Fantastic ! Great work, electrics are coming strong now. I started with electric model aircrafts 25 years ago and have followed everyting related ever since. I do gliding as well and see the Antares, Taurus etc coming now. This is sooo good. Keep up the good work.
Congrats. to FlightStar, but they should have a blog or updates on their website, we're totally in the dark as to the status of the E-Spyder. Personally, I would buy two if they can more closely match the nonelectric version in performance and endurance. My guess is that capability is 5 yrs. out. For sure there will be better batteries and engines in the next few yrs.
A friend of mine just got an electric scooter and it also is impressive as heck. Almost silent...
Well done guys! I think this segment of aviation has the most to gain from electric power. 2 cycles sound horrible compared to this electric motor, 4 cycles are nice but heavy and expensive. Battery tech is always improving, this is the future of sport aviation IMHO. Way to go.
They need to do a new weight and balance on the plane, it is flying tail heavy!
Getting the CG right would make the plane fly better and the endurance of the batterys would be better not having to fight the higher than normal ALPHA.
For now, realize you are watching history being made, just like the Wright Bros. in 1903. This is way more than just an electric-powered ultralight. All aviation will change from this day forward - believe it.
I was at Oshkosh and I can tell you that the noise level in person is about 20% of what you're hearing on this video! The camera does indeed amplify the sound, in person you can hardly even hear the prop or the motor...I've got electric brushless models that are noisier than the e-Spyder.
Look for my article on electric and other alternative flight programs around the world in an upcoming article in Plane & Pilot -James Lawrence
Saw you flying at Oshkosh. This is an amazing machine so quiet and smooth. Well done to Flight Star and Yuneec look forward to the release of the aircraft that will change the way of ultralight aviation.
Is that a PERM motor running LiFe cells at 72V? Flight Times? Heat issues/Battery Management? RPM or how did you choose prop size? Flight Speed? Rate of Climb @ gross? I'm an Aerospace engineer and really want to build something like this from scratch. Running numbers is one thing but practical knowledge is another. Thanks.
Had a Spyder and just recently sold it...wish I had this electric version! Great idea for powering a Spyder. Is it Part 103 legal? Good luck with the marketing.
Actually the noise is a camera function. The sound in person is much quieter, we have just started using this camera and have not worked much with the adjustments.

I saw it at Oskosh. It was completely silent and I was a little dissapointed because it sounds like a turboprop on Youtube.
I'm thinking of converting my Kitfox to electric as the Rotax 912 is ready for overhaul and too expensive.

china will be a tough competitor in the next 5~10 years
this is just their first attempt in electric aircraft but looks like they will be leading in manufacturing eletric power systems for small aircraft
they already have a contract w/ flightstar for electric propulsions
yuneecs electric power for Paraglider is already the rage in europe

Why so noisy under electric?
Is the noise related to the efficiency of the prop?

The E-Spyder is an ELECTRIC Ultralight designed & built by Tom Peghiny of Flightstar!
After a 50' takeoff roll, it flies at 40-50mph for ~40 minutes on one charge!
