that KD race wit 8 belles was so bittersweet for me... when i looked it up i loved both belles n big brown, n they got the top 2... i was phyiced but then i seen her go down
.......im so sorry horseys i have a horse so im not just a randomer i understand that each horse has their own personalitly their all champs for racing! can anyone tell me,do they treat race horses bad ? cos the amount of nasty videos ive seen i think they should stop racing cos its not a game for the horses its whoever gallops the fastest will escape the predator in the wild x
@HorseyBecky you are sooooooo lucky i dont have my own horse but i take riding lessons AND study them so i can see thier ways of life and so i can just understand them better.
Eight Belles was a champ, she left 18 colts in the dust, u recon if she had some more time she would have passed Big Brown, what a tragedy that was, but i think she was strainging since the race started and held on till it was done, she was a fighter
Its sad. so many great racers die so young, I guess God just can't stand to leave them on Earth for long, cause he knows how great of horses they are, so he wants them up in heave with him
This all comes down to the greed for the almighty dollar of the owners of the poor horses who can't wait to let them get some growth and strength before trying to get that money
I for one am not against racing. My horse is off the track and he is the best horse I have ever had.He is a Seattle Slew grandson he was raced until he was 3. I wouldn't give him up for anything in this world. He is 17.1 hands tall.I have nothing against horse racing. I just wish the horses could be a little older when they are started so they can have more time o fully develop to be able to handle the stress of such a physically demanding performnce sport.
I love race horses adn I want to race someday but this is just sad.why are you guys so against racing???Not all race horse have something wrong with their legs!two of you who called thebackgroundartiste and wbleyla make a very good point.Horses have to be much older like five maybe six or seven. Two,three and four year olds are still babies and are still growing.I am training a very very special horse for racing someday. She was not bred for racing but she has more heart then all race horses.
I just want to know why people can't wait to race horses untill they are older. It breaks my heart to see so many young horses die because they weren't ready to be pushed so hard.
@wbleyla MONEY ! ! ! Most people breed too many horses, preferring quantity to quality and they don't want to have to pay feed bills, vet, farrier, board (if necessary), for two full years which is why most start training as soon as possible and you wind up with 16 and 18 month old horses running as "two year olds". And if they waited until the horse was actually two or three it would be too old for 'important" races. Every idiot wants a "Derby" horse so they sacrifice it for 2 mins.
For one, those are not the most known race horses well the five. Hello, what about Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Affirmed, Alydar? They are even more famous than Pine Island and Go For Wand.
There are woman jockeys. It is hard to tell the difference when they are out on the track running. Most tuck their hair up in their helmets or cut it short.
Ruffian's front left is obviously toed out with something odd coming from the knee down. Most all of the horse who broke down on the track had a genetic fault that cuased their injury and demise... It isn't the running of horses that is cruel -- it is the running of unsound horses...
This is really sad!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was going to meet Eight Bells, but then she died! I am a total horse lover, and this video was so sad! <3 I own my own racehorses, but I make sure that they don't get hurt like that......
If anyone can get those in charge of "The Sport of Kings" to raise the age limit and stop the inbreeding that makes their legs to susceptible to injury...you have truly made history, and a difference in these horses lives.
I really think there needs to be stricter rules when it comes to horse racing, at least as far as the age of the horse when it starts racing and some regulations to help horses after their careers end
I'd like to add England's little Horatio Nelson onto this list, seeing him break down in the Epsom Derby was one of the saddest things I ever witnessed.
im pretty glad that race rules in norway, sweeden, denmark is really strenght. are we un lucky maby one horse die once in 10th year or longer. is a big diffrence on races in the north contrys, not like usa or england.
Women do weight less, but for races the jockeys are required to weigh within the same limits. Whether it be man or woman they have to meet weight requirements- if they are too small they add weights to the saddle, if they are to big they can't race. It keeps it fair.
I always wondered why most jockey's seem to be small men rather than small women. I would think smallish women would weigh less because lack of testosterone inhibits muscle growth and because women's bones are thinner and weigh less. Anyone know the answer?
@lauraleesmithagain It has nothing to do with that . The reason there are less women jockeys is simple. 99% of the trainers are chauvinists , including the women.
There are a lot of exercise girls but few get the chance to race. Female grooms and hotwalkers are still in the minority and it's unfortunate but if a trainer is willing to hire you it's not always because you're good at your job but because you "pretty up the barn" or because he wants to @#$% you. Sorry but I speak from experience.
A beautiful tribute to four amazing fillies and a champion colt. So glad you included Go For Wand in here. Her tragedy was one of the saddest I've ever seen. I sobbed when I saw the video of the 1990 BC Distaff. She had such heart
wow, rough business i guess. the owners would probably get more use out of the horses if they took better care of to start (i.e waiting until their bones harden with age)
when a horse breaks a leg, you can't just put it in a cast and say "stay off it for a few months"
racehorses are built to run... and move so when they cant move a leg.. its ahrd for them to cope
and even if the cast is fine... if the horse dosent distribute his weight evenly... he will get laminitis, an incredibly painful and potentially deadly.
That's what hapened to Barbaro and others. some owners opt to put the horse down because the chance of recovery from a serious break is grim.
It depends on the type, placement and severity of the fracture, temperament, value, age and general health of the horse and the mentality of the owners...! Of of course secondary conditions, such as laminitis, are factors as is quality of life during the recuperation stage. Many broken legs are successfully treated, but it all depends on if and why the horse is given a second chance!
I wish people would remember to give the poor horses stronger legs! I'm a racing fan (as of somewhat recently) and I just want racing to be safer!! What if a little kid watches a race and a horse is put down on the track!?! That little kid would never look at horses and racing the same way again. And there are so many horses lost to racing. It's terrible. :(
I love that vid!!! The song is awesome, and the horses are some of my faves. I wish I could bring them back, they were great and did not deserve their early deaths.

barbaro passed in 2006 not 2007 and i hate racing every race horse has something wrong with their legs now their saying that big brown has something wrong in his legs!
I tried this once, but it didn't work. Nice job with the vid! There is much more going on than just injuries. Often the ones that don't cut it end up dog food. I urge everyone to adopt an unwanted race horse from the thoroughbred retirement foundation. They also retrain TB's for jumping. They're great! I LOVE mine!!!!!
This is to try to cheer you all up. My friend and I where watching the Derby, she yelled to my mom "Horses are down!" I looked at her like she was crazy and said "She might be Eight Bells but she's only one mare!"
Thank you for remembering Go For Wand. How anyone could forget her, I don't know. But she is often overlooked when talking about great horses that have suffered fatal breakdowns on the track.
Thank you for making this. It's about time the racing industry took a long hard look at itself.
Running horses till they break, breeding horses that break, continuing to breed from horses that have broken, running the legs off them at 2 years old.
When will horses come before money? I know, never. So all those people who object to this kind of video should just stfu and watch it, and think about the number of non-famous horses it happens to, and whether they support the racing industry.
