F**kin beautiful man. Great playing and splainin'. Love that old Rogers kit too. This is one of the best drum instructional vids on the interwebs, I hope them kids are listenin.
Very nice. This is pretty much the only instructional video for shuffles on youtube that actually shows the proper way to play a shuffle (which isn't a good thing -- it'd be great if all of the other teachers and players knew how to do this). The gig advice is also completely correct -- a musician with a blues background will never hire a drummer who can't play a real shuffle.
Nice groove. I've found that playing the hi hat on 3rd note of the triplet (let) give a nice lift to the beat. So it is bass on 1 and hi hat on 3. Gadd plays that at times.
Hi G, thanks for watching glad you liked my videos. That ride is a K custom Dry ride 21" I actually just sold that one. It's a nice dry ride great for recording cya P
GROOVE is KING!! Nice laid back shufflin my friend. Cool transitions. Patient. Not a tentative stroke to be heard. Left hand is nice and loose...pretty little drumkit too!
well actually it can be easy if you practice with music :) in fact you can buy so much books including "play along"s... some basic grooves with basic line ups. that helps a LOT!
Oh yes we must mention Freddie Below, Sp Leary, Francis Clay... then Frank Beard , Steve Jordan And the Whipper Chris Layton... an so many more masters
You're a monster baby. 7 seconds into your upload I could tell. Love your closed stroke fills. I've been a drummer for over 30 years and I am *still* perfecting my shuffles. You are also a very empathetic, effective, and patient teacher. My Highest Respect to you, Phil. (And even tho not nice, I covet those drums.)
great video, love the old Rodgers kit! This shuffle and the variations thereof take alot of practice.I love this groove it is one of my favorites to play.
Hey, great stuff thank you for posting this. That swing on the ride variation sounds really cool - might take me a while to learn. Biggest problem I have is that my snare accents and ghosts sound the same - I have to work on that.
Accent exercise -Play full range accent note but instead of letting the stick bounce back up, Make it stop 1 or 2 inches from the drum then just drop your unaccented note then you will see and hear the difference between accented and unaccented notes. I hope this helps. Good luck
Good stuff but he looses it in a few places. Get out the metronome!

Your great...Move to Texas and you got work ;)

Phil, this is not a basic shuffle beat, its pretty advanced.
This is a Texas shuffle, a Chicago shuffle would be more basic and much easier for beginners.

I like your feel mate! Thanks for the video... I want to learn shuffles but it takes a long time to get the feel if you don't play em in a band!

Drummers are judged on their shuffles, most cannot do it well. Flexibility is key in this day and age.

Argh i play open handed (left handed on a right handed kit) and every time i see a normal drummer they look so much more free. ITS NOT FAIR =P

Turn your kit around and start "from scratch."
