  • ... I hope I'm not as afraid when I play D&D for the first time soon! lulz

  • That was intense

  • I like how it caled: The product of your immagination.

  • :08 is that Eric Stoltz lol

  • LIGHTNING BOLT!

  • Y'know,I'm D&D became so wildy popular in the early 80s after that whole Mazes & Monsters crap.

  • Ahh have to love D&D 1 *overpowered Barbarians* lol 2nd is better 3rd is ok and 4th is like a rip off of Scion with some of the levels in it XD

  • I have a D&D contest going on you get a cool prize at the end. Anyway this is a cool commercial.

  • That module, right there, is "Keep on the Borderlands" - Happy days :)

  • I didn't like first edition too much because of the ultra low level limits placed on the demi-humans. Some couldn't even get past level 4 in some classes.

  • first edition rocks! still have those manuals in VG condition and the big cyclopedia. oh the fun i had first learning to play then... had buddies in the Army who played, still have a game every now and again.

  • You're a wizard Harry! :D

  • use your lightning bolt !!!!

  • 1st deition is available now at hobby shops. It's the 1st edition red box.

  • @HaohmaruOfTheWind The red box was originaly 2nd edition, and the new red box thats out is 4th edition rules in the old red box :)

  • Voice over: Ken Nordine.

  • @heine71 thats what I thought, awesome!!!!

  • like the fossil fuel, our imagination is running dry compared to those days thanks to technologies

  • @tkoizumi Children need to get out more!

  • LIGHTNING BOLT

  • @39umbrella- I bet those guys know how to write a grammatically correct, declarative statement.

  • Comment removed

  • @39umbrella i had a master bath yesterday it was so relaxing

  • Jamie Gertz is in the video as well as the actor who plays 'Cameron' in Ferris Beulers Day Off...He is the guy in the teal green shirt/white collar/glasses.

  • Takes me back. Good times.....good times.

  • @39umbrella ....master bath??

  • @frodovader He cleans himself better than anyone.

  • @TheChoujinVirus exactly.

  • and yes.. those geeks grew up to own multi-million dollar companies, homes, cars, and everyone else is still living at home with their mom. lol

  • Yeah. Old school D&D! Back then, we didn't need 25 man raids to down a boss! lol

  • The folks playing this game in the commercial look like authentic players for the time. ^_^

  • The funny thing is this game was really good at building imagination. You needed a wide vision of creativity to really embrace it. Unfortunetly the game suffered big time because the most outspoken people playing D&D at the time were, well, shall we say eccentric.

For years I heard about how only nerds would play this game and yet today millions of people play WOW or Runescape or Everquest which is just like it.

  • @VisionofOrion you know i agree with you on that. WoW, Everquest, Runescape and pretty much ALL RPG's where spawns/clones of D&D.

D&D Was the first RPG game made. and how the history of RPG came about it amazing.

Pretty much all of this start from J.R.R. Tolkien designing what everyone know Lords of the Ring. From there Dave Arnason, and Garry Gygax went on to make D&D Based off the LoTR Setting. then From there RPG where born and went from table top to pc and video games.

  • I'm an English teacher in Taiwan. In about two or three weeks I'm going to introduce RPGs to my ESL students. I'm sure the dialogue will be great. I may even post it here if I have opprotunity to record the sessions. However, there are 19 kids and only 1 of me. Any DMs or GMs out there with tips on running such a large group? DnD is too complex for them, I know this, but I think they would learn a lot of English by playing through a few scenarios and they'll have fun doing it.

  • @guapounggoy I have DMed for a few large groups. The easiest way to handle a group that large is to assign a person or two to be you assistant. The assistant has one job, for example, combat, or controlling NPCs. It does not sound like much but it can take some weight of the DM and allow him to keep the pace of the story moving forward.

  • How do I play this game? i've never really understood it.

  • @pixargod you must read the books

i cant explain it on you tube its not like chess where you can explain it so easily

  • @pixargod

Its "lets pretend" with actions determined by dice rolls.

A "Game master" will describe the game world and story, whilst also making sure the rules are followed.

There are two ways to play: Focus on story and acting, or playing strictly to the rules in the manuals, and using game boards with minatures.

I don't personally play these games, but as a programmer and artist, the world building element is interesting.

  • @pixargod

There is no ''absolute'' way to play D&D. Read the rules, choose a Dungeon Master and a few players, Let the DM start a story for those characters the players have done and this is it !!!

However, remember that rules are ''accessories'' to the fun so you can change them any way you like... also, the main fun is to ''flesh out'' a character by giving him an attitude, a past, emotions and hopes for his future ...

The cornerstone of it all is imagination !

  • If me and my friends were playing this, they would suck out all the atmosphere by making pop culture references and then meta game their way through the dungeon.

  • @somenonimportantguy

thats what i thoght and for the most part it was true

until i relized that the people who were making the jokes wernt realy wanting to play D&D so they dont play with us any more

  • Its Jami Gertz as the girl with pigtails

  • This is based on the board game I think, as opposed to the table top RP game.

As for families, one of my DM's grew up with parents who played since 1st Ed, so naturally, she played with them as a family.

I would hope that my kids (when me and my partner have them eventually) would join in D&D with us as well.

  • That, or they're epic level and feel like beating up on something weaker than them.

  • @AFatNerd42

    lol must have rolled a 20 >.>

  • Huh, I don't remember any red dragons in B2. Those are some tough 1st through 3rd level characters!

  • Check out the gaming table. There's like, what, a single character sheet, a divider, and a page or two of DM notes? Not one bag of Cheetos or a can of Mountain Dew to be seen. There isn't even a pencil anywhere.

    Guaranteed good time, there. XD

  • Those kids gotta be real good to have memorized all those rules.

  • Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning Bolt!

  • Classic goodness!

If WotC would only provide a clear copy of this on DVD, I'd buy it!

We've gotta keep the Old School games alive, mates!

  • The girl with dark hair and pigtails is a young Jaimie Gertz (she was in Lost Boys and a ton of other movies) and the kid in the teal green shirt with glasses is Alan Ruck (he played Cameron in Ferris Beulers Day Off). Love this commercial, really kicks that 'wayback machine' feel when I first started playing D&D. Good stuff.

  • P-Chow!!! Take that 1d6 per level damage (maximum 10d6) and shove it up your spell resistance, red dragon!!

  • the girl with the pigtails is very nice

  • Looks ilke a much user friendly D&D

  • At least the makers of the commercial got their demographic right --- a bigger group of 80s-style nerds, I've never seen. ;-)

  • no in first edition dragons hd r only 9 so they got low hp

  • Holy crap! Basic set with the Otus cover?

    Now THAT'S a old commercial.

    (in after Edition Wars)

  • Old school, no minis... scary! If I had a nightmare about DnD, it would probably look like that! I mena, did they ahve to purposefully pick poeple that LOOK like geeks?

  • That chick with the brown hair is pretty hott....I wouldn't mind if she joined my group.

  • lol

  • Jamie Gertz: Bewildered girl with pigtails. Alan Ruck: Nerdy guy in green sweater. Ken Nordine; the narrator. IMDB these names and see who they are now!

  • nate klergie 5 has dungeons and dragons its really funny haha

  • Yeah, my dad used to play this. He has like.. an assload of D&D stuff.

  • Dude, I think that's Matthew Lillard at the 8 second mark... Crazy.

  • Man i would love to give 1st edition a try...

  • When that chick with the glasses popped up I was like AAAHHH!!! People from the 80's are creepy...

  • 4th also makes it basically pointless to choose one class over the other. Everything is basically equal. You get "powers" every level, and alignment has been changed for no good reason.....me and my friends just stopped playing and gave the books away. It was terrible, and really made more for kids than for adults.

  • 2cd edition includes a skill system, but again I find that it is unnecessary and time consuming.

3rd and 3.5 edition has a TON of rules that are expected to be used and unaltered. Everything is mathematically and scientifically built like a puzzle, if you alter anything game balance is jeopardized.

But you are given a ton of choices in creating a character, almost to much.

4th edition is dumbed down for the MMO gamers. You get very little choice, everyone is equal in power.

  • 3rd ed is great

  • it's not bad. I have a small group of 3rd edit that I play with once in a blue moon. It is just to colorful and combat oriented. Really it is just a combat simulator. But I've had fun.......I guess.....

  • I agree. Like the other editions had Miniatures but....I agree. 3rd edition was only all combat oriented. I had to buy AD&D 1E. Because I wanted to ROLEPLAY! not play Chess.

  • What about any of the other systems limited your ability to roleplay? It's not like roleplaying was banned in 3rd and 4th editions.

  • HAHAHAHAHA!

  • Which is the newest edition, 4th, right? And is any good? If not, which do you recommend?

  • Personally I like 1st edition, but it really depends on what you are looking for, and the Dungeon Master's ability.

But 4th edition is like playing WoW on paper. It's terrible. It's all about getting power and more power, while sacrificing the roll playing aspect.

  • I need one that's best for several friends to play just to have fun.

For instance, we all go into the dungeon together, not exactly as a team, but more as a "safe-in-numbers" deal. Some of us are doing a little role playing, some of us are just here to get loot and Lv up our guys.

The action flows between team-ups and back-stabs as we make our way through the dungeon in search of rare treasure. Its not so much about the world of D&D, its more about the game play and player interactivity.

  • As long as my friends can jump in, have fun ad laughs, and jump out without getting bogged down by stats, then its a good edition. Me and my friends have good imagination, but we wouldn't want to wade through tons of rules or have fun aspects of messing around screwed up by rules. I plan on being the main GM, and as long as I can take time to understand the rules, then translate it quickly to friends without getting them involved in it too much, then its a good edition.

  • 1st edition has the least amount of rules. THe game is quite open ended, and made in a with the intention that the dungeon master will create his own rules and change things that he doesn't like. The raw form of 1st edition doesn't have skills, just classes and stats. You can get expansions that include skills but I found that skills aren't really needed. 2cd edition is just like 1st except that it was altered to be more family friendly, replacing Demon with Tanari, and that sort of thing.

  • Thanks for the info! Could I ask one more? (of course!)

Do you know the best place to buy or order these books and stuff? I saw an 4th Ed box set, thats something that I'm looking for, so I don't have to hunt everything down.

And don't say Ebay unless you can't think of anything else.

  • if you lived in NYC I could point you to forbidden planet. They might have an online store, but I don't know. I'd look for small hobbie shops. The big places are going to have the new crap and the older little places might have the older thing.

One more thing I might add.

You can made a 1st edition character in about 15 mins, the other games can easily take the night just to make a character. I don't know if that means anything to you. I like to just make a chrtr and start playing.

  • wow one lightning bolt to down a red dragon

-.- DND is allot easier back in the day

  • Lighting Bolt does 1d6 per caster level. At max level that would be 216. The dragon looks like a large Red Dragon. They have a hit die of 15d8. That makes a max Hit Point at 120. It also saves at a roll of 4 or higher (which means it will take half damage). So in order to down this dragon with one lighting bolt the DM needs bad rolls, the player needs good rolls, and the player should probably be at a real high level. In OD&D, it was real easy to die. However, it was easy to understand.

  • first edition all the way brother hell ya

  • *High Five*

    First Edition ftw!

  • I've tried third edition and it just isn't the same. 3rd edition is just a combat simulator when it comes down to it. No real fun.

The original game has something to it the newer games just don't. And 4th edition is just unplayable.

  • I'll agree that 4th adition is going to bring the end to dnd (for non WoW fans) and that third edition is a little stiff but I think 3.5 meets a nice medium. (It should have been titled 4 though) I dont think I have ever seen a game including dnd and adnd that has the number of options provided for you that 3.5 did (though the earlier models did make it slightly easier to make homebrew).

  • I still play the 1st edition. With my expanded rules. 1st edition has this archaic feel and look that I like in a fantasy role playing game. This newer stuff, has everything so colorful and modern looking that it ruins the flavor and feel and atmosphere of Dungeons & Dragons. At least for me. But I have played 3.5, and it wasn't all that bad. I have a good time and all. It's just not for me. I've invested way to much time and money in 1st edition.

  • i love dnd, ive played it since 3rd edition...but this ad makes me rofl

  • Don't make me quit the game. Please don't! Somebody save me! You can't do this!

  • lol, props for the humor!

  • I watched the commercial again, with the speakers on, and my cat meowed and ran from the room and my monitor burst into flames.

  • could have been funny if you left the last part out

  • No I don't worship Satan, I was being sarcastic. Although I do like his medical coverage.

  • I love this video, makes me want to try 1st edition. I wonder if there really are groups who play D&D as enthousiastic as that =p

  • @Darksteel85 all over the MFin' world bro!

  • thats the third party version of D&D i own the original books and they werent colrful like that they were gray and brown

  • no wonder people think dnd is satanic, the voice over guy was creepy

  • Thats Cameron from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and the girl with her hair pulled back is in Twister and a sitcom "Still Standing".

  • Wow Alan and Jamie, that's hilarious. Ahhh, that brings back memories of nerdier times.

    Rest in Peace Gary....

  • One thing that amuses me about this commercial is that they are only able to show the contents of the box, thus ONE DM screen, ONE Player's Manual, ONE GM book, ONE character sheet and ONE set of dice... Not sure what those other folks are doing there, then. ;)

  • Is that Jamie Gertz? Wow, she's a D&Der.

  • Wow and Alan Ruck! And I would almost say the DM is Julian Sands. Looks kinda like him.

  • A geeky square peg girl playing DND? Unheard of! :) I think you're right though.

  • And Alan Ruck, "Cameron" from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Those are the two I know for sure.

  • @frodovader I had one now.

  • I think 'Flow-Bee' came out about this time.

    :),

    Fv

  • wow...nice hair and clothes
