  • If its for Chocolate , i don't care about romantic stuff (ಠ ›ಠ) !

  • So Girichoco is for obligations, chocomoko is for friends, and honmeichoco is for boyfriends?

  • A lot of things are unique to Japan... in fact Japan is the most unique country out there!

  • I think I like Japan's Valentine's Day moreso than the US's. It seems sweeter and not so "big".

  • Your videos are the best!

  • lol thats like the same with every asian culture, and probably everywhere else, its just a friend thing man lol

  • Obligation choco LOL

  • I wish Valentine's Day was like this in my country.

  • choco for choco!

  • Can I give a girl a BIG white pie (because March 14 is Pi Day)?

  • I have a question. I'm having roses delivered to my girlfriends house this Feb 14 in japan. I was wondering if it would be weird since i am a guy. I only remember white day now after i ordered roses for Feb 14 already..should i cancel it or something?

  • @tnshandawg

    Your choice..

it doesn't happen here of course..

just make sure the flowers aren't white..

  • hi my name is Marissa. 19 years old and currently a college freshman. do you know the criteria for getting into a Japanese college? and about the chocolate thing my ? is this what if you can't eat chocolate? like i can't eat it....i mean i'll still accept it because it's polite but. can i decline it if i explain why i can't eat it? i mean i don't really want to be wasteful throw it all away later...so what should i do? i plan on visiting japan for a little while before i go off 2 med school....

  • I'm really surprised you didn't mention the 本命 chocolate. From what I've heard/watched, valentines is a day that also allows people to confess to one another. anyways thanks for the upload ;)

  • You really need to keep track of who gave you which set of chocolates ... and then take those packages and pass em on one month after. (Just make sure you don´t return the packages to the very person you received it from beforehand! I mean: these could be some very old chocolates ... ) (^_^)

  • after going through these videos, a thought came to my mind. "I need to subscribe to view more of his future videos" *subscribe*

  • I recently managed to convince my family in the U.S. that we should stop exchanging gifts completely for birthdays, Christmas, etc. It was silly for adults who can buy things they want for themselves to be trading gifts back and forth for no reason other than tradition. Everyone buying unnecessary tokens to trade back and forth. Not to mention the cards, etc.

Having extricated myself from even the Western gift giving nonsense, I certainly could not handle the more extensive Japanese version.

  • i dont know if u ever mentioned this, but my japanese teacher once said when u receive a business card from someone u just dont take it with one hand (and if u rly wanna screw it up fold the business card) and put it in ur back pocket. they sort of take things with both hands. i guess it will be the same for anything e.g. valentines chocolate

  • I'm glad you brought this up. I'm sure i would be thrown off big time if i hadn't seen this video.

  • YAY ITS THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!1

  • well... been a guy is japan gotta be really good... getting chocolates all the time hahaha thumbs up =D

  • Question: how long has this whole thing been a part of Japanese culture? For some reason, I'm going to guess no more than 10 years

  • Comment removed

  • @NathanF11989

where do you get that idea? Japanese are people just like anyone else -- capable of the same feelings every person goes through throughout their life. they have quite a few words for it...(more so then I can think of in english anyways..)やきもち、羨ましい、妬ましい, ジェラシー, etc... If anything it might "seem" like they're not jealous, but that's because japanese tend to hide their true feelings. which is very debatable as to whether or not that's a good thing.

  • player...

  • arent they usually also saying that they are giving you chocolate because your their friend or something like that....dont know the word in japanese and then there is the more romantic chocolate which your girlfriend usually gives you and the romantic can even have a heart or heart shaped or something like that?

ive only seen it in japanese anime so i dont know if its true

  • i like your realistic point of view ;D it's interesting how much a foreigner can misunderstand XD

  • How is Japenese made chocolate in comparrision to British or Amercian Chocolate?

  • Interesting. Valentines Day in Japan.

  • uhhh if they give you something else.. on white day, do you give it back? or something like that?

  • but u can't beat cadbury's chocolate though there's nothing like it the world u certainly don't want to know what ozzy ozbourne said's about chocolate from aboard apart fr the uk of course lol as its some of the best chocolate around I say

  • Don't girls usually give chocolate to their friend's who are girl's, too?

Also, "White day" must be expensive for the guys, having to buy chocolate for so many girls(I mean, with out looking like an ass...)

Thumbs up....sorry, no more stars... ):

  • Does the chocolate last long enough to give it back? Lol.

  • bizarre

  • Must be interesting to see a different culture.

  • so what if Valintines day is my birthday ? o.O

  • Even if those were giri-chocolates, it's still nice to get them, right? :)

I've heard the other ones, prepared for real boyfriends, are called honmei-choco.. or something. I don't remember it well - was it like that? :)

    5stars!

  • @caireann

    That is true.

    Thanks for the 5!

  • @caireann i think honmei.choco is liek HOME MADE CHOCOLATE BUT ADAPTED FOR PRONUNCIATIONin japan :3

  • @FaeSamaAble Haha, I have never thought of such adaptation - but you're right, it does sound like that :D Thanks!

  • Great! Thanks again :]

  • I've just finished this playlist and am sad there are no more to watch..yet! Hopefully more are coming :]

Very informative, i've enjoyed every single one of them, thanks very much.

  • @Tettekete1

Another one coming within the week ^_^

  • good to know that valentines doesn't means valantines everywhere ;)

  • 5* as per usual :)

  • @KunoichiKira

You are a great supporter, thanks!

  • only because what is support, is great. :)

  • Question, is it built up as much over in Japan as it is in the wester part of the world? Like are their overpriced roses that you see guys ever buying for the girls? And do you see couples out on valentines day or is valentines day pretty much completely for girls to give guys gifts and then white day guys would give girls the presents?

Thanks for another cool vid ^^

  • @GlompoFie

Yeah, pretty much just what was in the video.. not much romance here!

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Aw so sad x3 Oh well at least people aren't spending outrageous money on flowers and suppers then!

  • @GlompoFie

    True.

Just on buying choco for people they dont care about ^_^

  • Aha cool ^^

  • Oh japan, always getting our holiday traditions all mixed up. :)

  • It'd be neat to see what you're giving them in return. Must be a tasty day, for the guys at least! :)

    ~Kat

  • @Luminasita

    Probably cookies...

  • i knew this stuff since middle school^^ my friends and I did this once!

mostly i gave everyone chocolate <-<? y me?

  • ive heard about obligatory and hanmei chocolate. how do they differ from each other?

  • @Julmuu

    hanmei = hand made

Some girls make it.. the meaning is the same.. hand made is just a bit more effort.

  • interesting! :)

i read about this on the internet and

in south korea after white day they have black day to represent singleness... is this for japan too? happy valentines day! :) ♥

  • @xOxannachanxOx

    No black day here ^_^

  • I was told that on White Day, guys have to "sanbai gaeshi", or give back gifts 3x the worth of what they were given. I always found that detail amusing & wondered how many actually do it?

Also, how noticeable is the difference between giri-choco (for coworkers, acquaintances, and neighbors, etc),

    honmei-choco (for that "special someone")

and tomo-choco (for friends)? Does it like verge on western xmas gifts in the latter categories, or do you just know bc of who gave them to you?

    5*as always! ;)

  • @weya

No need for white day gift to be more expensive..

you know giri choco because of who gave it ^_^

  • can you make a video of people speaking Japanese on the camera and you speaking back about something?

  • @blueswiftness

A couple of my videos have Japanese spoken.

  • Did she give you something too for v-day or was those girls the only ones that did?

  • You should make a video about what Japanese think about other countries.......

  • @joshv89

Japanese people don't say negative stuff about other people...

    so they would be diplomatic...

  • hahah japan is so different! :D Thanks to your videos i understand that, every video tells me stuff i didnt know yet! xD

  • @xmadteaparty

    cool :-)

  • do you have a counterpart on you tube in Shanghai??? Chinese Culture??

  • @frenchbullfrog

    I don't know...

    not real interested in China...

  • Thank you anyway

may be going to shanghai in couple of months

  • Am I correct in understanding that a White day gift is supposed to be 10X the value of the Valentine's day gift? If so, a popular guy could live to regret all those gestures from aquaintences.

  • @nokomarie1963

    no, not 10X

  • Good thing.

  • that's crazy! x'D

  • It's all fun and free chocolate until the girls give you hand made chocolate.

Then it's a different ball game.

  • No romantic intentions necessary? Girls give guys choclate?

    My kind of country =]

  • still waiting for a vid on nightclubs in japan :P

  • Great video!

but i hate valentines day but ur video is interesting to watch

  • Nice one ^^ 5/5

  • Obligation chocolate would be a fairly accurate term for Valentine candy here in the U.S. too if you think about it. You could say I'm obligated to buy chocolates if I don't want my wife to be upset with me. LOL

The Japanese version is not any stranger than buying flowers for your secretary on the made up holiday "Secretaries Day". Especially since we usually consider giving flowers a romantic gesture.

  • @FenderGibsonWashburn

    Fair call !

  • Very like Secretaries Day but more pervasive it seems! Nurses week doesn't earn flower's but a buffet lunch.

  • secretaries day ?

    for real??

  • Yeah, big time. My dad's seceratary was his good right hand.. Not he but she bought most of the presents for Mom on his behalf for years. She arrainged the insanity about his passports and controlled his front office. He gave that woman jewelry on Secretaries Day. You bet!

  • Its funny how the japanese make some sort of twist to every known celebration(occasion):D...fun

  • I got chocolate just when I woke up, because it's my birthday today ^^

  • The Japanese people celebrates Valentine's Day in Japan? How can this be?

    -R78

  • Girls gives the chocolates to guys? I wish it was like that here in America lol.

  • damn, that i a ton of chocolate being circulated.

I would be broke or there abouts If I had to give out so much.

  • Yup! When my wife (girlfriend at the time) gave me chocolates for Valentine's day for the first time, it was funny because I had gotten her chocolates and she did too! LOL. I explained to her that it is romantic in the US and the guys give girls chocolates. She laughed and thought it was weird! :). So now she gives me chocolate for my birthday which is one week and a day away, and I give her chocolate for Valentine's day. It's a good compromise.

  • @eskercurve

Saved by cultural difference again :-D

  • cool :)

  • While that's very considerate of Japanese girls, that sounds incredibly expensive. Also, "White Day" sounds pricey as well. I don't know if I could do it.

  • but you know, even on valentine's day, some people feel obligated to buy chocolates for their significant other. but yeah, i'm not a fan of the holiday. i say bah humbug! XD

  • yay five star for chocolate and awesome culture

  • Happy Red Day

    next is White Day

  • i would have given you 5 stars for seeing you eating all those chocolates.

but, that it's not gonna happen 'cause you didn't eat any. hahahahahaha!!!!

  • 5 Stars for chocolates! And of course another way Westerners will be confused and think they're "hot stuff."

  • @TheJelloEmperor

    That is so true :-)

  • I have a question, I had a japanese female friend many years ago and she gave me a scarf instead of chocolate. what does that mean?

  • @slayerking88

It means she is being kind :-)

  • Seems like a pretty good deal!

  • @ChrisTehGamer

    Yeah, dudes like it :-)

  • aww thats a cute way to celebrate. so more people feel the loveeee lol

  • wow the Japanese system is so much better : ]

  • @RebelHQ

    yeah, dudes say that :-)

  • Eating a pack of Reeses as i'm watching this video. lol

  • @tripleraven lucky D= hehe

  • At least japanese valetimes day is better than the west.... and is valetimes day is in your face thing there?

  • @PyrimidKingJindai

Not as much as it is in the west.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom good..... i fucking hate it here.... at least japanese arnt in your face thing

  • Interesting. So what other wacky holidays do they have there?

  • Valentines Day is so commercialized that it feel like it doesn't even exist in my world lol

  • Happy Valentines Day~~~and Happy Chinese New Year of Tiger

    of course 5/5*

  • That's a pretty different take on Valentines day - interesting though. 5* :)

  • So Christmas in Japan is sort of like Valentine's Day and Valentine's Day/White Day is sort of like Christmas. Japan is confusing for a Westerner.

  • Interesting video, as always. 5/5

    Oh, my... Pause at 2:08

  • @ExplosiveBoring

Thanks for the 5 dude :-)

  • I was waiting for this.

  • I'm currently making Greg some brownies!

I can't wait until White Day because its the day before my birthday!!!

Man, don't I feel bad for Greg <3

  • this is interesting to know ^_^

  • wooow... so if you Know a lot of people in japan you get bankruped on valentines day? =P And you are obligated to give it, but are you obligated to eat it too? you know... save it for next year.

    Great vid by the way.

  • Kryptonite not work same in Bizarro World!

  • I've heard that there's diferent "levels" of the chocolate, some is just for friend and colleges and some is more elaborated/expensive and is for someone special. Any truth to that?

  • @Ranact

    sort of... yes

  • lol It's such the opposite over there!

  • My Chinese friends don't like too sweet also. I would be insecure if I got no chocolates if I lived in Japan. Do men ever flatter women or tell them they are attractive? I know some very pretty Japanese woman and when I tell them this they say:"Really"?

  • @mellowsky47

    rarely...

    occasionally drunk old sleazy style...

  • Can you make a video with your wife in it because I want to see her. I am interested in what Japanese people look like

  • @LitlePrinzess

There are lots of Japanese people in my videos..

and some interviews with lots of Japanese people coming this week..

  • This seems like a good ploy by the Chocolate company! XD

  • @SagaciousSilence

    indeed!

  • this is really weird lol and when you told your girl friend she was happy about it XD

    5/5

  • @9056666

    Thanks for the 5!

  • you got chocolate player

  • hahaha. I loved the face you made when you said the word "obligate".

  • @shazam15

yes... it is a strange face :-D

  • Nice video as always 5 STARS!

  • @Cebrail1991

    Thanks for the 5!

  • Man, I love your videos and you upload so often! Don't know how you do it but keep up the great work!

  • @dipic7

I just make videos of stuff I think are interesting.. or unique to Japan..

    Thanks for your support!

  • i'd give guys i barely know chocolate just so i can get something in return on white day xD

  • This feels weird, we dont really celebrate this in Sweden, I only thought this happend in tv shows, never seen anything like it wtf ;O

Also graet video keep up the grea work and happy valentines day I guess lol >.>

  • @crackermacker

yeah, lots of "wtf" here :-D

  • Is the chocolate sold in Japan as sweet (sugar-wise) as sold in say, the United States or is it less sweet for the Asian sweet-tooth?

    Thanks for the video!

  • @reymiland

Dont know much about American chocolate.. but these guys don't like anything too sweet..

  • @TheJapanChannel

American chocolate is usually very sweet. Of course dark chocolate is fairly common here too, but if you ever see a dark chocolate candy bar, there's always a milk chocolate counterpart.

  • watch it with captions! its sooo funny it fucks it up

  • @SMGleader

How did you turn captions on?

  • i used that CC button under the thing to turn annotations on or off

  • Seen that too!

  • Hooray for White Day!

  • Aw, means more chocolate for you and without the beatings :P

  • @161someone

    yep!

  • Here in the West coming home with a couple of boxes of chocolate from different women would result in a severe beating from your girlfriend/wife/mistress. But guys like chocolate too!

  • @spacecowboy5000

    I know!!

It feels really weird when my girl is happy about it!!!
