build, not on the people who use AW. And It's a lot of land I'm covering in a world the size of California. It's not going to be filled with people at all hours of the day. That's why there's no people in the video.

  • I use AW and its an incredible thing for artistic expression.

  • I never noticed how impressive the James River falls are.

    bigass waterfall indeed.

  • is it possible to run Active Worlds under Mac OSX? Not with Bootcamp!

  • @YohaneRockett Not yet, but they might be working on it.

  • @chrisw10 use crossover games

  • Welcome, Jen!

  • WOW im Jen2009 From active worlds i joined before and ive never bden to SW city...cool lol

  • whats better..Second Life ot Active Worlds? I am currently on SL..and I am looking for a new place to go to

  • This is what SecondLife looked like many many years ago

  • @LePoseurVegan What do you expect from a program that is 15 years old? I was using Active Worlds back in 1998 and the visuals have not changed drastically since then aside from zones and particle effects. I'd say that AW has managed to stand the test of time in terms of its graphics. They really aren't that terrible considering their age.

  • @Doomstink Uh..yeah...My point exactly. SL used to look like AW does not but SL has continued to advance and grow where as AW still looks exactly the same. But if you're a builder then AW would be a great place to do that since there are no people to get in your way. Either way ..Have Fun :-))

  • I live in active worlds too

  • So this is just a poor-man's version of Second Life? Really, what's the point?

  • Why don't you download it and find out :p

I'd rather play activeworlds instead of second life any day...

  • I would not compare AW and SL. At least i think that AW is 3D chat program, building etc is just some extra.

  • I would disagree. Chat is extraneous. The software was built from the ground up to be builder-centric.

  • it wont work for me O_o

  • ah. Active Worlds the best VR Ever that I downloaded in 2005.I still play it :)

    Active Worlds Rocks!

  • i love this game

i miss the world mutation ='(

  • ITS NOT A GAME!

  • this game is really fun

the Cy awards are november 9th

  • SW where is this is Alpha world? I've never SEEN anything like this in AW ever. I guess I haven't been on in about 6 years. Wow... i'm impressed.

  • I mean the falls.. I know where SWcity is

  • WELL IF YOU DO TELL OTHER PEOPLE

  • SW LOL I wondered what you sounded like..

This is Ashley. 352505 or 356765

  • Yes Chafe, in the Active Worlds browser, click the folder icon on the upper left, click the worlds tab and go to "AW". Then type ^jump swcity. There is a Swiki billboard there at ground zero, click it to see geography info.

  • jump swcity dont work

  • can u go here if ur a tourist

  • Yes, you can go everywhere here as a tourist. In fact, there is an entire role playing game throughout the exploration area you see. Tourists can play this game completely for free. Just go to interactive(dot)swcity(dot)net

  • ggg

  • why didnt u show ur avatar

  • Because the point of the video was to show what can be built within Active Worlds, it didn't cross my mind.

  • l0ol nice vid chris

  • This game looks sweet, downloading now.

  • one big ass waterfall XD

  • Man, this game consumed 3 years of my adolescent life.

Played it when I was 11 and quit at 14 after my parents finally had enough of me playing it instead of doing homework, lol.

    I'm 21 now.

Made so many things and so many friends on it.

I'd love to try and get into it again but I don't think it's aged too well.

  • I know exactly what you mean. For years I made a home for myself, just to leave it. Now I can't imagine how things are ... the graphics and interactions were nice back then ... but now I don't think I could stomach how bad it is. Now if they could utilize a new engine of some form .. that would be an amazing feat.

  • Second Life and There are pretty much the new Active Worlds of this day and age.

My imagination went out the window the second I got into Jr. High so these games just aren't my thing anymore.

But, I do look back at those years quite fondly.

  • @xlucidx Sounds like you were playing at the same time as me. I joined up in 1998 and I'm 22 now. I spent three years building stuff and I still occasionally go back and visit my buildings. The first thing you'll notice if you go back to AW is that it is a ghost town compared to when we were playing. There's usually only 20 - 40 people on AW at any given time compared to the 1000+ there used to be. It's sad, because I get a lot of good memories looking back on AW.

  • Active Worlds was great once, but it took them too long to update it. There simply wasnt anything to do. For yoears you could barely interact, and if you werent a citizen (20 dollars a month) you couldnt have a friends list or change the look on your clothing.

SL was smart enough to give the consumers these things free of charge, so they'd keep playing the game. Its interesting to compare their business plans, and who won in the end.

  • What kind of a business plan do you think AW Inc. had?

  • an stupid one

  • Yes "an stupid one" xD

  • trolling is a art.

  • Activeworlds costs $7USD/mth or $70USD per year to be a member and access all open worlds and have contacts, etc. It's free with user restrictions, and for $90USD you can own a world with citizenship. You don't have to buy objects or clothes, the AW object path is free to anyone to use in AW or their own world.

  • whats the first one called?

  • anotherthing u need is some more interactive foods and stuff

  • i like exporeing caves like sharman/ sewers/ llexus caves/ obisanden cove

    i mainly like solveing laberanths

( laberanth is maze or cave with puzzles added in) u need more of those types of areas

  • i like sw city it has nice urban and wildlike landscape im still stuck on quest in the outerlands of sw city (find 4 postcards and win a swiki card) i have all except the lining ravine i like the llexus caves and the scayian mines and the dig area

  • It would be so cool if you could go through AW with something like a SpacePilot!

  • dude u can tlleport if u no aw school u can telly there so ya u can telleport so dont tell us u cant because u can i dont no what ur playing

  • it is hard to understand what you said... but dude, he is not saying you CAN'T teleport, just that you can explore without having to teleport too. Since all of SW City is a continuous land mass.

  • I'd say that I'd rather play second life.

  • trust me this game is classic, second life is crap i played it for a month and hated it

  • I tried playing it but I couldn't figure out whats going on lol. What can you do there that I can't do in second life? Is it fun like "There" is?

  • Second Life I've found to be extremely laggy for me. I don't like how all user input goes through the server before feedback. These are minor problems though.

The big problem, for me at least, is not being able to pay one fixed fee for a year, and suddenly have unlimited land and unlimited objects with which to build. If you wanted to, you could build an entire city on your own, and invite others to build in your city.

  • Im on second life but cannot stomach the fees they charge which are ridiculous! How does AW compare to SL? I would like to be able interact with others can you do that??

  • as far as wars.. I imagine theres worlds for that as well. I stay out of that since Im pacifist.

  • i have only ne question can u drive vehicals

  • In some worlds, like awgate, yes you can. It depends on the world you visit in Active Worlds.

  • umm dude i cant connect i just get a black screen help

  • this is an old video. aw is even more realist. yoou can drive things. carry things.. do tons of stuff you couldnt when this was made. check it out. you can be tourist there as well to try itout.

  • Movers were introduced after zones? I thought both were introduced with 4.1? I might be wrong.

  • LOL, the distance is still pathetic.

  • Actually the viewing distances for user-created objects (not terrain) is about the same as any other platform. It just sucks that there's no way to hide the pop-up. The terrain viewing distance is about 1200 meters or some large number like that. Again, about the same as other platforms. The Alphaworld world is flat though, so you don't see it.

  • Got 2 question. Did you build all that?

    Does it cost?

  • paying is better but there is tourist feature. you dont get many options. but there are some worlds like thebeans you can build in free also. they protect your build in thebeans.

  • When you say protect, do you mean you can have wars?

  • tourist builds are generally deleted. citizen builds are not. in the world TheBeans they try to keep people from deleting any build even as tourist. Occasionally it does still happen though.

  • Second Life is so much better.

  • SL has its advantages. One of AW's is that you can build all of this without spending thousands of dollars a month. I'm pretty sure if you laid out this town on the SL grid it would cover the square area of at least 50 servers.

  • i dont get citzen because i dont have the money

  • You can always be a tourist, which costs no money at all. Go to AWTeen world in Active Worlds, and you can make towns and all sorts of stuff without paying anything at all. It's equivalent to a sandbox environment in Second Life, but with all the land you want.

  • hey swchris u may not remember me but im .TiFFany i go to swcity sometimes to talk to anthony and stuff.sooo cya sometime!

  • oh i have that game on my computer!its fun.i have like 100 friends.espetially Gentle Heart.if you play it ask me,if i'm on active worlds when you are, respond to this comment if you've see girlofthemist on active worlds.thats me!

  • Nice video Chris, I'm gonna show this to all my friends here and see if we can get more interest in AW now haha.

    -Legolas

  • almost like sims i go on it i need cheats!

  • It can be like the sims, except all the drama is a bunch of real people.

  • real what is that?

  • did you amke this land? cuz if u did then im totally getting this game if not, i still will :P

  • Well, I didn't do the programming for Active Worlds, but I do a lot of building in SW City.

  • Everything you see is user-created. Like Chris said, he didn't program the actual browser. It's everything you see in the 3d window that's user-created.

  • i thought your dog ate your mic?

  • He ate my earphones. Can't do skype without earphones or you get feedback loops.

  • Very well done :)

  • Very nice!
