The Master has just fun with his friends! He just stand there smiling like he was doing nothing . But he is shredding like no one ever have shredded before! This is unreal.
It isn't just the fastest descending scales ever played on guitar, it is also a very exciting way to play it. Picking all the notes at this speed seems impossible but Shawn is just having fun with it, like it is just a normal thing to do in his world..Priceless footage, thanx for sharing..
Shawn's note-to-note efficiency was the smoothest and fastest I've ever heard. I've heard guys who can get "in the neighborhood" but it's the way he fearlessly attacks those sequences of fast notes that shows he's absolutely confident that he won't mess up, no second guessing - he just rips into it. It's awesome. Like Paul Gilbert says "Oh, Shawn Lane, the most terrifying guy of all time...."
@beckeromania yeah i read in an article on lanes website that they actually met one day while yngwie was touring in the southern region of the U.S. apparently some of yngwies
fellow band mates thought it would be funny if the two met; from what I read yngwie wasn't too happy about it shawn had him seeing red. but don't quote me on that ;)
And to think I never listened to this guy until a few days back. I knew he was around but nobody told me how incredible his playing was! I'm another fan!
I do think it's kind of odd to hear people joke that listening to Shawn makes them want to quit playing guitar, because I have to say that as blown away as I've been listening to other guitarists, none of them inspire me to pick up the guitar the way Shawn does. He was a genuine soul, I feel like I've known him my whole life just listening to Temporal Analogues and all the great stuff he did with Hellborg. RIP Maestro, you are sorely missed.
the way he strings together all of the scales and the intervalic shifting methods is just incredible how can anyone move 15 frets down the neck in one monuver as fast and as amazing as that?? on holdsworth could come close to what shawn lane did.
GOD it really sucks because he was soooo amazingly wonderful and performances like this where he plays out of his skin probably were seen by less than 20-30 people and the world never really knew who Shawn was not to mention how good he was. People think certain players are great, but the TRULY great ones never get the credit they deserve. Shawn is more famous now because of YouTube and after his death than he EVER was in life. Truly, truly sad.
He was only known in serious music circles in the mid to late 80's like by Mike Varney and people at GIT, even though he played with Black Oak Arkansas. I heard a story from a friend of his that one time Metallica was in town and they stayed at the Peabody Hotel where Shawn and the Willys were playing a rooftop type party and Kirk Hammett heard this insane playing and went to see who it was and when they saw Shawn they were blown away.
Shawn seemed to be more of a spectacle in the early days because of how insane and WAY ahead of it's time his playing was. Guys like Rusty Cooley and Marshall Harrison would not be around if it weren't for Shawn Lane, but no one knew that type of shredding would become more accepted 20 years down the line from when Shawn really started doing it. Michael Angelo Batio couldn't even play like Shawn, even though he was fast with good technique, the differences in playing are immeasurable.
Cool story about Metallica, thanks for the info, well, I've been playing guitar for most of my life and knew all the greats, but I never heard of Shawn Lane before until youtube and I just could not believe it, truly the greatest guitarist to walk the earth, the students at the GIT would of been blessed to learn from him when he popped in, way ahead of his time alright, the guys a cosmic traveller for sure lol, just amazing.
michael angelo batio said and i quote "shawn lane was the jedi master of guitar" rusty cooley struggles to hit shawns speed though he can and marshall can hit his speed without trouble but he lacks the soulful playing that you could feel when you listen to shawn lane playing like shawn lane is one thing writing like shawn lane i don't see ever happening again
No doubt. I have seen Shawn play numerous times lives as I am from Memphis. I first saw him play when I was 15 and was completely blown away. Rusty can play as fast as Shawn easily but his phrasing is different. Shawn was very outside sounding and Rusty is more symmetrical. Marshall is a bedroom player for the most part. He is very good but I don't think he could do live what he does in front of his computer. The day Lane died I literally cried because he was such a great player and man.
I cried all day too that day. I still do, almost every time I hear or see him play. He inspires me to get better and better at my own musical expression.
Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I went to Murphy's and other clubs in Memphis, or called them, just hoping that Shawn would be playing that night or that weekend. It was really hard to catch a gig of his after he released "Powers" because he was traveling a lot. However, after the second record was scrapped by his record company he had to rely on playing live in Memphis so he played here A LOT more so that was really good for those of us who idolized him. Such a tragedy.
yeah he actually just posted a video talking about the vigier he said it's hands down the best guitar ever. he said it plays so good you feel like you're cheating it makes playing effortless hence why i'm buying one.
I live in Minnesota and have wanted to even SEE a Lane signature to try it out but Vigier guitars are so scarce here. It's like expecting to see sunflowers in the middle of a blizzard filled landscape.
lol i know what you mean they're extremely rare in the us however there are 3 dealers i know of 1 being in florida the another in massachusetts and the last in california the one that almost always has them is in florida they sell quite a few shawn lane models and the owner of the shop in florida told me they are better than any other "shred" guitar he's played including high end companies prs, ibanez (j customs), and even suhrs he said they're simply the best guitar for shred period
Reminds me of the concept of "cruise speed" in aircraft. SR-71 could cruise at Mach 3.3. "Dash" speed meant "briefly going even faster and then going back to cruise" in a way. Shawn's "cruise" and "dash" speeds were very high. Shawn could "cruise" comfortably at "SR-71" velocities if that analogy makes sense.
Yea it's funny how I mention to guitar players and fans, have yo ever heard of Lane, Holdsworth, Mclaghlin, Stern, Metheny ect.
To be honest if you have never heard and gotten into these guys music, you have have never heard guitar . Or at it's highest level. The guys in the fusion vein are responsible for creating alot of the stuff that is out there today in the mainstream rock, but the fusion guys get very little pub.
Lane liked being in the underground, I met him 1 time, it was awsome.
Shawn was a chain smoker and contracted emphysema at a very young age (in his mid to late 30's). Consequently, he had to use supplemental oxygen often times to help him breathe. In addition, he had severe psoriasis and psoritic arthritis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease & causes arthritis that is very painful. He was on corticosteroids because of this. He was supposed to have a lung operation (possibly a partial transplant) but it was not successful and he died shortly there after.
@trex257 I agree, But you know whats funny? Theres more music out there with this same kind of effort that even less people appreciate because they dont understand music. Lol, Check out Necrophagist. Not as fast but pretty amazing.
I think you're maybe clocking the speed in a different way, since the Willjay clocking has Shawn as the only one that can do 18nps, and other guitarist at 16nps (like Macalpine, Michael Angelo batio and some others).
Scratch 47 above says "It's the equivalent of 16th notes at about 282, if you can hear it in groups of 4 there you can make that out....just shy of 19nps. Insane."
