The remix is highlighting backing vocals that were buried in the original vinyl mix. The tune remained off any album until the 70s and it was their parting shot on Capitol Records who failed to promote this gem by Brian and his dad.
Have just realised that this is the version from Hawthorn with Brian singing the first verse and Carl singing the second, subsequently re-released on the WotS compilation.
What have you actually done to remix this track? I can here a bit more reverb here and there, but if its from the Warmth of the Sun CD in what sense is it re-mixed
loved the video and realised why: mike love doesn't appear til 1:54. what an unexpected pleasure to see a performance without all that ... stuff. they could have paid a bit more attention to dennis. but in general the filmographer's instincts were spot on. thanks for posting this great treasure.
this remixed version is superior to the originals, especially the end. One of the finest examples that the BB's created fantastic music after their popular decline in America
@superbracey In the earlier days Mike was the one most against Brian's Pet Sounds/Smile type work, and wanted to stick to the car song formula of their earliest work. Later (in the 70s) the group was sort of split in two camps: Carl and Dennis vs. Mike, Al, and Bruce Johnston, with Brian being the deciding vote (and usually swinging with his brothers).
Yes, for some reason this song and 'Sail on Sailor' really represent the transition of this band into the 70's... too bad Brian had problems and that idiotic Mike Love stayed in the band...
@burstmatress I love the Beatles, too and may not say the Beach Boy's put the Fab Four to shame - their music was so different - but both were certainly the best on either side of the Atlantic.
It Is fabulous. Wonderful job. One thing " You used the audio mix that has Brian singing lead on this song. The lead voice on the hit was Carl. either way, very enjoyable. Thanks for your hard work JHP
@BeachBoysGuy1 Brother, you seem to be very keen on all subjects BBs, but I beg to differ on this one. That is clearly Carl singing (not lip-syncing). It's funny how distinct and yet similar the quality of the Wilson voices are, including Dennis (and even cousin Mike) which is, I think, the very thing that makes them superior in sound to anybody.
@gregormann7 Aloha Greggormann !! thanks, but I think it's Brian singinging the firsdt verse and Carl singing the second verse. Carl crept up on his notes, whereas Brian attacked them ( as did Al)
I could be wrong, but that's what I hear. Thanks John
@BeachBoysGuy1 The point is that we are listening --- and enjoying!! Thank the Lord for Beach Boys MUSIC!! And I really mean it! And thanks for you kind response. It made my day friend.
That's definitely Brian in the first verse. He had a sharper high-end in his voice than Carl. Carl's high-end was softer. It's really noticeable in "Surf's Up" between the demo version and the released one. Brian and Al's voices were very similar in the high notes, though. Sometimes I can't tell those two apart.
@vwdrummer I was willing to concede that it was at least plausible that this might be BW on the verse(s), until I listened to the video listed over at the right sub-titled 'Brian sings lead...' If you listen to that I don't see how you can think this is Brian here. I can only hear Carl on verses, Al on refrain.
If you continue to think otherwise, then I will have to assert my minority status here as proof that I must be right!! LOL!!
It doesn't sound as much like Carl when you compare it to other songs in which he sang in the higher register, so that's what threw me off. However, it does sound more like Carl when comparing it to the video you referenced. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the Wilsons.
This is version 2 of "Breakaway". 1st version is Brian's demo where he sings all. In this version, Brian sings the 1st verses. Carl's lead starts on the 2nd verse section with "When I laid down on my bed . . ."
On version 3, the final released version, Brian gave all lead verses to Carl.
On version 3, Al comes in on "That very same love . . ." before the bridge proper kicks in with his lead. Rotating, cycling voices -- genuis.
america's and possibly the world's finest band,i love brian wilson, ive seen him in glasgow four times now, this mix is fantastic, thank you for the high quality.....
Three minutes of ecstasy which gets better and better even after a million times! Music that makes you feel good to be alive. Thank you so much for posting this very excellent remixed version and for making my evening!
@Danimalist No, that's definitively Carl and Al sharing the lead vocal here... but there is a version with Brian during the whole thing, yeah, I remember hearing it.
Yep, you've got it right. Anyone who doesn't agree should just compare the first verse of this one to the single, on which Carl sings it (until "that very same love..." when Brian kicks in until the chorus, sung by Al).
They do the same on "Time to get alone", Carl starts out then Brian leads into the chorus! Maybe it was because Brians voice was going through it's first change, I don't know. A few years earlier his voice was a lot softer in the higher ranges. Carl's voice back then was probalby to young sounding to take leads. Brian obvously noticed the maturity in Carl's voice for "God only Kknows". On the earlier takes Brian sang lead and he sounded much harsher than Carl.
I was struck by the lyrics at 1.20 to 1.50 or so, from 'When I lay down on my bed/I hear voices in my head.... ', that is quite a startling lyric given that Brain has admitted in recent years that he has suffered auditory hallucinations since 1966.... a totally new slant on the song....
I concur. I think we can point our finger at Brian's inability to make rational decisions at that point in his career, however, if Mike Love was not such a jackass, he could have spent some time with Brian to help harness the full potential of what Sunflower could have been.
despite all of their problems brian and murry were able to get together and work it all out in this song. despite the problems within the band, they were able to get it together and produce this classic, gem of a song. it was 1969, but they were able to re-capture the sound of roughly 1965-the beach boys TODAY!-era.
My guess is that Brian and Murry spent little time together creating this song. The music is all Brain. the lyrics are Brian's autobiography. Sometimes I wonder if Brian added Reggie Dunbar to the writing credits as a peace offering to his dad or a sign of respect from a distance.

I love the Beach Boys' music from their various eras and particularly love the feel of this song.
But i don't know much about the band. Is Mike Love the beardy one who looks as though he's escaped from an asylum?
What was idiotic about Mike Love (a genuine question, not a challenge)?
