You don't have to reinsert, you just have to wait till it boots up then hold off switch, then it will trip into the charging screen and in a few seconds, turn the display off.
ok so this screen means it is charging ok thank you so much,
i found one in a dumpster that was completely empty except this so i jumped in and grabed it and seen if it worked but it had been in the rain so i took it apart and cleaned all the contacts then plugged it in and i got this screen and i was like wtf but thank you again man
bad thing about it is the screen doesnt always work but hay it was a free gps
Logically, if nothing is running at the background or the backlight at the low level, it should charge slightly faster. But don't expect to chare as fast as the dedicated Garmin charger. :), because, ini this mode, the nuvi might use at most 500mA or less. Yeah, it might charging slowly, but, better than nothing :)
IMHO, the latest nuvi firmware wll goes to charging mode after 20 seconds if there is no data/storage request. So before you try this method, just leave the nuvi for 20 or more seconds, first. If no changes, then proceed with this method. :)
See my other nuvi charging video, where I used/flashed the more 'advanced' Taiwan nuvi 765 firmware into the same nuvi 755T device as the proof :)
All Garmin Nuvis will charge from any USB power source. We don't discriminate :). If the Nuvi recognizes the "flavor" of power source as a Garmin power cord it will charge in high power mode. If not it'll default to USB programming mode, which we keep compatible with all power sources (e.g. slower charging).
A non Garmin high power supply will still charge in low power mode. It's not a universal standard.
Thank you very much for your the very valuable information. It is great to have a 'REAL' Garmin engineer participating in this 'little' subject. :)
Yes, I agreed that Garmin Nuvi can charge from any USB charger or PC, but, for certain models with certain firmware, the Nuvi only shows USB storage screen, Sometime, we want to to use the map or routing in 'simulation mode', while charging. This is what this clip for. :) Latest firmware can go to nav mode after 20 seconds.
@bahathir I don't know what 'REAL' means, but I am a real Nuvi engineer :). Albeit I've only been there for 3 months. I don't mind helping shed light, though I am NOT about to give out inside secrets, if someone's found something I think it's fine to talk about. In this case, yes, there is a resistor inside the USB mini/micro standard we read to see what flavor the charger is. If it thinks it's one value it will try to go into mass storage mode. Others values it does other things. Good luck!
:) Yes, I am really grateful for your comments and insight. Yes, I also knew about the "resistors" tricks too. Anyway, some latest firmware will goes to navigation mode after 20 seconds of no usb storage activity, which I showed in my other clip. :)
@electrondaddy Hey, being a Nuvi engineer. could you shed some light on a problem for me. I have a 765T bought new. Once the battery drained the micro usb no longer functioned.I've read various posts of Nuvi users with a similar problem. The micro usb is used for updating maps and AC wall charging which I can no longer do now. Is this a design flaw on Nuvi's? I would think a warning about battery drain should be posted on the packaging but I don't remember seeing any. Thanks for any input.
@SR71BBFLYER It's hard to know for sure what's going on, but it sounds like the unit is busted. The power / charging path sounds like there is a bad part. Call Garmin and they're likely to give you a replacement unit. I can't promise, but I understand that Garmin is supposed to have excellent service that way. When we make a million, or 10's of millions, it's hard for every single one to be perfect. We work very hard to make them all perfect (I know I do), but sometimes they break.
@electrondaddy Hi electrondaddy thanks for the advice. After a call to Garmin (in which they suggested trying a new usb cable to no avail), they gave me a shipping address to return the unit for repair or replacement. It's a good unit. Hopefully I'll have it fully functioning in a couple of weeks.
@JohnLedfordKansas Sure thing, will do. I'll be mailing it off this weekend and will hear back in a couple of weeks. Let you know by mid August or so how it worked out. I like the features on this model and once this one bug is worked out I'm sure it will suit my needs. Thanks for the support.
@JohnLedfordKansas Hi JohnLedfordKansas. Got a 765T replacement unit a couple of weeks ago. It's refurbished but I expected that since the 765T is no longer in production. Spent the past several days testing it and pretty happy with this unit so far. The micro usb funtions fine and the battery lasts much longer than it did in my original unit. All problems were addressed. Thanks for the support.
Sure you can. Remember charging time depends on the current/amp rating. Better to have USB charger more than 5V, 500mA rating. I think I tried with 250mA and 100 mA USB charger, and the it took almost forever to fully charge my Nuvi. :) Remember always set the brighness to minimum and then set it to OFF mode.
Any typical standard mini USB charger will produce nominal 5V DC. But the difference is the current/amperage rating. My genuine Motorola chargers rated at 850 mA and 500 mA. IMHO, you also can also use the generic mini USB, but the current rating will affect the charging time. My 500 mA charger can fully charge the Nuvi in about 3 hours, then the 170 mA charger takes longer time, probably 5-6 hours. If are using low amperage charger, I suggest you to set the Nuvi in OFF mode.
Weird. Are you sure that 5V cannot damage the device??? I have a generic 5.7V, 120mA Travel charger, originaly for motorola phones, that fits perfectly. Will it work too??
mine goes to charge mode then it goes right back to the computer usb pic.

HOW TO CHARGE NUVI WITH PC:
1-Connect Nuvi to USB of computer
2-wait until it goes to PC connection mode
3-Eject the USB device on your computer
4-then the Nuvi will be restarting, when you saw the nuvi model number, you have to slide power button on nuvi
5-It should now go to charge mode

Really useful information! My standard Garmin charger was stolen, I already bought two chargers that had this problem. I'm going to try this now!

IMHO, the best way, to charge nuvi with PC are
1) Click "Savely Remove Hardware'
2) Wait it reboot,
3) Switch it off, and slide to hold position.
Most of the time you need around 4-5 hours to completely charged.
