We should take the term Global Warming and Climate Change out of the discussion. What should be discussed is Sea Level Rise. Who cares why the water is rising, it just is.

@mayflowerstein Actually, here in Upstate New York it's snowing lightly now, and what you're referring to are simply cycles in the weather. Most of the time when we don't get snow December or January it hits hard later. Simply undeniable fact. Yes, man is altering the enivronment slightly, but nowhere near as much as greenists think. @Songwriter4God Currently the sun is going through a low period of activity (sun spots have almost vanished). This is likely to be quite short lived statistically speaking, but in the interim, temperatures 'should' be much cooler. CO2 is actually still increasing in the atmosphere, and its trapping more heat. Basically the heater is producing less heat, but our new thicker jumper is keeping us comfy, and still warmer than recent previous years.
@Songwriter4God Climategate was investigated by several agencies which all confirmed there was no intent to deceive the public in matters of science. Yes some personal rivalries were uncovered, but the so called cooling trend just isn't and has never existed.
The cooling trend (hide the decline) was an erroneous data set collected from tree rings which show cooling from the 1950s onwards. Thermometers say that temperatures increased (and they are more accurate right?) so the bad data was fixed.
@digitised If you think i am lying by all means research what i have said, read some climate science, investigate the debunkings of climate skeptics and see what there responses were to their claims. Could they refute the science which countered them, did they ignore it? There is a lot of intentional dishonesty in the denialism, and very little if any in the scientific community. Yes the IPCC and politicians have lied or misrepresented science, done by hard working scientists.

@Songwriter4God Well it is global, for your information ALL weather data from all around the world is collected (mainly by NASA satellites) and average temperatures are calculated for the entire planet. Now if that average temperature increases, it doesn't matter if one city gets snow in summer, global average temperature has increased.
This is why the scientific evidence is so powerful, but deniers lie by saying it has cooled for 10 years when this is the hottest decade humanity has known.

@Songwriter4God Actually scientists do know what temperatures have been like for over 650,000 years because of what is called 'proxies', this can be ice core bubbles, peat bog samples, sediments, tree ring data etc. Very good data can be recovered from this as well as backward calculating orbits, studying other planets and moons etc and seeing what clues they offer.
Thermometer records are a few hundred years old but that doesn't mean scientists have no other avenues.
@Songwriter4God In addition, there were no scientific papers or official statements made in the 1970s relating to any imminent ice age, as i explained to another poster here the stories were nothing more than media sensationalism and not the true words of the scientists who were interviewed. Scientists have stuck with a figure of 20,000 years until the next cyclical ice age and that can be found way back in the literature.
This is because they have longgggg records of reliable data to rely on.
@digitised They know when the last dozen or so ice ages occurred how long they lasted, how much of the earth was frozen, roughly what caused each of them (axial wobble, decreased insolation, decreased albedo, volcanic particulates etc etc) and have a high degree of certainty about this.
You admit you don't know much about the science, but you claim to bizarrely know better and outcome than people that spend their lives studying it.
If you do care about this issue, then learn about it.

@digitised No, I don't claim to know more, I know saying with absolute certainty something in the past happened isn't science though. It's an educated guess, but not science. It's not 100% true nor can it be proven. .Based on things I've read though I have reason to believe "global" warming is no big deal because it's cyclical, as I said, I'm not a climatologist, but I know better than to believe people saying we're killing the planet when we're not. @Songwriter4God well we have managed to raise carbon dioxide levels by 100ppm in less than 100 years. This level of increase has not been even slightly matched in 650,000 years of ice core bubble data and the earths temperature has changed dramatically due to astronomical and geologic reasons during that time. There is no denying we are digging up fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) and pumping it into the air at an accelerating rate, its really as simple as that. CO2 is a blanket we're thickening.
@digitised Yes, but fossil fuels end eventually. This is why in my state we're trying to pass fracking, 'cause it makes cleaner fuel. And, when we can we'll move on to renewable energy. It's just not ready yet. Solar is too expensive still etc. And, more CO2 = more 02, we all [should have] learned the science between photosynthesis, C02 turns into 02, it's not big deal 'cause it just gets turned back into oxygen. A bit of C02 won't kill us when trees aren't going extinct.
Plants absorb carbon, but they can only retain so much. We don't have enough plants to lower carbon.
Think about it. We have increased CO2 by 100ppm, why hasn't your plant hypothesis kicked in and lowered that figure? If you are correct then atmospheric CO2 should not be as high as it currently is.
@digitised I never said it would lower, I said it's no big deal because plants change it into oxygen. And I believe it's algae which is the biggest absorber of CO2 is it not? And isn't "global warming" supposed to make more algae because it's warmer? So theoretically the problem reverses itself in time. Which would explain how it could be cyclical, becuase algae breeds, absorbs, world cools off again, algae dies, repeat. It makes perfect sense.

@Songwriter4God Early 2009 in the UK (where i live) saw snow everywhere, we haven't had such severe snow in decades. But despite such sustained cold weather the average temperatures in the uk for 2009 were still on average the highest they had been to that point. It doesn't matter if one place is cold for one odd moment, its bout the entire picture.
You cannot look out your window and know about global temperature, you need to look out of thousands of windows from all over the world.

There have been dust storms on the surface recently which have lifted up paler surface sands. Underneath the sand and rocks are darker, which increases solar albido.

If you really did honest research into such claims the issue of the day was particulates from pollutants which block out solar radiation in the upper atmosphere.
However the warming effects of man made CO2 actually caught up with and exceeded the cooling effect of pollution, hence we are warming.

There were some 30 papers published in the 1970s outlining the effect of pollutants effect on blocking out solar radiation, there were 70 more illustrating the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide. No scientists said an ice age was coming any time soon (20,000 years was actually stated), that was the media who drew there own conclusions and started 'reporting' that the earths climate would cool due to atmospheric particulates.
@digitised Scientists were no sure at the time how much CO2 would build up compared to the already increasing pollution. Over the years more data poured in and global temperatures have risen decade upon decade.
Never before in over 650,000 years of ice core data has CO2 increased by 100ppm in less than 1 century, this is why our current situation is significant.
That is a scientific conclusion and one which has not been refuted by denialists.

One of the best series i have seen on youtube is by science journalist Peter Hadley (youtube account potholer54) he has examined a science only perspective and examined the arguments and myths put forward by denialists and doubters.

The great thing about this debate is that in the next 10-15 years we will have a definate answer. The earth in my opinion is cooling and will continue cool until at least 2035 due to the solar cycle especially in the northen hemisphere (Mainly western europe) due to blocking pattens changing but i could be wrong. I think that Co2 is only a very small part of what drives world temperture therefore human made global warming exists but is of no consiquence.
Obama pretends to care about the future while all the cronies giggle. They know what they are doing to the World. They are merely laughing at the American people.

@Songwriter4God Currently the sun is going through a low period of activity (sun spots have almost vanished). This is likely to be quite short lived statistically speaking, but in the interim, temperatures 'should' be much cooler. CO2 is actually still increasing in the atmosphere, and its trapping more heat. Basically the heater is producing less heat, but our new thicker jumper is keeping us comfy, and still warmer than recent previous years.

@Songwriter4God Climategate was investigated by several agencies which all confirmed there was no intent to deceive the public in matters of science. Yes some personal rivalries were uncovered, but the so called cooling trend just isn't and has never existed.
The cooling trend (hide the decline) was an erroneous data set collected from tree rings which show cooling from the 1950s onwards. Thermometers say that temperatures increased (and they are more accurate right?) so the bad data was fixed.

Could they refute the science which countered them, did they ignore it? There is a lot of intentional dishonesty in the denialism, and very little if any in the scientific community. Yes the IPCC and politicians have lied or misrepresented science, done by hard working scientists.

@Songwriter4God Well it is global, for your information ALL weather data from all around the world is collected (mainly by NASA satellites) and average temperatures are calculated for the entire planet. Now if that average temperature increases, it doesn't matter if one city gets snow in summer, global average temperature has increased.
This is why the scientific evidence is so powerful, but deniers lie by saying it has cooled for 10 years when this is the hottest decade humanity has known.

@Songwriter4God Actually scientists do know what temperatures have been like for over 650,000 years because of what is called 'proxies', this can be ice core bubbles, peat bog samples, sediments, tree ring data etc. Very good data can be recovered from this as well as backward calculating orbits, studying other planets and moons etc and seeing what clues they offer.
Thermometer records are a few hundred years old but that doesn't mean scientists have no other avenues.

@Songwriter4God In addition, there were no scientific papers or official statements made in the 1970s relating to any imminent ice age, as i explained to another poster here the stories were nothing more than media sensationalism and not the true words of the scientists who were interviewed. Scientists have stuck with a figure of 20,000 years until the next cyclical ice age and that can be found way back in the literature.
This is because they have longgggg records of reliable data to rely on.

@digitised They know when the last dozen or so ice ages occurred how long they lasted, how much of the earth was frozen, roughly what caused each of them (axial wobble, decreased insolation, decreased albedo, volcanic particulates etc etc) and have a high degree of certainty about this.
You admit you don't know much about the science, but you claim to bizarrely know better and outcome than people that spend their lives studying it.
If you do care about this issue, then learn about it.

@digitised No, I don't claim to know more, I know saying with absolute certainty something in the past happened isn't science though. It's an educated guess, but not science. It's not 100% true nor can it be proven. .Based on things I've read though I have reason to believe "global" warming is no big deal because it's cyclical, as I said, I'm not a climatologist, but I know better than to believe people saying we're killing the planet when we're not. @Songwriter4God well we have managed to raise carbon dioxide levels by 100ppm in less than 100 years. This level of increase has not been even slightly matched in 650,000 years of ice core bubble data and the earths temperature has changed dramatically due to astronomical and geologic reasons during that time. There is no denying we are digging up fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) and pumping it into the air at an accelerating rate, its really as simple as that. CO2 is a blanket we're thickening.

@digitised Yes, but fossil fuels end eventually. This is why in my state we're trying to pass fracking, 'cause it makes cleaner fuel. And, when we can we'll move on to renewable energy. It's just not ready yet. Solar is too expensive still etc. And, more CO2 = more 02, we all [should have] learned the science between photosynthesis, C02 turns into 02, it's not big deal 'cause it just gets turned back into oxygen. A bit of C02 won't kill us when trees aren't going extinct.

Plants absorb carbon, but they can only retain so much. We don't have enough plants to lower carbon.
Think about it. We have increased CO2 by 100ppm, why hasn't your plant hypothesis kicked in and lowered that figure? If you are correct then atmospheric CO2 should not be as high as it currently is.

And isn't "global warming" supposed to make more algae because it's warmer? So theoretically the problem reverses itself in time. Which would explain how it could be cyclical, becuase algae breeds, absorbs, world cools off again, algae dies, repeat. It makes perfect sense.

@Songwriter4God Early 2009 in the UK (where i live) saw snow everywhere, we haven't had such severe snow in decades. But despite such sustained cold weather the average temperatures in the uk for 2009 were still on average the highest they had been to that point. It doesn't matter if one place is cold for one odd moment, its bout the entire picture.
You cannot look out your window and know about global temperature, you need to look out of thousands of windows from all over the world.

You really need to catch up on the studies of solar activity (again they are numerous and conclusive), the sun has produced far less heat since the late 1970s, so you cannot say the sun is to blame for any warming on earth, in fact its relative inactivity has held increases in warming back.

If you really did honest research into such claims the issue of the day was particulates from pollutants which block out solar radiation in the upper atmosphere.
However the warming effects of man made CO2 actually caught up with and exceeded the cooling effect of pollution, hence we are warming.

There were some 30 papers published in the 1970s outlining the effect of pollutants effect on blocking out solar radiation, there were 70 more illustrating the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide. No scientists said an ice age was coming any time soon (20,000 years was actually stated), that was the media who drew there own conclusions and started 'reporting' that the earths climate would cool due to atmospheric particulates.

@digitised Scientists were no sure at the time how much CO2 would build up compared to the already increasing pollution. Over the years more data poured in and global temperatures have risen decade upon decade.
Never before in over 650,000 years of ice core data has CO2 increased by 100ppm in less than 1 century, this is why our current situation is significant.
That is a scientific conclusion and one which has not been refuted by denialists.

By which i am referring to peer review scientific literature in which climate scientists are clearly concluding that an ice age is coming.
I will not accept any 'magazines' or 'news reports' i would like to see cold hard scientific papers stating what you claim was the case.

One of the best series i have seen on youtube is by science journalist Peter Hadley (youtube account potholer54) he has examined a science only perspective and examined the arguments and myths put forward by denialists and doubters.
If you spend time to honestly examine the facts you will see that even some of your own points are fatally flawed.

The article misrepresented (with intent) what scientists were saying about particulates, and concluded in the article that an ice age was soon on its way.
This article was retracted and apologies were made on behalf of newsweek who were guilty of sensationalising and misrepresenting simple facts.
No REAL scientific papers predicted any ice age within the next 20k years.

@digitised One of the problems I have aside from the un-ehical-ness (new word! :P) of the greenist movment as I call it, is that things are cyclical. And, they always make it out like it's the end of the world, weather patterns are cyclical. I'm not a climatologist, but I do know that. Not to mention, if it's warming why is it that when everyone else is getting warm in the US Upstate New York is getting more snow than any other time of year? More like regional warming.

@Songwriter4God Well what you are referring too is strictly regional. Looking out of the window doesn't give you a clear indication of what the aggregated data of the whole globes temperatures are doing. This data does however get collected and sadly temperatures have increased decade upon decade.
Ignore the politics and study the science, i don't follow any movements and i don't care for them, i just want the hard facts not the opinions of people who haven't conducted even 1 shred of research.

The great thing about this debate is that in the next 10-15 years we will have a definate answer. The earth in my opinion is cooling and will continue cool until at least 2035 due to the solar cycle especially in the northen hemisphere (Mainly western europe) due to blocking pattens changing but i could be wrong. I think that Co2 is only a very small part of what drives world temperture therefore human made global warming exists but is of no consiquence.
