I love this song, but this was an awful rendition. It was rushed...entirely too fast. The back up singers were too loud and off key. It was nothing like Leroy's original recording.
I guess, but are these guys even singing this song? Their lips don't seem to match much of anything. The song's marvelous, though. I rather prefer Patsy Cline's dirge attitude, though.
I saw him in Cambridge Ontario Canada 1979. When you have waited 16yrs to shake this guys hand. Just a little park, small time gathering. There he was, big as life...
When this song was first released a minister of religion wanted it banned, he said it was obviously about a married guy indulging in adultery, Oh my how times change .
The piggy-back style flip top amp is an old Ampeg vaccum tube bass amp. They made a B-12 and a B-15 but this might be a two speaker model as it looks wider than the ones I've seen.
The lady doing eeeeeeehaw on vocals is from Lafayette, Louisiana. I forgot her name, but I have met her. She is currently president of the Louisiana Country Music Hall of Fame
kpenn0910, the drummers' name is Joel McDuffee, he worked for Leroy for some 11-12 years somewhere in the mid 60's till approx 77. After Joel got off the road with LeRoy he and I worked in a local band around Nashville until approx 2000, and even after that a few gigs until 2006. Joel passed away in 2007, he was perhaps the best pocket drummer I ever worked with. He is still missed!
Thank you so much. My dad was a big CW fan in the early sixties and I KNOW I saw Leroy in person at least twice. I just remembered the drummer because he didnt have slick backed hair and was just constant without bringing a lot of attention to himself (I was a grade school drummer during this time so I focused a lot on drummers). Thank you so much for answering my question. I really appreciate it.
This was live television. Clearly the boys were standing a little to close to the mic. Plus in those days, they did not have the sound boards available now.
'His record of "Walk On By" (1961) was named by Billboard Magazine in 1994 as the biggest country single of all time, based on sales, plays and weeks in the charts. It stayed at number one for nineteen weeks, and in all, charted for 42 weeks, selling approximately three million records.' The above quote is from Wikipedia.
I believe this song was voted the greatest Country song of all time wasn't it? He never really followed this record up with anything near as successful, but he was still a darned good singer. Great clip.
Great song!!!! Why can't this kind of music be around now? I mean it's a bunch of garbage nowadays on the air waves and if it were up to me I'd fine them BIGTIME!!!
Leroy Van Dyke is still performing and sounding as great as ever. leroyvandyke-dot-com Lots of appearances in Branson in 2007. Check out his tour schedule.
Thanks for Posting. I remeber hearing this song a while back. I bet a lot of Todays generation would have a hard time relating to this music (True Country Music).
i like it...
