I didn't like first edition too much because of the ultra low level limits placed on the demi-humans. Some couldn't even get past level 4 in some classes.
first edition rocks! still have those manuals in VG condition and the big cyclopedia. oh the fun i had first learning to play then... had buddies in the Army who played, still have a game every now and again.
Jamie Gertz is in the video as well as the actor who plays 'Cameron' in Ferris Beulers Day Off...He is the guy in the teal green shirt/white collar/glasses.
The funny thing is this game was really good at building imagination. You needed a wide vision of creativity to really embrace it. Unfortunetly the game suffered big time because the most outspoken people playing D&D at the time were, well, shall we say eccentric.
For years I heard about how only nerds would play this game and yet today millions of people play WOW or Runescape or Everquest which is just like it.
@VisionofOrion you know i agree with you on that. WoW, Everquest, Runescape and pretty much ALL RPG's where spawns/clones of D&D.
D&D Was the first RPG game made. and how the history of RPG came about it amazing.
Pretty much all of this start from J.R.R. Tolkien designing what everyone know Lords of the Ring. From there Dave Arnason, and Garry Gygax went on to make D&D Based off the LoTR Setting. then From there RPG where born and went from table top to pc and video games.
I'm an English teacher in Taiwan. In about two or three weeks I'm going to introduce RPGs to my ESL students. I'm sure the dialogue will be great. I may even post it here if I have opprotunity to record the sessions. However, there are 19 kids and only 1 of me. Any DMs or GMs out there with tips on running such a large group? DnD is too complex for them, I know this, but I think they would learn a lot of English by playing through a few scenarios and they'll have fun doing it.
@guapounggoy I have DMed for a few large groups. The easiest way to handle a group that large is to assign a person or two to be you assistant. The assistant has one job, for example, combat, or controlling NPCs. It does not sound like much but it can take some weight of the DM and allow him to keep the pace of the story moving forward.
There is no ''absolute'' way to play D&D. Read the rules, choose a Dungeon Master and a few players, Let the DM start a story for those characters the players have done and this is it !!!
However, remember that rules are ''accessories'' to the fun so you can change them any way you like... also, the main fun is to ''flesh out'' a character by giving him an attitude, a past, emotions and hopes for his future ...
If me and my friends were playing this, they would suck out all the atmosphere by making pop culture references and then meta game their way through the dungeon.
Check out the gaming table. There's like, what, a single character sheet, a divider, and a page or two of DM notes? Not one bag of Cheetos or a can of Mountain Dew to be seen. There isn't even a pencil anywhere.
The girl with dark hair and pigtails is a young Jaimie Gertz (she was in Lost Boys and a ton of other movies) and the kid in the teal green shirt with glasses is Alan Ruck (he played Cameron in Ferris Beulers Day Off). Love this commercial, really kicks that 'wayback machine' feel when I first started playing D&D. Good stuff.
Old school, no minis... scary! If I had a nightmare about DnD, it would probably look like that! I mena, did they ahve to purposefully pick poeple that LOOK like geeks?
Jamie Gertz: Bewildered girl with pigtails. Alan Ruck: Nerdy guy in green sweater. Ken Nordine; the narrator. IMDB these names and see who they are now!
4th also makes it basically pointless to choose one class over the other. Everything is basically equal. You get "powers" every level, and alignment has been changed for no good reason.....me and my friends just stopped playing and gave the books away. It was terrible, and really made more for kids than for adults.
2cd edition includes a skill system, but again I find that it is unnecessary and time consuming.
3rd and 3.5 edition has a TON of rules that are expected to be used and unaltered. Everything is mathematically and scientifically built like a puzzle, if you alter anything game balance is jeopardized.
But you are given a ton of choices in creating a character, almost to much.
4th edition is dumbed down for the MMO gamers. You get very little choice, everyone is equal in power.
it's not bad. I have a small group of 3rd edit that I play with once in a blue moon. It is just to colorful and combat oriented. Really it is just a combat simulator. But I've had fun.......I guess.....
I agree. Like the other editions had Miniatures but....I agree. 3rd edition was only all combat oriented. I had to buy AD&D 1E. Because I wanted to ROLEPLAY! not play Chess.
I need one that's best for several friends to play just to have fun.
For instance, we all go into the dungeon together, not exactly as a team, but more as a "safe-in-numbers" deal. Some of us are doing a little role playing, some of us are just here to get loot and Lv up our guys.
The action flows between team-ups and back-stabs as we make our way through the dungeon in search of rare treasure. Its not so much about the world of D&D, its more about the game play and player interactivity.
As long as my friends can jump in, have fun ad laughs, and jump out without getting bogged down by stats, then its a good edition. Me and my friends have good imagination, but we wouldn't want to wade through tons of rules or have fun aspects of messing around screwed up by rules. I plan on being the main GM, and as long as I can take time to understand the rules, then translate it quickly to friends without getting them involved in it too much, then its a good edition.
1st edition has the least amount of rules. THe game is quite open ended, and made in a with the intention that the dungeon master will create his own rules and change things that he doesn't like. The raw form of 1st edition doesn't have skills, just classes and stats. Thanks for the info! Could I ask one more? (of course!)
Do you know the best place to buy or order these books and stuff? I saw an 4th Ed box set, thats something that I'm looking for, so I don't have to hunt everything down.
And don't say Ebay unless you can't think of anything else.
if you lived in NYC I could point you to forbidden planet. They might have an online store, but I don't know. I'd look for small hobbie shops. The big places are going to have the new crap and the older little places might have the older thing.
One more thing I might add.
You can made a 1st edition character in about 15 mins, the other games can easily take the night just to make a character. I don't know if that means anything to you. I like to just make a chrtr and start playing.
Lighting Bolt does 1d6 per caster level. At max level that would be 216. The dragon looks like a large Red Dragon. They have a hit die of 15d8. That makes a max Hit Point at 120. It also saves at a roll of 4 or higher (which means it will take half damage). Its "lets pretend" with actions determined by dice rolls.
A "Game master" will describe the game world and story, whilst also making sure the rules are followed.
There are two ways to play: Focus on story and acting, or playing strictly to the rules in the manuals, and using game boards with minatures.
I don't personally play these games, but as a programmer and artist, the world building element is interesting.

As for families, one of my DM's grew up with parents who played since 1st Ed, so naturally, she played with them as a family.
I would hope that my kids (when me and my partner have them eventually) would join in D&D with us as well.

But 4th edition is like playing WoW on paper. It's terrible. It's all about getting power and more power, while sacrificing the roll playing aspect.
