I highly recommend reading Emmanuel Velikovsky's WORLDS IN COLLISION published in 1950 which also delves into the subject of a past near collision/collision with a planetary body which I think he said caused a part of the planet to be torn away. It's been awhile since I read it so I don't remember exactly. But I think he also said that the Earth was knocked of its axis causing a pole shift.
