  • So So Good.

  • And meanwhile, both Phil and Bobby played this with their respective bands and with Furthur. How times have changed.

  • where was this?

  • This song is in a complicated timing... 11/8. That's probably why they stopped playing it lol.

  • I had this poster !!!!!,I think it was the fruit Rick Griffin's magic hands ? Can't tell you how many voyages began with it melting ...

  • Phil Lesh has said the reason the Dead quit playing this song in 1970 was because "it was too hard to play."

    My favorite.

  • regarded as the greatest song of the summer of love by ian mcdonald !

  • @jesusjerkoffisgod FUCK YOU THIS IS AS GAR LICKS GET. . . .

  • great song from a great album that almost bankrupt the dead, which would have been catastrophic. Aoxomoxoa

  • No more time to tell how

this is the season of what

    eight-side whispering hallelujah hatrack

The time of no returning thought jewels polished and gleaming

six proud walkers on the jingle bell rainbow

The time past believing the child has relinquished the reign

five men writing with fingers of gold

now is the test of the boomerang

tossed in the night of redeeming

  • just check 8/23/68 shrine aud before making grand proclaimations

  • This is a great song! My favorite part is the vocal part. Too bad they stopped playing this after 1970. Phil Lesh said "It was too restrictive... and the vocal part, the song part, was dumb."

  • I guess that explains why Phil & Friends played it fairly often as an instrumental. Big fan of The Eleven that P&F did in April '99 with Kimock, Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell.

  • @NeoSquadillah

Do you have a reference for Phil saying the song was dumb? I'd like to look it up.

  • happy birthday bob weir

  • thanks for posting my favorite quintessential and primordial core of this strange phenomena

  • no problem, thanks for listening

  • Totally on the same page with you Rafaelure, it is a HIGH point of the song.

  • phil hurt his voice

  • The lyrics and singing on the Live/Dead version of this are the best part! When Jerry comes in with the "six proud walkers on the jingle bell rainbow" it's one of my favorite moments in Grateful Dead history. He sounds like he's on the verge of tears, it's beautiful.

  • i definitely agree, but for some reason I like the vocals better on this version, less tamed maybe.

this is one of my favorite dead shows

  • Who else sang on this?

  • Always loved the jamming on this song but hate the lyrics and singing.

Anyone know why they stopped performing this after 1969?

  • they didn't

they played it last night :)
