I'm Russian, and I'd like to say that, totally regardless of the actual historical circumstances, this poem just feels grand and terrible, in an awesome way. People should appreciate it for what it is before arguing history, ethics or whatever.

I am not a "patriot". I also question "truths" about the history of my own country. It is human nature to question. It isn't helpful to accuse people who don't think like you of "enemies of the people". I have not read a couple of books about Russian history, I have read dozens, many of them by Russian authors. It is healthy to question what passes for established truth. The stalinist regime was a criminal regime, even communists say it. And the soviet experiment was an unmitigated disaster.

Why do you insult me? I guess you are right about Germans, after all, the best ruler Russia ever had was a German princess. We are not talking about Nazis, or the GPW. We were talking about Russians killing and enslaving Russians, millions of them (and other non Russian peoples who had the misfortune of being part of the USSR). Of course you won the War with great heroism and sacrifice, and I am the first to acknowledge it and feel glad you did. That was not the point, that's all.

You are right about that, and I condemn it too. But, what has it to do with Simonov? Don't read me wrong. I think Жди меня is a beautiful and inspiring poem. I dearly love Cinny platochek and one of my favourites among all songs (including latin ones) is Прощание Славянки . @ksendzsurala We have a town in Uruguay called "San Javier" whose people are mostly descentants from Russian inmigrants from the early XX century. Some come from the Dombass. He did regret it, and said so, in the last years of his life.

Simonov regretted his complicity with the stalinist regime at the end of his life. It is of no concern, he was a very minor figure in the context of Russian culture.
