Why don't people appreciate the classics anymore? I love Beck and the White Stripes for reminding people of the blues by making it in they're own fashion. Without people like this, we would just have stupid as modern music like lady gaga.
that was totally not awesome! hold on ! i have a compliment . thank you for the post, and the stop button. and ,i also want to thank beck for having no talent, but still be able to sell a record...
I love Skip James, to bad they cut off Beck to go to Skip because Beck was doing a great job. Anyone who knows the tradition of blues knows that bluesmen borrow licks off each other, cover, do there thing.
@3rdofcatjay Oddly I love Beck.....yet I find this a poor cover of Skip Jame's original. Are you me from an Parallel Universe where everything is backwards or something? I've got a goatee so I can only imagine that I am the evil version of myself.
@frankensteinmoneymac well sir, i happen to rock the amish/abraham lincoln neck beard at the moment so i'm not exactly sure. i'v heard that the popular opinion is at least 11 parallels realities exist so you could be the "Frylock" of us .though personally, i believe the real evil version to be the "cop me" with the well manicured mustache.
@3rdofcatjay Frylock huh? Interesting theory...I've never really thought of that.....however, that would explain why people always tell me I look like a giant animated box of French Fries. As for the cop you.....A well manicured mustache? Like a porno 'stash? Yeah...that is total evil there. The only excuse for having a mustache like that is if you are a porno star. Otherwise it simply signifies evil. *shiver*
@ClosetMoth actually, Skip james did not like Cream's cover of that song, so that would really surprise me, if he liked a crappy cover like this, beck is just acting, and mocking you. He is not doing music with his guitar at all, just hitting it, and pretending " it comes from the soul", And i won't talk about that shitty harmonica stuff he's done there
Yeah, the vocals lack soul, but I really like his interpretation of this. Its honest to who Beck is as an artist yet it still retains the spirit of the original. The guitar work is exceptional. The way he works James's licks and runs into his own style and voicings makes me jealous of his creative ability.
emmmm......not very good. i expect more from beck. not comparing it with the original, i expect more talent, more innovation, more punch and tone coming from him. MORE.........SOUL. If Beck is a modern master, i just think he should have put more into this song. Us blues fans will critique his every note, every feel, every facial expression. He doesn't understand the deep southern blues, the triumph, and this my friends, is sub par. MIGHT AS WELL BE SOME CLOWN PLAYIN IN A COFFEE SHOP.
for any of those people who are like me and like a huge range of genres of music: you know when you listen to one genre for a week solid and then move on? like going through phases, and then you'd come back round to the same style after a while. i owe beck so much for opening my mind to all these different styles and showing how they can fit together
Why is everyone ripping on this? It's not bad at all. Sure Beck doesn't necessarily have a blues voice and he wasn't wailing away but the man knew what he was doing. He's got blues in him, just listen to some of his earlier demos, don't just stereotype the guy because he's "popular with the young-uns".

Oh looksie over yonder, the tight ass, puritanical, hollier than thou bozo contingent can't handle a dude that messes with convention and does things outta the box...stop being puppets and expand your minds, it's ALL borne of the blues any way you slice it....
Sorry but this guy shouldn't pick songs like this to cover.. The ''rough'' doesn't fit with this song especially when he can't even sing it right and do the melody
I don't know why everyone seems to hate this. I think its awesomely strange in a very good way. I actually like this a lot better than Cream's cover (prepares for the hate)
I hardly think being 'Eruopean' comes into it, being myself a near-obsessive European Beck fan!
Granted, Beck's earlier works are certainly rooted in the blues - however you can't take for granted that everyone will have heard OFITG/SPSM.
I would also say to doubters, while I respect your opinion, you have to consider that Beck's covers are stylised, contemporary translations of classic pieces: rather than attempts at replication! To my ears, both are beautiful.
Listen to the1st album by Beck..and put some f*in ears on..if you can't hear deep roots blues in Beck then start collecting Chris Bown or Rhianna 'cuas eyou aint getting it..
Maybe yer from Eruope..that might explain it
..maybe you're just too young to have lived enough to have an opinion
alright joe keep your hair on. Oh and by the by what's with the europe bruce. it wasn't this fine and cultured continent that created the likes of chris Brown and Rhianna?
hahahaha I remember when I watched this I was a lot younger and I was rolling on the floor with laughter..After listening to skip James, blind wille Johnson, and others it was very hard to get in the mood to understand Beck. I can see where he is coming from now, but I still can't enjoy this cover.
I actually like alot of Beck's music but he needs to stop covering blues songs because he's horrible at it. A soulless voice and his skills with the guitar are far under par.
I agree with you about progressive artists. I love John Coltrane and the avant garde jazz movement, but much of it was meandering musings that only move you to turn them off. Coltrane himself was big enough to admit that he was finding his way during the early years and much of it wasn't very good.
But I agree you have to break out the box and stumble before you hit your stride. I love Beck but I am as big a critic as I am an admirer of whomever I love.
This is the hell of a shity argument man. He threw himself in a shack. It's like if'd kill his woman just so he could pretend to have the blues. It's meanless...
LOL anyone who doesn't GET Beck is so narrow in their vision and understanding of music. Beck captures the raw feel of the delta blues, folk, and many different genres of roots music better than any other contemporary artist out there.Johnny Cash hand picked one of his songs to record(rowboat)because he thought Beck had an incredible sense of the hillbilly music he grew up with when he was young. When Johnny Cash(among many others...)gives his stamp of approval...look no further.
What I said is perfectly logical. I'm not being "a Nazi"; I'm dedicated to the greatest music that this country ever produced and if you think that it's all right for Beck to make a mockery of Skip James' music, then you're an imbecile.
It's "you're AN idiot". The fact that you can't use proper grammar automatically disqualifies any "point" you may be trying to make. "Worthless elitist"? This has nothing to be with being an elitist. The music of Skip James is from a different time and place with which Beck can not get in touch. Are you going to deny that, too?
What I was trying to do was get my substance across, not my grammar. I'm sorry that it made such a huge impression on you. Anyway, this has everything to do with being an elitist, the fact that you think this is a "mockery of Skip James' music" and if you don't know that "you're an imbecile". "unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player" and "you're grammar is atrocious" is pretty eilietst to.
see what increiblo is saying. he's on the right track. you sir still cling to your nazi ways and only see things in a 2dimensional plane. blues isnt the only style of music there is in this universe. i like the blues, i'm quite a fan myself, but hey i like other stuff too. and some of us here can actually appreciate more than just one kind of music.
seriously enroll at a local university and take a popmus101 paper or something.
Again, another person who lacks fundamental knowledge of English grammar. I should take a Popular Music 101 class? That's very funny, considering how I've read many books on music and know about Blues, Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, Old-Timey music, etc. "Nazi"? Yes, I do genetic experiments on children and sodomize Jewish men. Good job, idiot.
"Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song?" because the producers wanted the audience to see how influential the blues was in shaping today's popular music. and calling beck's cover a mockery just "because (it) contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does" once again proves my point. thanks for digging your own grave.
and how old are you? your fanboyism just leaks of immaturity. i get better conversations about music with slipknot fans than i do with you, which leads us to the very reason i call you nazi. it is because u don't have(or simply can't, due to ignorance) appreciation for other forms of music just like nazis dont have appreciation for other races. beck did what he considered artistically appropriate as a tribute.
Right, I can't appreciate other forms of music. That's what I listen to everything from Skip James to the Ramones to Deep Purple to the Platters to Korean folk songs, right? Nice job judging someone whom you've never met, fool.
Now that I have defined elitist for you, let me also mention that Beck started out playing at folk cafe's covering blues songs, which is something to do with the blues. I listen to a ton of delta blues(own Complete Early Recordings of Skip James), but also listen to NEW music that has actually been made in my lifetime. Composing pseudo intellectual poetry for people doesn't really make good points. lol@you're videos, you're not Son House.
within his artistic spectrum. and how pretentious of you to just condemn it as a "mockery" to the great skip james. you're perfectly entitled to your opinions but such public display of ignorance surely is an offence to the whole of humanity. people like you sir make a misanthrope out of me.
I don't want to keep saying this, but your grammar is atrocious. Yes, this is a mockery of Skip James' original, because if contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does. Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song? Why choose an artist who is unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player?
Beck is not only a competent player but he grew up on country blues. Bonny Raitt probably would have done a good job but this is definitely more gritty and in the vein of Skip.
oh and heres another thing that will get you raging and rambling. flying lizards' cover of the song, money. search it up on the tube and watch them make a "mockery" out of this classic rnb number.
Again, for those of you who think I only like '30s Country Blues, perhaps you should know that I also like Deep Purple, Korean folk songs, the Ramones and CCR. The "Nazi" comment is particularly ridiculous and offensive, and so is the "You're not black" comment, considering how I'm both Jewish and black. I'm done talking to you people; it's more rewarding to watch paint dry.
I'm done speaking with you people. I never judged the Flying Lizards' cover of the song, because I've never heard it. "Lol @ you're videos"? "You are videos"? What is that supposed to mean? I'm not Son House? Did I say that I was Son House?
ya deep purple, korean folk songs and ramones... such refined and broad taste in music you have. i will shut up also. all i wanted to say was that what beck is doing in the above video is not another i'm-a-big-rockstar-so-ill-just-get-this-over-and-done-with kinda cover. there is something you're obviously missing and is definately not a mere 'mockery' as you simply put it. well yea beauty is in the eye of the beholder. have fun listening to your deep purple, korean folk songs and the ramones.
attacking ppl's grammr, spelling..etc on the internet is just goes to show the extent of your maturity. and if u thought the nazi comment was offensive here's a better one: good on you for being both black AND jewish. you can now actually afford your chicken and watermelons rather than steal them.
It's very simple: Acoustic Country Blues cannot be separated from the time and place it existed. Beck is disgracing Mr. James by poorly performing the song, which is a masterpiece. You don't seem to understand that the makers of the documentary should have just let Alvin Youngblood Hart, Corey Harris, Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt play these songs. And let's not forget John Hammond, Jr., too.
Sorry, accidentally posted that reply without having finished it.
What I meant to say is that most covers that Beck does are deconstructions, and sounding "fake" is a big part of that. The fact that he doesn't sound like Skip James? Or that it sounds all broken? That is the point of his cover. He's recognising the fact he isn't a real bluesman, that he isn't Skip James; and going another way.
And saying that Beck isn't an invetor... well, records like Mellow Gold or Odelay say otherwise.
Ihateanglophiles, you are 100% right. The whole point of Blues is singing and lyrics, and Beck's guitar playing is atrocious. This is a pathetic joke.
some of you really dont get it? i thought this performance was especially ingenious in that everything was so broken down and unstable. i loved his 'out of tune' harmonica and the cruddy dano guitar sound. it really goes well with the folk-blues aesthetic
I think you don't even know what "Folk-Blues" is. Do you think that Beck sounds like Skip James or Buddy Moss or Gary Davis? Beck can't play or sing a damned thing compared to those great musicians. They were inventors; he's a loser trying to be a Bluesman.
um.. i love covers because you take one artist's music and interpret it in your own way. those artists performing in the movie aren't supposed to be 'bluesmen' neither did i claim them to be. they are doing their own thing in tribute to the music they love. and all im saying here is that beck brought many elements of 'folk-blues' that fascinates me into contemporary contexts in his own palette.
and would u say that gary moore and his $1281092 dollar les paul approximates closer to the folk-blues aesthetic or is what beck doing here closer to it? folk-blues isnt just about singing and lyrics. whats the difference between mississipi john hurt and bb king if they were to sing the same song?
let me summarize wht you've said: "omfg i listen to more folk-blues than u so shut up and beck sux lol!!1/1!" next time have something more logical to say please and don't be such a nazi about music
You are pathetically clueless. I have no interest in Gary Moore or Beck. The difference between John Hurt and B.B. King is their singing, their background, the era they were born, their guitar playing style, the fact that one played electric Blues and the other played Pre-Blues and early Blues songs on an acoustic guitar. Good enough for you?
I don't know what you mean by "Folk-Blues aesthetic", because "Folk-Blues" encompasses many different styles and tunings. Skip James doesn't sound anything like Brownie McGhee, who sounds nothing like Fred McDowell.
Proof that heroin does the damage medical science claims it does, but that's no excuse for the filmmaker who chose to film it. What was the intent here? To insult those into the old country-blues standards or to show how "great" Beck never could be without two turntables and that fucking microphone?

Haha well put. I don't know about the rest of these folks but I certainly can feel the soul of a man in Beck's performance.

Obviously not up to the very high standard of Skip James (or Cream, for that matter). But, hell, Beck is pretty cool anyway.

Beck???
He just sucks!
The fact that he is even signed shows what the music industry has come to: a steaming pile of crap!
HUMANITY IS ROTTEN!
I'll preach that things will have to get much worse before they get any better too.
Skip James was at least a great song writer, and it shows in his face that he was also a deep-thinking man.
These days people--generally speaking--are heartless, faithless, blind creatures.
Hey, just my opinion. I'm no body (with a heart to feel and ears to hear) to talk.

To my ears, both are beautiful.

sucks balls compared to Skip.

Listen to the1st album by Beck..and put some f*in ears on..if you can't hear deep roots blues in Beck then start collecting Chris Bown or Rhianna 'cuas eyou aint getting it..

hahahaha I remember when I watched this I was a lot younger and I was rolling on the floor with laughter..After listening to skip James, blind wille Johnson, and others it was very hard to get in the mood to understand Beck. I can see where he is coming from now, but I still can't enjoy this cover.
ceh3000 3 years ago
I actually like alot of Beck's music but he needs to stop covering blues songs because he's horrible at it. A soulless voice and his skills with the guitar are far under par.

Here is what Johnny Cash says about Beck.
/watch?v=Nf5mJTuR04c&feature=related
I am reminded of people who say that hip hop sucks. They don't understand progressive artists and art. Miles Davis last album was a hip hop album.
skipperiffic 3 years ago 3
I agree with you about progressive artists. I love John Coltrane and the avant garde jazz movement, but much of it was meandering musings that only move you to turn them off. Coltrane himself was big enough to admit that he was finding his way during the early years and much of it wasn't very good.
But I agree you have to break out the box and stumble before you hit your stride. I love Beck but I am as big a critic as I am an admirer of whomever I love.

I respect that! I do the same sometimes.

Beck lived in a shack for like 5 years in the early 90's.
He's got quite the right to sing the blues.
TheBonusNoise 2 years ago 2
This is the hell of a shity argument man. He threw himself in a shack. It's like if'd kill his woman just so he could pretend to have the blues. It's meanless...
ptrLeGrand 2 years ago 2
He threw himself in a shack? He moved to New York by himself and he worked dead-end jobs to support himself.
TheBonusNoise 2 years ago
LOL anyone who doesn't GET Beck is so narrow in their vision and understanding of music. Beck captures the raw feel of the delta blues, folk, and many different genres of roots music better than any other contemporary artist out there.Johnny Cash hand picked one of his songs to record(rowboat)because he thought Beck had an incredible sense of the hillbilly music he grew up with when he was young. When Johnny Cash(among many others...)gives his stamp of approval...look no further.

What I said is perfectly logical. I'm not being "a Nazi"; I'm dedicated to the greatest music that this country ever produced and if you think that it's all right for Beck to make a mockery of Skip James' music, then you're an imbecile.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
You're a idiot, hes paying tribute to his him by covering this song. Mockery? Greatest music ever produced? Worthless elitist.
Heeey333 3 years ago
It's "you're AN idiot". The fact that you can't use proper grammar automatically disqualifies any "point" you may be trying to make. "Worthless elitist"? This has nothing to be with being an elitist. The music of Skip James is from a different time and place with which Beck can not get in touch. Are you going to deny that, too?
doctorpep1 3 years ago
What I was trying to do was get my substance across, not my grammar. I'm sorry that it made such a huge impression on you. Anyway, this has everything to do with being an elitist, the fact that you think this is a "mockery of Skip James' music" and if you don't know that "you're an imbecile". "unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player" and "you're grammar is atrocious" is pretty eilietst to.
Heeey333 3 years ago
Elitist! ooohhh no.... God I hate that word.
bryanswagerty 3 years ago
see what increiblo is saying. he's on the right track. you sir still cling to your nazi ways and only see things in a 2dimensional plane. blues isnt the only style of music there is in this universe. i like the blues, i'm quite a fan myself, but hey i like other stuff too. and some of us here can actually appreciate more than just one kind of music.
seriously enroll at a local university and take a popmus101 paper or something.
cgarr 3 years ago
Again, another person who lacks fundamental knowledge of English grammar. I should take a Popular Music 101 class? That's very funny, considering how I've read many books on music and know about Blues, Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, Old-Timey music, etc. "Nazi"? Yes, I do genetic experiments on children and sodomize Jewish men. Good job, idiot.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
"Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song?" because the producers wanted the audience to see how influential the blues was in shaping today's popular music. and calling beck's cover a mockery just "because (it) contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does" once again proves my point. thanks for digging your own grave.
cgarr 3 years ago
and how old are you? your fanboyism just leaks of immaturity. i get better conversations about music with slipknot fans than i do with you, which leads us to the very reason i call you nazi. it is because u don't have(or simply can't, due to ignorance) appreciation for other forms of music just like nazis dont have appreciation for other races. beck did what he considered artistically appropriate as a tribute.
cgarr 3 years ago
Right, I can't appreciate other forms of music. That's what I listen to everything from Skip James to the Ramones to Deep Purple to the Platters to Korean folk songs, right? Nice job judging someone whom you've never met, fool.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
Now that I have defined elitist for you, let me also mention that Beck started out playing at folk cafe's covering blues songs, which is something to do with the blues. I listen to a ton of delta blues(own Complete Early Recordings of Skip James), but also listen to NEW music that has actually been made in my lifetime. Composing pseudo intellectual poetry for people doesn't really make good points. lol@you're videos, you're not Son House.
Heeey333 3 years ago
within his artistic spectrum. and how pretentious of you to just condemn it as a "mockery" to the great skip james. you're perfectly entitled to your opinions but such public display of ignorance surely is an offence to the whole of humanity. people like you sir make a misanthrope out of me.
cgarr 3 years ago
I don't want to keep saying this, but your grammar is atrocious. Yes, this is a mockery of Skip James' original, because if contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does. Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song? Why choose an artist who is unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player?
doctorpep1 3 years ago
Beck is not only a competent player but he grew up on country blues. Bonny Raitt probably would have done a good job but this is definitely more gritty and in the vein of Skip.
bryanswagerty 3 years ago
i won
Heeey333 3 years ago
oh and heres another thing that will get you raging and rambling. flying lizards' cover of the song, money. search it up on the tube and watch them make a "mockery" out of this classic rnb number.
cgarr 3 years ago
Again, for those of you who think I only like '30s Country Blues, perhaps you should know that I also like Deep Purple, Korean folk songs, the Ramones and CCR. The "Nazi" comment is particularly ridiculous and offensive, and so is the "You're not black" comment, considering how I'm both Jewish and black. I'm done talking to you people; it's more rewarding to watch paint dry.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
I'm done speaking with you people. I never judged the Flying Lizards' cover of the song, because I've never heard it. "Lol @ you're videos"? "You are videos"? What is that supposed to mean? I'm not Son House? Did I say that I was Son House?
doctorpep1 3 years ago
ya deep purple, korean folk songs and ramones... such refined and broad taste in music you have. i will shut up also. all i wanted to say was that what beck is doing in the above video is not another i'm-a-big-rockstar-so-ill-just-get-this-over-and-done-with kinda cover. there is something you're obviously missing and is definately not a mere 'mockery' as you simply put it. well yea beauty is in the eye of the beholder. have fun listening to your deep purple, korean folk songs and the ramones.
cgarr 3 years ago
and ps.
attacking ppl's grammr, spelling..etc on the internet is just goes to show the extent of your maturity. and if u thought the nazi comment was offensive here's a better one: good on you for being both black AND jewish. you can now actually afford your chicken and watermelons rather than steal them.
cgarr 3 years ago
Why intellectualize? - if it sucks, it sucks.
Deconstruction my bottom.
Gotta be ables to construct it first in order to deconstruct it.
ihateanglophiles 3 years ago
It's very simple: Acoustic Country Blues cannot be separated from the time and place it existed. Beck is disgracing Mr. James by poorly performing the song, which is a masterpiece. You don't seem to understand that the makers of the documentary should have just let Alvin Youngblood Hart, Corey Harris, Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt play these songs. And let's not forget John Hammond, Jr., too.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
Sorry, accidentally posted that reply without having finished it.
What I meant to say is that most covers that Beck does are deconstructions, and sounding "fake" is a big part of that. The fact that he doesn't sound like Skip James? Or that it sounds all broken? That is the point of his cover. He's recognising the fact he isn't a real bluesman, that he isn't Skip James; and going another way.
And saying that Beck isn't an invetor... well, records like Mellow Gold or Odelay say otherwise.
increiblo 3 years ago

fact is, ol' becks can't play...
not to mention the so called singing- which is the whole point of the 'blues'.
get some ears y'all...and some taste.
ihateanglophiles 3 years ago
Ihateanglophiles, you are 100% right. The whole point of Blues is singing and lyrics, and Beck's guitar playing is atrocious. This is a pathetic joke.
donoage 3 years ago
some of you really dont get it? i thought this performance was especially ingenious in that everything was so broken down and unstable. i loved his 'out of tune' harmonica and the cruddy dano guitar sound. it really goes well with the folk-blues aesthetic
cgarr 3 years ago
yeah, seems taken form one of his early works
MikeSpikeita 3 years ago
I think you don't even know what "Folk-Blues" is. Do you think that Beck sounds like Skip James or Buddy Moss or Gary Davis? Beck can't play or sing a damned thing compared to those great musicians. They were inventors; he's a loser trying to be a Bluesman.
donoage 3 years ago
um.. i love covers because you take one artist's music and interpret it in your own way. those artists performing in the movie aren't supposed to be 'bluesmen' neither did i claim them to be. they are doing their own thing in tribute to the music they love. and all im saying here is that beck brought many elements of 'folk-blues' that fascinates me into contemporary contexts in his own palette.
cgarr 3 years ago 2
and would u say that gary moore and his $1281092 dollar les paul approximates closer to the folk-blues aesthetic or is what beck doing here closer to it? folk-blues isnt just about singing and lyrics. whats the difference between mississipi john hurt and bb king if they were to sing the same song?
let me summarize wht you've said: "omfg i listen to more folk-blues than u so shut up and beck sux lol!!1/1!" next time have something more logical to say please and don't be such a nazi about music
cgarr 3 years ago
You are pathetically clueless. I have no interest in Gary Moore or Beck. The difference between John Hurt and B.B. King is their singing, their background, the era they were born, their guitar playing style, the fact that one played electric Blues and the other played Pre-Blues and early Blues songs on an acoustic guitar. Good enough for you?
doctorpep1 3 years ago
I don't know what you mean by "Folk-Blues aesthetic", because "Folk-Blues" encompasses many different styles and tunings. Skip James doesn't sound anything like Brownie McGhee, who sounds nothing like Fred McDowell.
doctorpep1 3 years ago
its good other than the harmonica, which sound out if tune or sumthing
